“Medina or Mad in there?”
Reviewed 9 August 2014 via mobile

You have to visit this very old part of Hammenat, it is around 12 Kms north of Jasmin Hammenat where we stayed, a cheap taxi only 10 Dinars will get right to the ancient walls, inside you will find beautiful narrow streets, it is great walking around with turns left or right you feel you would never get out, a high walled maze, but not matter which way to turn you will always end up and an entrance. My main reason to go was to see the old streets, take photos and buy a pair of thongs (flip flogs) because mine were splitting. If like me you do your research you will no doubt hear you will get a fair few people try to get you to buy everything they have, some of the best ways I heard to get you in is to ask where you are from after you have said no to going into the store, once they have this info I was asked for advice on a cost of his new air conditioner compared to Australia, so I obliged but once I was finished and began to leave the sales pitch was on!! On this occasion my haggling skills and yes you do need haggling skills came in handy, he started out at 230dinars and I left with all the goods for 40. He was not very happy and when I past his store later in the day criticised me and made silly claims. The trick is to know what you would pay for a knock of copy back at home, know the exchange rate and start 20% less than you would pay as you get closer to your target but get no more movement from the vendor simply walk out! they will rather sell to you than you find the same item and maybe get the price you want to pay somewhere else. It was good fun but after a few hours it does wear you down, the lady vendors actually hold your arm preventing you leaving. Enjoy the experience and the history you are walking around.

“medina”

The Medina wasn't too large, but was very old and we walked through the old alley ways to see how the locals lived. The sellers were a bit pushy but they have to make a living and if you tell them no, they do leave you alone.

“Colourful”

Bright, colourful, busy, loud with hundreds of different things for sale. Great place to haggle for a good deal. Brilliant if you like your designer labels and don't mind them being fake! Every label under the sun available.

“Brilliant - Would definetly go again.”

We loved this area, there is of course the shopkeepers going for the hard sell but none of them are too pushy and will all listen if you say now. I enjoyed the haggling and the really authentic African market feel.
