“Could be a great hotel if only.......”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

Had a great week in this hotel but few niggling problems.
1st morning my pool towel blew off our balcony while we were having breakfast, after not finding it we reported it to reception who refused to replace it and virtually accused us of stealing it! Given a long lecture by the manager about how many towels are stolen so be warned and guard your towel - we had to pay to replace it!! The air conditioning does not work in bedrooms reported it twice. The photographers in the hotel are relentless every day pestering you and won't take no for an answer. Few creepy members of staff as we were two women holidaying on our own.
Having said all that the hotel is clean, good food but not really all inclusive except for drinks all day.
Lovely pools and beach access - lots of beach sellers tho. Quite a long walk into town centre. Didn't do any excursions as just a chill week probably wouldn't return.

Overall I would say very nice hotel, great staff, fantastic pools, lush food and a nice beach.
Let's get the negatives out the way-
1. Nighttime entertainment is terrible ! Every night it's the daytime animation team doing sketches and mimes which don't really amuse the Brits but appeals to Eastern Europeans .
2. No atmosphere in lounge/bar area at night. No music playing and there's a lovely piano bar which is deserted and doors are locked to sit on balcony area.
3. Although you can change cash here, if you need to use your card you have to leave the hotel and walk about 15-20 mins towards the harbour.
4. The beach is only 200 yards away but it should have a beach bar as it's not always possible to catch a barmans eye .
5.not directly the hotels fault but the manager should have staff at each food station to stop foreigners touching the food, sticking fingers into pasta etc to taste it and even tasting the soup off the ladle then placing it back into the soup. The foreign kids are even worse they pick food up, finger it , cough all over it while their parents just let them! The hotel management should police this much better.
6. The management seem to allow Russians & Germans just to push past queues and help themselves to the food.
7, The management says you cannot reserve sunbeds in the morning, this is absolute rubbish most of the sunbeds have gone by 7am. They even allow the hotel staff to reserve beds for you( if u pay them) at about 6.15-6.30am
POSITIVES-
Free wifi in lobby and around the pool
Great reception staff who try to correct any problems on the spot
Massive pools
Great beach with water sports ( not free)
Food is fantastic and fabulous choices
An amazing animation team which work very hard all days with such games as Darts, volleyball , archery, ping pong, French boules etc.
Quite well situated on the beach and only a 15-20 min walk to harbour and shops where you can get cheap bags , football kits etc ( if you want cheaper again go to market, but be prepared to be hassled to within an inch of your life)
Bar staff by the pool are Amazing and cannot do enough for you.
If the hotel could sort out some music at reception area, and maybe by the pool through the day and proper entertainment at night it would get a 5 star rating. Enjoy if u go here and pm me if any questions.

I am 15 weeks pregnant and we decided on a fairly last minute deal to Tunisia. have travelled a lot and unfortunately I wasn't keen on this hotel or what I saw of Tunisia.
The overall area is quite run down and not clean, there is quite a lot of rubbish in the streets etc.

The hotel itself looked ok from the start and our room was excellent 322 BUT the air con had to be tweeted by maintenance practically everyday. Considering it was nearly 40' on some days the air con was definitely needed. I was told more than once, 'it working' or 'give 10 minutes and it ok.' I know they don't use it all year round so they obviously have the ability to turn it up and down outside the room. Thoroughly annoying!! On the last day I mentioned this at reception to be told it was probably just me!

I also was under the impression it was all inclusive (been to loads before with never any problem) This holiday IS NOT ALL INCLUSIVE!!! The breakfast runs from 7-10am which is fine and then it's continental which consists of old bread from morning 2 cereals and 2 fruits (orange and grapefruit) everyday.

The lunch is 12.30-2.30pm and then there is nothing till 6.30pm unless you want pancakes or cake!
The dinner you have to pick a sitting. We chose 6.30pm, but then you can't get anything anywhere after that unless you buy crisps etc from the shop.

Now, I'm not a massive eater but I like to eat small and often as opposed to 3 big meals. This is impossible to do here and considering I am pregnant I definitely would not recommend it.

The pools are very good, the adult pool especially as it's a 25-30m swimming pool. This is very good although there was a few days that kids were cartwheeling into it and it was an accident waiting to happen and the staff said nothing along with the parents.

The shops were not far from hotel 15-20min walk but seeing the horses and carriages under nourished is heartbreaking :(

To sum up, if you don't mind a boiling room, and only like eating 3 big meals a day this is great, if not DO NOT go.

Room Tip: 322 you are facing the sea and the adult pool although might have less A/C

I was surprised at how short the flight is from Gatwick to Tunisia (approx. 2 and a half hours) and at the moment there is no difference in time zones which was also a nice surprise.

The hotel is around 35 minutes from the airport. Check-in was painless, even at 1am! One of our party mentioned being hungry and the receptionist went and found her some food despite the bars and restaurants all being closed.

Our rooms overlooked the pool and you could spot the sea in the distance. The hotel is basically on top of the beach so you can choose where you want to spend your time sunbathing! We preferred staying poolside: one pool is MASSIVE and we saw it being cleaned daily. There is also a rectangular pool which is a decent size as well as a smaller children's pool. The first week of our holiday the hotel was quieter and we managed to get four sun beds and a parasol every morning, but nearer the end of our 11 day trip the hotel was quite a bit busier and we had to get up earlier and earlier to get beds!

The hotel is very clean and the lobby is air conditioned with free WIFI. There are two bars inside - one closes at 6pm and the other at 1am. We spent most of our time in the outdoor bar which is also open until 1am. Yes the drinks are watered down but unlike other all-inclusive hotels the staff are more than happy to keep bringing drinks and will serve you with more than one at a time if you ask nicely. Bottled water is freely available so we requested a few from the bar to keep in our fridge (no tea or coffee facilities).

The animation team work exceptionally hard to keep everyone entertained throughout the day: aerobics, water polo, water volley ball, water basketball, aqua aerobics, dance lessons, archery, boules, step aerobics amongst other activities. There were probably close to 600 guests in the hotel yet the animation team learnt everyone's names! They all work hard and we need to say a big thank you to Fifi, Mario, Maher, Ramzi and Sam for making us laugh so much!

The bar staff also work incredibly hard and Muhammed was exceptional - a real gentleman and was kept very busy by our group who enjoyed the beer and G and T's!

Our room was spacious and clean. There's a TV which has one English Channel that shows many current films all day every day. There is a hair dryer in the bathroom and a free safe in the wardrobe. Our air conditioning was a bit pathetic and we needed to have it looked at twice but both times the management responded swiftly to our requests. Our friends had no problem with their air conditioning though and they needed extra blankets during the night!

We booked the Market Fever trip and the 4x4 through the Thomson rep which were both good value for money. The Market Fever trip is promoted as having a winery tour included which we were excited by but this was a let down - we were deposited in hot room, given a small glass and around 12 bottles of wine to share between about 24 people. 25 minutes later we were essentially thrown out and back on to the coach!

The 4x4 trip was excellent if you are interested in seeing places of culture, e.g. the Roman temple and Berber villages.

Apart from the organised excursions we didn't venture out too much. The first time we explored the resort we took the Disco Tuk Tuk to the Medina - a 5 dinar per person (approx £1.85 one way) 5 minute drive but very exhilarating and certainly an experience! We ate in the Steak house which was very nice and exceptional value for money - two courses and wine for around £20 each, although the owners also gave us a free starter, plenty of bread and ice cream so essentially 4 courses!

The shops in the Medina have higher quality fake designer goods than the shops in the Marina but the shopkeepers are also pushier and start their prices much higher. We ventured out the the Marina anther evening but took a taxi - you have to almost shout at the taxi drivers to turn their meter on because thy will use every trick in the book to avoid doing so! With the meter running the taxi should cost around 3 dinar each way (£1) but without the meter they will charge you much more. Don't listen if they try to tell you the meter is broken or that if doesn't work after 9pm - both excuses our drivers tried!

Food at the hotel was plentiful and although it was similar every day there were so many dishes that you could easily select a different menu for yourself just by rotating g which stations you visited! The Asian restaurant is also worth a visit - they say you need to book 24 hours before but they were able to fit us relatively last minute when we requested it. Gentleman do need to wear trousers at dinner and we saw the staff enforcing this with men wearing shorts do do be aware of that.

The weather was amazing - over thirty degrees every day. All in all we had a great holiday and we would recommend the Marillia if only for the massive pool and exceptional service from the staff. It's sold as a 4 star but if you keep your expectations around the 3 star mark you won't be disappointed.

Myself and my father stayed at this hotel several months ago in separate rooms, now to be fair the terrible rating is due to the hotel room theft that occurred and in order to bring peoples attention to this theft, without that then the hotel would have had an average rating, certainly nothing special, and certainly the worst of the 4 hotels that we have stayed in in Tunisia, but overall it wasn't too bad. Now to the room theft, on the last night of our stay, during our evening meal somebody went into my fathers room, went into the safe and went through my Dads wallet, they stole £300 in cash sterling, several bank cards and loyalty cards including a B&Q pensioners discount card ??!! Showing that the thief probably did not speak English. This was noticed by my father later on in the evening as he was packing to leave the next day (the safe was still locked), we obviously reported this immediately to the reception who did not seem to surprised, they checked CCTV and insisted that the only person who had been into the room that day apart from my father was the cleaner that morning, but refused to let me see the CCTV footage and overall were very cagey about it, which we also knew to be a lie anyway as my Dad knew for a fact that the money was still in his wallet that afternoon. The police were phoned, who literally laughed and refused to take a police report, the Thomson rep was also not overly helpful. The police came up to the room with the reception staff to see the safe, and decided since it was locked then it could not have been broken into, this was before the reception staff opened it with a screwdriver as I pretended not to have the key in order to see how they would open it. It became very obvious that the reception staff were in on this theft by the way they were acting and their short temper towards the situation. My Dad's passport was also in the safe at the time but this was left, which seemed to be done on purpose so that the victim would still be leaving the following morning. I spoke to the manager the following morning and he was equally unhelpful. So if you have not booked this hotel then I would strongly recommend you visit elsewhere, there are nicer, cheaper hotels near by anyway. If you have booked it then make sure you keep your valuables on you at all time, and never in the room, room safe or with reception.
