Lovely hotel great food, entertainment not so good very friendly staff.
If your looking for a relaxing holiday by the pool you can't go wrong.
The weather was very warm in May would not think about going in
July or August it would be unbearably hot.

We went to Mahdia not very much outside the hotel if I go back I
would try a different resort, it was also a 2 hour transfer, will
definitely go to a Riu hotel again.

Went here 12th May to 19th. Fabulous holiday for hubby and I. Hotel is beautiful. Maids cleaned every day. Fresh towels daily too. Food in restaurant good. We ate breakfast and dinner there. Plenty choices there. We lunched in poolsde bar. Didn't feel we had to dress up there!!! Always plenty of sunbeds and parasols if you need them. Beach beautiful. Very clean. French bools were a bit rusty and we couldn't find the jack but we played anyway. Table tennis table there too. Nice shop if you want snacks. Staff very pleasant in bars and restaurants. Always brought water to us particularly on the day it was 44. Roasting. The animation team were great fun and hard working. Shows on every night. Would go back here. Loved it!

Stayed here with friends in the last week of May, arrived very late at night after a 2hr transfer time, travelled through very run down and scary towns men throwing stones at the couch! Appointed room and when got into room it smelt strongly of damp found the beds pillows duvet all wet and smelly, phoned reception and they sent two night porters who were very helpful tho they changed everything.
Reception staff at night put phone down on friends complaint! Very rude man, complained again in the morning and with the help off Cheryl the rep changed rooms-ended up in bungalow rooms which was great, close to beach pool, very comfortable although the maid took it in turns each day to leave us with a waste bin or bath at or toilet roll!! Expected to tip all the time, from pool man barman, restaurant etc.if they provide good service fine but expected all the time! The ala carte Tunisian restaurant not great, food in restaurant mass produced but good, transfer back to airport was eye opening-mahdia is a dump, litter strewn everywhere, run down buildings all around, very war zone impoverished area. Not felt safe to leave hotel, but just wanted a sun chill out week. Staff mostly friendly, would not return to this hotel, and soured return thoughts to Tunisia for ever. Hotel 3star area of mahdia only 1star

Would just like to point out that we have stayed in a large number of RIU hotels, in a lot of different countries, including previous RIU hotels in Tunisia. It's therefore difficult to not compare when reviewing RIU El Mansour, but will try to be completely objective.

We stayed from May 21st to June 4th, just as the season seemed to be gearing up. Unfortunately, it seems that the staff didn't seem to be able to cope with the gear change. But more of this later.

The hotel itself is pretty impressive, the reception area looks very grand, and the garden area well tended and spacious. A large pool area is the focal point outside of the hotel, and this leads to the beach, which is ok - nice to walk along but fairly narrow. The rooms are spacious, but a little tired (we did hear that the hotel is to close at the end of this season for a complete refurb, but nothing official).

Outside the hotel, there are a few shops, a little "Botanical Zoo" and quite a bit of wasteland. A trip into Mahdia itself (around 5 Dinars - £2 - by taxi), is well worth taking. An alternative is taking the 'Noddy Train', although you are expected to walk from one drop off point to the next, but you do have the services of a very knowledgeable (and passionate) guide.

As for the hotel experience itself, it was, for us, very unsatisfactory. There was often nowhere to sit at night, the bar and the hotel reception was often very busy. There was always the outside seating area, although it was a bit chilly so early in the season. Allowing guests to reserve bar seats didn't help and angered a few people. The dining room was often either packed or tables were not cleared. This meant that there were often guests standing waiting (or walking round the restaurant looking) for a table.

The main thing that marred the whole holiday for us though was the expectation of tipping. We have no problem whatsover with tipping. It's part of the hotel way worldwide. What we don't agree with though is tipping to obtain a basic level of service. Tips should be given for a good service, not to "buy" service. This expectation seemed widespread throughout the hotel (with a few exceptions), and reflects badly on the hotel.

All in all, a very unsatisactory stay in a hotel which does nothing to live up to the high standards expected of the RIU chain.

Room Tip: Rooms in the 200's seem quieter

Just returned from a 10 day stay in this hotel what impressed me it was the first Riu hotel where the Manager of the hotel introduced his management team to us in our welcome meeting with our Rep. The under Manager seemed to be there 24/7 and was either checking things or talking to us. Our room was amazing it was like a mini apartment, I would rather our water was placed in the room daily rather than having to request it at reception. The pool area is spacious and there are plenty sunbeds, the toilet area was spotless. The staff were very polite, helpful - our waiter at night had our drinks on the table waiting for us. The only down side in going to Mahdia is the travel from the airport as there was industrial action we flew into Monistair airport which was 1 hour away. Leaving the hotel we had a 1 hour 40 coach ride to Enfidha Airport.

We stayed at this resort from the 12/5/14 until the 19th.The hotel was well looked after and clean and staff were all very helpful and friendly. We stayed all inclusive and the food was of very good quality. The rooms were cleaned daily and we had no problems. Poolside there were always plenty of sun beds and the poolside staff always appeared with mattresses as soon as you stood beside the lounger. The animation team worked very hard providing entertainment both during the day and at night although it was amateur they managed to put on some entertaining shows. During the day they managed to get the balance right between inviting us to join and not being intrusive I have nothing but praise for this hard working team. I cannot comment on the surrounding areas as we were there for a chill out time and we did nothing other than laze by the pool and stroll on the beach.
Overall a fantastic break!

There are plenty of good points about this hotel, spotlessly clean, food of good quality - staff very friendly. We have been to Tunisia a couple of times before but not to Mahdia. The area around the hotel is barren littered with hundreds of used plastic bags - no bars etc.- so you are stuck with the hotel - only six nights a week entertainment which is not in keeping with other Riu hotels which provide 7/7. The team worked very hard and again very friendly. We were provided with a leaflet advising us who and how much we should tip and whilst we are sure this was meant as a useful guide we found it a bit offensive. We tip when we are provided with a good service - the better the service the better the tip. But to expect a tip - as most seem to - was uncomfortable to deal with and this is the main reason we have only rated 3 stars. We had a couple of cloudy days and decided to go to the indoor pool for a swim as it had looked very inviting in the brochure. When we arrived we found that the 'inviting pool' was for the users of the spa only (extra cost) and that the 'indoor pool' was at the rear and looked more like a muddy puddle - to which it was referred to for the rest of our holiday - we did not use it. Back to the good bits - the beach - amazing and secure. All kinds of traders pass on the sea edge but the 'sellers' do not over pester. We witnessed may bargains bartered for. We made the most of our two weeks there - a trip on the train to Monastir was an education, Would we return to Tunisia - I do not think so.
