Looks magnificent from the outside but I think some sort of renovation was ongoing. Pity because that's what we particularly wanTed to see.

Closed for renovation was a bit disappointed . No one seemed to know about this's the hotel or the reps. Don't know how long for though, scaffolding all around

Monastir was the 3rd and final city to visit in our 3 Cities excursion, El Jem, Kairouan and Monastir, booked through Thomson Holidays in our resort of El Kantaoui. The cost of the tour was 94 Dinars each which is about £38, at the time a Dinar was equivalent to about 40p.

When we arrived in Monastir, our guide took us to the Government store where the prices of all goods are fixed, so the price you see is the price you pay. It is worth noting the prices of the gifts and souvenirs you are considering purchasing and then going out into the City and the shops and stalls where you can haggle. Disappointingly, the Government store was the only stop on the itinerary for Monastir, after a while we left the store and made our own way around the City, through the lanes and streets.

Unfortunately, the Fort is closed for repairs as result of earthquake damage and is due to reopen in July, so fingers crossed it will reopen then. Even though it was closed it was worth a walk around to get a sense of the place and it's actual size. It is also gives an opportunity to view the beautiful beach front as the Fort is situated on the coast. The Fort will be a worthwhile place to visit when it reopens.

As far as our excursion was concerned Monastir was the City with the least tour content, perhaps the Organisers thought there was enough culture and sightseeing in the other 2 Cities and some alternative was required in Monastir like shopping. It is rather a long way to go to visit shops and stalls selling the same stuff as those in resort. The Fort was the highlight.

This ribat is opposite to the mausoleum and on the coastline near the beach and marina. Huge place but sadly it is closed for repairs..still worth seeing this if you are staying in PEK/Sousse/Skanes.
