“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

My husband and I stayed here for two weeks AI in June 2012 in a family room. First time to Tunisia so didn't really know what to expect and with the mixed reviews about the hotel on Tripadvisor prior to us travelling, I was pretty apprehensive about it all but wanted to give it a go. Have booked again for Sept this year! We were very pleasantly surprised. We found the staff at the hotel and outside very friendly and approachable. Other guests had warned us about the constant hassle from traders outside the hotel and especially in Sousse, have to say we didn't find this to be the case at all. Had some great banter with the people but wouldn't call it hassle by any means. The hotel is in a really good position just a few minutes walk to the marina. Yes the resort is purpose built and touristy but it is pleasant enough and we felt completely safe walking about. The tourist train over to Sousse is an experience not to be missed, it's a bone shaker but great fun and lovely and cool.
We really liked the hotel, the restaurant needs updating but it is clean and pleasant enough. I liked the fact that we were allocated a table for two on the first night and that was our table for the whole of the holiday and could go into the restaurant at any time in the evening for our meal. No set sitting times! Food was very good. Really good choice for veggies and meat lovers. Desserts were beautiful. Couldn't fault the breakfasts either.
The pool bar was great it was lovely to sit there in the evening and have a few drinks before our evening meal. The staff at the pool bar and restaurant were great, couldn't do enough for you.
Never had a problem finding a sun bed, you just had to pick your spot and the pool boys/life guards brought the beds to you.
Very pleased with the room. It was classed as a family room with self catering facilities. These rooms are in separate blocks from the main hotel looking out towards the pool (or at least ours was). Very roomy, small kitchen area, through to bedroom area then through to sitting and eating area and balcony. Didn't get to see the hotel rooms but I would guess that the family rooms have to be bigger.
All in all a great relaxing holiday and based on our experience would definitely recommend the Kanta.

We spent a week at hotel Kanta which had wonderful and helpful staff throughout. The excursions were available at a plenty with a helpful in house trip leader. The hotel is close to the popular marina area and is close to local airports. My only issues were that the private beach was quite a walk away and not very clean. I didn't spend any time on the beach because the conditions weren't brilliant. Also, beyond the marina there wasn't much to do locally and the resort looked a bit tired come October time. But for what we paid for, this was a good choice.

We were here at the end of January on a great half board price and the hotel was very quiet.
Despite this there was an excellent selection of food at meal times and the rooms etc were spotless.
This is a hotel that is starting to become a bit dated but they are not just sitting back and let it decay. There is an ongoing works program maintaining the hotel, the pool etc. I had a problem on arrival with the toilet flush which was sorted within the hour and completely replaced the next day.
The staff are surprisingly friendly and helpful and it seems genuine one of our party has been here a few times and says she recognizes quite a few of the staff so presumably its a good place to work. I felt sorry for many of the staff were greeted frequently by older women who insisted on hugging and kissing them as though they were family! The staff (men) always acted with dignity so that says something about them. Why do people do this?you wouldn't do it back home and it must embaras these men. If you like them give them a tip don't make them uncomfortable.
The food was comendable especially the choice at night plenty of Tunisiann dishes as well as more plain food cooked to your choice, omelets, fish (not full of bones) small steaks and chicken. I still heard some people moaning-why go on holiday and expect pie and chips, (they had chips) .
I almost lived on the salads followed by some of the best desserts I have seen in a buffet dining room the pastry chef must be french trained!
The entertainment was limited but we did not go for this, there is also a very good pool bar and an inside pool. There is a kids pool but I can not think why you would bring kids to North Africa.
This is defiantly more of an adults hotel.
If you get a good price you will find it hard to beat this hotel.

Room Tip: Fourth and fifth floor rooms overlooking the pool also have a slight sea view but the other side get...

We stayed at the Kanta for a week, departing on Christmas day. We had a warm welcome with a refreshing drink...much appreciated. Tracey, guest services, is a fantastic help and can advise you on absolutely anything you need to know.
We loved how quiet the hotel was...perfect for relaxing and no waiting for sun loungers or meals. The majority of guests where retired couples who where staying at the hotel for several months to escape the british winter...definitely preferable to loud, drunken poolside Brits there on a cheap holiday. Thankfully this hotel didn't appear to attract those sorts.
Our room was a pool view on the fourth floor and was lovely and spacious. The welcome fruit basket was a lovely touch and a few times we returned to find our beds made with fresh flowers left on the pillows. The tv had a couple english channels including a movie channel.
The location is perfect. The marina is only a couple minutes walk up the road and is very picturesque. The private beach is a five minute walk and is equipped with toilets, a bar and sun loungers.
The food was fantastic and probably one of the highlights of our stay! I'm vegetarian and my partner only eats fish/ chicken. We didn't have any problems as there was always such a wide selection.
My partner made use of the spa for a few back massages and said it was definitely good value for money...and a fraction of the cost in the UK.
We visited the Irish bar, just outside the hotel gates, a few times. Drinks where well priced and great service. We enjoyed a meal here and it was superb.

We did the two day mini safari tour...our advice, skip it. If we could change anything it would be that. Rather catch the train/ bus to El Jem and Kairouan and explore them independently. I doubt anyone will actually listen to this advice though...I know we wouldn't have...
The lunches where inedible, the hotel and meals where inferior, and you need to pay the extra supplements for the camels and donkeys otherwise you will just sit there waiting for the groups return as there is no alternative activity, the bus is freezing. Once you return from the trip you will realise that all you've really done is paid a lot of money for a 1200km round trip bus ride of Tunisia...yes, the majority of your time is spent on the bus.
Of course this trip was nothing to do with the hotel but I feel it was worth mentioning as a caution.

Would we return to this hotel...definitely and without a doubt. Anyone wanting a relaxing, quality break should not hesitate to book the Kanta.

We stayed here over Christmas and had an enjoyable week. We are generally not package holiday travellers, but every couple years it's nice to do one and have everything included. Our room had a sea view and was very clean generally (except for the mini bar) and was very relaxing. We didn't go in expecting a Northern European four star so we have no complaints with the rating. Hotel decor and some furnishings could do with a refresh, but the hotel is one of the oldest in the area. Food was ok. Breakfast was great and we enjoyed it, but dinner not so much. We are veggies and usually don't have a problem with large buffets but dinners were a little lacking. Christmas dinner (which was table service) we had a choice between salad or an omelet and chips which we felt was a bit poor. On the pro side we found the staff friendly, professional and understated. Front desk was welcoming and helpful and our waiter for the week was great. All the other staff from the cleaners to the gatekeepers were friendly and lovely. We really liked the overall vibe of the place.

Indoor pool isn't great but I can see the outside facilities would be great when you can use them properly - too cold to swim in the unheated outdoor pool in December.

Visited the onsite spa once for a couple treatments. Nice staff their as well. Tried to sell more treatments then I wanted, but was a soft sell :) nothing aggressive.

Hotel is right near the resort area and it's an easy cab ride into sousse (which we got from the cab rank near the noddy train). Cabs were anywhere from 5-7 dinar to the medina.

We would stay again if we happened to be in port el kantaoui.

We travelled with Thomas cook, and stayed at a different hotel. It was tragic. But we were transferred here, and we were SO happy we got transferred here! The hotel staff were lovely and very helpful! The location was superb, 5 minute walk to restaurants and local shops and stalls and also a supermarket. There was also a beautiful marina with boat trips. The hotels food was very limited, if you are a vegetarian like myself, I wouldn't recommend eating in the hotel. There are lots of activities for everyone, and I would recommend this hotel greatly!

Stayed at the Hotel Kanta from the 17th-24th November for a week of relaxation with my partner and the hotel certainly didn't dissapoint. We arrived late Sunday morning and were greeted outside the hotel by Tracy the hotel Guest Liason Manager who assisted us with filling our registration details in whilst a member of the bat team brought us over a refreshing drink with a biscuit, a simple yet very nice touch. We were given a thorough explanation of the facilities and restaurant times etc. by Tracy and then shown to our rooms. The room we had (room 217) was suprisingly spacious and had a flat screen TV. The bad and bathroom facilities were basic by comparison to modern European cities but were more than adequate for the job and bear in mind that this is an African country and as such decor tastes can be somewhat different to ours.

The facilities in the hotel are excellent, there are 2 main pools with a smaller pool adjacent to one of the main pools. There are also 4 tennis courts, a games room, another indoor pool, gymnasium (which you have to pay for to use for an hour but costs next to nothing) and for the ladies there is also a beauty parlour. Towels are provided in the rooms and you can also hire towels for sunloungers for a small deposit which you get back when you finish with them.

The grounds of the hotel are clean and well kept, although there were a number of cats in and around the complex. They are no harm and tend to keep out of the way.

Around the pool there is a snack bar which was open during the day selling snacks, beer and soft drinks.....give the local Celtia beer a go as it is a decent drink!!!

The Restaurant is very spacious and looking at some other travellers photos on here seems to recently have had a makeover. The buffet is spacious and there are plenty of options at morning and dinner. Don't expect to see sausage and bacon but there are plenty of continental options and the Danish pastries are a treat. Evening meals were every bit as good. A couple of points worth noting are that dress code in the evening requires no shorts in the Restaurant and no very short skirts for ladies.

As other people have mentioned on Tripadvisor leaving a tip every now and again will not necessarily mean you get favourable treatment but is nice to recognise the staff as they do work hard and will chat with you and ask how your holiday is going.

The Piano Bar was a lovely area to relax after a meal and most nights there was a pianist playing in here. The Reception area is also a lovely place to relax too and chat with other holidayers. Unfortunaly as it was the quiet season the Newspaper Restaurant was closed and we didn't get to try either the Puca Bar or the evening entertainment.

Port El Kantaoui is an interesting place to visit, because it was quiet the street traders try harder to entice you into their shops and trips on boats, again please respect that they are trying to make a living, a polite 'No thank you' will suffice with them. Before we flew on holiday we had read the stories about scammers and beggars and I encountered my fair share, from a guy approaching yoy suggesting he was a waiter from your hotel (got me most days there and I kept telling a different hotel every day to keep catching him out) to a guy who will briefly talk to you befire trying to throw you a bag of nuts and want paying for them, again a polite no thank you is all that is needed. The beach is on the whole clean, some areas have more seaweed on than normal but we had a fee walks barefoot along with no issues.

Keep an open mind if you are travelling on excursions, tunisia is atill a developing country and outside of the major areas there is still a lot of development going on and a lot of rubbish lying around in streets. We did the Thomas Cook excursion to El Djem, Kairouan and Monastir and apart from not spending a lot of time in the areas due to the travelling we found it interesting for us. There are other excursions available and also in Port El Kantaoui there are day trips on Pirate Galleons and Katamarans. There is also the Aqua Park and the Fairground but the Aqua Park was closed due to the quiet season.

I wanted to end my review by going back to the hotel with 2 things that really stood out for me....

1 - The staff were first class throughout our stay. In particular Tracey the Guest Liason Manager and Zouhaeir from the Restaurant. Tracey is a credit to the hotel having only recently started there, most afternoons we would spend a few minutes having a natter with her about all kinds of subjects and would see her giving ip her time off to help other guests, people like Tracy often go unnoticed and I hope that she will read this and appreciate that she really did make our first holiday in Tunisia an enjoyable one. Zouhaeir in the Restaurant was a joy to talk too and on my Birthday arranged for flowers on our table and arranged a cake and all the Restaurant staff and Chef's sang 'Happy Birthday!!!'

2. You only have to speak to the other guests there to appreciate what a good hotel this is. Everybody we spoke to had returned year after year and came for weeks and sometimes months at a time, there was a lovely Italian man holidaying with his partner from the Isle of Wight who really made us feel like we had been coming there forever. You can tell when so many people come back again and again that you are in a good place and I think the Hotel Kanta has just gained 2 more to that growing list......

All the best
Gary and Sarah :)
