“What more can you want?”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

Stayed here 23 to 30 April, first visit to Tunisia and it won't be the last. The hotel was spotlessly clean, rooms cleaned every day. We had room 445 which had the sun in the morning with a sea view. As it was early in the season and the occupancy was I would guess 30% it seemed as though everyone was put in the best rooms with the sea view. The 4th floor overlooked the gardens and pool and fortunately we were above the level of the palm trees as I suspect anything further down could be rather dark. We were half board with an excellent breakfast (no bacon though), I am happy with a continental breakfast but my husband does like his full English when on holiday. However, there was more than sufficient to make up for the lack of "pig". We had the option of lunch or dinner but chose to eat poolside most days at lunchtime and had dinner in the hotel which was excellent and the crepes for desert were delicious. As a non-red meat eater there was plenty of fish and chicken even to suit my awkward requirements! I think our only gripe would be that the coffee machine was only available for breakfast and it would have been nice to have that facility after dinner. You are allocated a table on the first day and assigned your own waiter which was a nice personal touch.
Overall we had an excellent holiday and couldn't fault a single member of staff. Can't wait to go back again.............now.

Room Tip: 4th floor and sea view.

Have stopped here previously but this was better than before (as I remember it). Staff so helpful and courteous. Food - oh my word, what a selection - how anyone could complain about the food from this hotel means they would never be satisfied with anything - so ignore them! Such a wide range and all good quality. In fact probably the best bit of the holiday that I definitely looked forward to. Went early in season, so plenty of room around the 2 pools (my favourite was for the 'upper' pool though - one for serious sunbathers and swimmers. No amateurs please.

Very quite on a night time, though again this suited me - youngsters would probably be bored brainless though, so be aware.

And also quite a few single travellers (more than I have seen before), with no pressure put on anyone (ie not forced to share a table for the evening meal with a random stranger that other hotels make you do).

Definitely one for the mature traveller.

Oh - the room was a bit on the hot side though.

Room Tip: if you want evening sun, opt for a room above the front of the hotel, rather then a sea view / pool...

Stayed here for the second time 20 - 29 April. Weather a bit mixed but overall ok. Hotel as friendly as last time and waiter/reception staff recognised us. We have met people who come for years back to this hotel. It has a good mix of people and a nice atmosphere. It is very Tunisian in style and not just a big modern shell like the Marhaba Palace just across the road. The facilities of the Wellness Centre attached to the indoor pool are really good value for getting a massage for around £15 is good value and well worth the money. Plenty sun beds and very attentive staff over every department. Ryan our Rep with Thomas Cook could not be more helpful and was great.
Will go back to this Hotel again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool get the sun in the morning and are very quiet at night. We had room 323 and it...

Stayed here from 9th until 16th April. This is a lovely hotel with pleasant and not over friendly staff. We stayed in room 421 which got the sun in the morning which was lovely to wake up to and thankfully no sun on the afternoon as the air con in the room was no very good. The rooms are spacious and clean and today thanks to the maid who always had a smile for you. The hotel has several pools but the outdoor ones were too cold for me so swam in the heated indoor pool. Drinks were not too expensive. We had a large bottle of water each night with our meal that cost 2,600 dinar approximately £1. Restaurant staff were lovely especially our waiter Houili and Hazem who made the best pancakes ever on an evening.

The only issue we had was no reflection on the hotel but the area was just so quiet. Shops close around five and only restaurants open later. There was hardly anyone around on an evening so we tended to stay in the hotel which normally had a pianist most nights. Would recommend this hotel if you are simply wanting to relax but although the area was lovely would not hurry back.

Any questions please free to message and I will try my best to answer.

We went for a 2 week holiday on 26 March 2014.This was our 2nd visit to Port el Kantoui Tunisia...our 1st visit was 15 years ago. 1st time at this hotel and we were really impressed for the money we paid. The hotel is immaculately clean, wonderful sociable cleaners with all staff polite, helpful and sociable. I noted the comment regarding the unsmiling receptionist,. I found her to be really helpful and she waived to me everytime I saw her. The food was very good, albeit a bit repetitive, but hot and lots of different options. We were in room 445 and it was perfect, quiet with a lovely view.
The first week was not good with the hotel packed wth Tunisians who were frankly disgraceful at mealtimes, filling plate after plate of food and wasting most of it, emptying desserts as soon as they entered the restaurant. I agreed with all the comments about these weeks in Marchand would never go again until April wgen their holidays are over.
Tips for you, beach towels are provided..you leave 20 dinars deposit for the 2 towels which you get back at the end of your stay when towels handed in. They can be changed whenever for clean and dry ones.
We were half board, wanted to upgrade to all inclusive but understood that hotel needs to be in summer period before they do this so it is worth asking between May and September.
You are not "allowed" to bring in any food or drink but everyone does, you need to take a back pack to hide the things you can buy from supermarket ner marina...they also sell alcohol here. We would recommend buying spirits on the plane or in duty free in airport when you land as it is expensive and limited in the supermarket.
We took travel kettle with us in our room, again against rules but it was a godsend when weather bit cool..you can get small longlife cartons of milk in supermarket.
I would recommend this hotel, cannot fault it and the position was brilliant.
We were however bored in evening as the marina and the square closed about 9.15 and the hotel eentertainment wasn't good and smoking in the bar and Irish bar put us off spending time in tgere.
Make sure you have change to give a dinar or 2 to the helpful and grateful staff..it goes a long way.
Reception organised a taxi to take us to El Jem..well worth the visit, cost 100 dinar and he .stayed with us all day, entrance in is 10 dinar each. If you visit Sidi Bou Said visit theTunisian house open to the public it is half way up the main street on the right hand side it is so worth 3.5 dinar.

From the 19th to the 30th March hotels in Port el kantaoui (could be other place too) are jammed to the rafters with Tunisian families. We had a dreadful experience with this and want to warn others to avoid that period. I could list a catalogue of errors caused by this but there is no room here. One example is the Muslim ladies go into the swimming pool fully clothed even though the signs up say it is forbidden and the hotel do nothing about it. Also the smoke alarms didn't work as the Tunisians smoked in the corridor and not one alarm sounded - worrying. The hotel cram people into rooms - 7 in the room by us should have had no more than 3! So, don't go in that period. Other than that a lovely resort and the hotel is ok and the staff are brilliant.

Room Tip: go for floor 4

Had a really good break here at the beginning of march. Ten days half board. On arrival you recieve a refreshing drink and biscuit whilst filling out your details. The reception area is large and Arabic style with comfy sofas to relax and chill out. Staff are all very professional throughout the hotel, they are friendly without being over personal. They work their socks off whatever their job. Even the lady at reception who doesn't smile.

Our room was 439 and it was larger than many of the others, good sized balcony with a sea view in the distance. Really liked the tiling in the bathroom. Good hot shower over bath. Soft fluffy towels changed frequently. Loved the bathrobes. Nice to have the toilet sectioned off from the main bathroom, although the air circulation wasn't great! Complimentary fruit in the room on arrival but didn;t attempt it as it looked too old. Mini bar in room didn't use. Rooms have fridges but to put anything in you need to take out everything from the mini bar. Digital safes in room. Loads of storage space. Found the beds too hard but by putting one of the thick blankets from the top cupboard down the bed was fine. The maid was super. She didn't miss a single spot of dirt and she always had a smile on her face. Could not fault.

Breakfasts were really good, plenty to choose from. From omelettes, fried eggs, lovely fresh bread, toast. salad, cheeses, pastries galore, crepes, freshly made donuts.... they were yummy!! Freshly squeezed juice and not freshly squeezed available. Coffee was ok. For the evening meal you have an allocated table for your whole stay which worked out well. The rose wine worked out the best value so we drank this most nights and wasn't bad at all, better than the white. The food was excellent. Spoilt for choice, not repetitive, hot and tasty. The Tunisian section of food was really good, since Ive come home we keep having tagines, Ive been inspired! You also have the same waiter the whole stay and ours worked so hard all the time. The desserts were amazing.... really really good. Come home 2pounds heavier!

Evening entertainment was a piano player each night, and his music was dreary and depressing. The bar was smoky most evenings but if you can cope with the smoke its a nice place to sit. They do better coffees here. There is also a shisha and tea bar if you like that.

They have a library which is also another place to sit if you just want quiet. There are loads of books that people have left behind over the years. They also have few computers here too.

The pool area and gardens are beautifully kept and spotlessly clean. They provide mattresses on the loungers round the pool so you can just lie back and relax. They also have waiter service round the pool. The sanck bar at the poolside is a nice place to sit and relax although their coffees were undrinkable as they'd used evaporated milk. The food here was disappointing, pizzas are poor quality - Tunisian mozarella isn't what we're used to. My husband had the carbonara it had to be sent back it was that bad.

The beach is about a 5-10 minute walk away. There is a route that takes you right to the Kanta's snack bar and private beach area but that involves a long path next to a building site, so we preferred to walk through the apartments then up the beach which was far more scenic. The private beach area was really nice, much nicer than the Marhaba Palace section. Mattresses provided and brought to you with a lounger. The old chap working at the beach snack bar is very sweet, his sandwiches are really good and will really keep you going til tea. His coffees, well you have to see them. The view from here is just beautiful. I could sit and look at the lovely sea all day! Like paradise!!! Camels are available to ride down the beach but remember to barter!

The location of this hotel is perfectly situated for shopping. There are many bargains to be had if you can barter and if not the fixed price shops are good too. The marina was really nice to walk around. Yes it can be a bit of a pain that everyone wants you to look and their shop, look at their menu etc etc. You just have to be resolved of what you want. We didn't find anywhere particularly good to eat in PEK, the food was poor quality, cheap but still not really nice enough to pay for. So we were naughty and bought bread and cheese and olives from the supermarket and sneaked it to our room, far cheaper and far nicer.

We didn't use the spa, the lady showed us round but it didn't look that great. The steam room didn;t look that steamy and we have gym membership at home so didn't want to pay. Prices I thought could have been less... I may have been tempted if the prices were lower. They were about comparable with UK prices.

Well, I cant think of anything else to say, just that we were really able to unwind and relax here, in fact we didn't want to come home. Thomas Cook were using this hotel for their pilots too as it's a great place to relax. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer.
