“Abou alright...but not a 4*!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2012

We have just returned from Abou sofiane and unfortunately I agree with most of the poor reviews on here. However, I had a good time and thankfully had no bad experiences.

I will say if you are used to 4 star accommodation this is definitely not the hotel for you! We ended up at this hotel because it was the cheapest holiday we found! More a 2/3 star!

1) food - not too bad. I always found something to eat. I was very wary of the food and lived mostly on salad and rice. The al a carte restaurant was ok however my boyfriend ended up with an upset stomach the following day. I think if your careful with what you eat then you will be ok.

2) We stayed in room 121 pretty basic but we didnt have any problems that others reported. Had a balcony bath/shower etc, dressing table plenty of storage. When we arrived that put us in a family room because they had no room thankfully they moved us the following day. Our room was cleaned every day in other words they made the bed and emptied the bin and gave us clean towels.

3) staff - friendly think they were more helpful once you tipped them! But we didn't do this until we left and everything we asked for they got us. Also, I was with my boyfriend and the men workers are slighty over-friendly regardless of whether he was there or not!

4) hygiene - the glasses, plates etc were literally thrown in water and reused so not the most hygienic!

5) entertainment - animation team were v.good tried to involve everyone with dancing etc. at first, when we initially arrived we thought it was abit 18-30's with how much energy they have and If you want to chill around the pool with no hassle/noise etc it can be a bit tiresome. But as time goes on you get used to it! They animation team are very friendly and good and put on a show every night but if you are after something a bit lively then you will have to leave the hotel at night because it goes quiet after 'showtime' the animation team do invite people on nights to clubs etc obviously for a entrance fee.

6) general - massive q's for the bar in busy periods could leave you waiting for about 15 mins.

The location was good close to the beach it is quite a bit of a walk to the marina but well worth it. Marina is very pretty but you can get a taxi from right outside for £2.

Cheap as chips! - 200 cigarettes cost about £15/16. You do get quite a few people coming into the hotel trying to sell you various excursions - camel riding etc but they are cheapish and if you tell them no they do leave you alone.

Pool - people tend to leave their towels by the pool and then might not return all day which can be annoying. But the pool guy is quite helpful will get you a bed and mattress.

Also, be careful of your belongings we locked everything in our suitcases because a few thefts were reported during our stay.

I hope this helps!

If you are going to this hotel and expect it to be the same as a 4 star hotel in spain then you are going to get a big shock. The bar is very dreary and drab and very unwelcoming. you cannot help yourself to drinks and all the fizzy drinks and mixers are served from 2 litre bottles stood on the bar, so all the drinks apart from beer are warm as they never have any ice. some bar staff eithe do not understand some english or act as if they don't.one time i asked for martini and lemonade but got pernod instead. one day theyhad no lemonade so we had to have lemon in our shandy.our room was fine apart from a bit of mould on tiles in bathroom but some people has to change 3 or 4 times because the room was dirty. This hotel needs a complete refurbishment. they don't appear to have any general maintenance men when things go wrong and everything is looking the worse for wear. It seems that they cannot cope when the hotel is full. The food was quite varied and hot when put out but do not expect bacon and sausage for breakfast, and take your own cereal, as most of it is chocolate cereal. However, the entertainment team at this hotel are the best I have ever seen. They are very talented and can do almost anything. We had sit coms that were hilariously funny, a spectacular fire show, all done by them. Michael Jackson show and many other things both day and night. If you are a non smoker this may not be the hotel for you, because they allow smoking everywhere except the dining room.If they did some work on this hotel, it could be fabulous, but it needs a good management team to sort it out.

Room Tip: Try to get a sea view, they seem to be ok.

having read bad reviews on here we were very dubious about visiting but we have just returned from our holiday at the abou sofiane and must say that we had an absolutely brilliant holiday!
we arrived at 4.30am and were given welcome drinks and booked into a lovely room (1034) this was a ground floor room but still had private balcony and really nice view.
room was basic but spotlessly clean.the beds were a little hard for me. the towels were changed every day and beds made every day.
food in the restaurant was good quality and plenty of choice.
the staff were fantastic and work EXTREMELY hard, i have to say that the way some people spoke to them was absolutely disgusting!!! the british being the worst! arrogant idiots whistling, poking fingers at them, shouting etc etc it made me ashamed to be british. there was absolutely no need for it at all. nothing was too much trouble for anyone if you just ask nicely they go out of their way to help you.
the animation team are the best ive ever encountered on holiday anywhere, they work endless hours always greeting everyone with a friendly smile. we watched a stunning fire show, a michael jackson tribute, etc etc. disco on until 2am.
entertainment in the main bar was low key with just a keyboard player the main entertainment being in the disco or around the pool area.the bar staff are brilliant, tipping a dinar (approx 40p)now and again means the world to these fantastic guys. they work very hard for dreadful money .drinks are good with plenty of choice. we had to queue a few times but so what? its no hardship. some people were extremely rude shoving to the front of the queue, i think a lot of them think that all inclusive means cramming as much drink down your throat in the shortest time you can! special mention must go to Hamdi our gorgeous waiter who went that extra mile to help .

pool lovely and clean but beware of loose tiles around the poolside. we didnt use the pool ourself as it was less than a minutes stroll to the beach which we prefer.
beach was gorgeous and clean. never had any problem getting beds. plenty opf things to do...jet ski, paragliding, banana boat etc.
we had an early morning flight (2.25 am thurs) and checkout was 1pm wed but even after handing in our keys we were still allowed to use all the all inclusive facilities.our luggage was stored securely with immediate access to it when we needed it.
if i could give anyone advice i would say go with an open mind. remember tunisian 4* is not english 4* and treat people the way you would like to be treated yourself.the tunisians are some of the the most friendly people i have met. my only complaint is that the holiday ended too quickly! my 15 year old daughter cried when we had to leave!we cant wat to go back if anyone has any questions then please feel free to message me .

Well where the hell do i start with this one!
I did not read the reviews on this hotel before we went as i didnt want to worry about the holiday before we had even got there... BIGGEST MISTAKE.

Me and my Fiance returned from a 2 week holiday here yesterday morning.. we now feel as if we need ANOTHER holiday to get over this one!
If it wasn't for the people we met there and the animation team we would of booked a flight home!

It was not even 24 hours before the problems started.
When we entered our room we checked our welcome pack to find it was empty. We did not even have the do not disturb sign to go on our door. When we eventually recieved a do not disturb sign we placed it on the outside of our door only to return with it on the inside and a clean room!

One night the hot water did not work at all. We called reception to get this sorted. It then took a further two calls and an hour of our holiday time for the maintenance man to finally arrive at our room and three attempts to fix it.
Next it was the electricity. The television did not work so this time we went in person to the reception. Instead of wasting move time we asked if the maintenance man could just go up there and do it. We were told that if we did not have a safe then they would not send him up without us there as ''you never know''. We decided to go eat and get this sorted once we were ready. However when we returned to our room it had been fixed!!

The bars are ridiculous. You have to wait a good half hour in a que for drinks just to get watered down alcohol in tiny cups due to the fact that there was only ever one person on the bar. At times we were getting 4-6 glasses of coke at a time to save going up again and again. We figured it was easier to ask for a bottle ... which was apparently not allowed?! Whats the difference in an all inclusive hotel?! They often run out of basic drinks and only did certain drinks at certain bars. Most of the time when you did finally get to the front of the que and asked for your drink you would either get it in a dirty cup or get a completely different drink for what you asked for. For example i asked for the same cocktail on a numerous occassions and got a different one every time! Sex on the beach made with a peppermint liquid??

The hygiene of the rooms was not good at all. When we arrived we had hair on our floor, sink, bath and toilet. The sheets werent changed just made again. The bath towels also weren't changed very often. I know this because we followed printed instructions on the wall and put our dirty towels in the bath. The next morning i picked up a folded towel from the rack with the same mascara marks on it.

On our fifth day we discovered the hotel had an arcade! We went in and soon realised why we did not know about it.. only one machine worked and when my Fiance asked reception for balls for the pool table he was told there wasnt any.

DO NOT leave ANY valuables lying around. GET A SAFE. A couple we met out there had £200 stolen from there room. We then later discovered that a family had £740 and a couple had 500 euros stolen all from the same floor! The hotel basically didn't care. Our friends spoke to two managers and spent 4 hours at the police station reporting it.

Towards the end of our holiday we thought we were finally getting somewhere. We were asked to move into a suite with the couple we met out there. By this time we had become good friends and did not mind as there was a loackable door in between two rooms. We chose to help out the hotel and take the room - as they were over booked and needed two sperate rooms for new arrivals. On the second night however we discovered we had an ants alllll over our bed! Under the pillows, along the walls! We went down to reception to ask to be moved. The man behind the desk was useless. He told us that we could wait for them to clean the room and have the sheets changed. We told them we was not happy with this. We went back a second time and spoke to the manager (who was sitting there the whole time) He finally said give us other rooms- after being told there was none! We checked the rooms out before agreeing. We discovered that we were given rooms with bunk beds and faults everywhere. Our friend went to open the balcony and the handle fell off! In the end we dragged our beds into our friends room ( bare in mind we hardly know them) and a porter came up to change all the sheets.

The only good thing about this hotel was the animation team. They worked very long hours and were more helpful than the reception. One animator even took us into the port to show us where to buy REAL ALCOHOL. Without them I don't know what we would of done. There shows were very good. The best was the fire show. Although the shows did start late. 9:30- 10 which left people hanging around being bored, TRYING to connect to wifi or queing for a drink.

Finally i will tell you about our rep Christina. Well actually I don't know if she even was a rep as we saw her at the welcome meeting and then never again! We wasted time waiting around for her to book excursions and she never turned up. It was only when we spoke to another rep from a different travel agents that we found out she had gone and we were getting another called Fethi. To be fair he was quite helpful.

We thought we just had bad luck with this holiday until coming on here (most nights in the reception) to read others simular experiences.

If you have already booked to go beware, prepare yourself for the worst or if you have the time try to change your hotel.

Well here goes, my husband and myself have been staying at this hotel for 11 years now, often
twice a year, may and september, and it's sad to say that most if not all the bad reviews are correct. We also have just got back from 10 days stay at the abou sofiane, how the hell can a hotel change so much in just 4 months, we stayed in may this year for 10 days, and had a really great time, not very busy, but that is a good thing in my mind, sitting round the pool with only 30 people, all on first names. the hotel has always been a little rough round the edges, but that was its charm, it was allways clean and tidy, food ok, staff so friendly, and not angling for a tip.well not all of them anyway! We and lots of others have supported this hotel over the years, through the busy times, and the not so busy, the morrocan bombs of 7 years ago, only 20 people in the hotel, the political unrest of the last few years,we still came, and rattled about in this hotel with only a few guests, always writting reviews, to try and get people back to this hotel.
and tunisia in general, and we were treated to a free holiday by the owner, sofiane, and things started to pick up, oh by the way forgot to mention the animation team, they are GREAT,they deserve all the reconition we can give them, they would have no problem getting employment at the very best hotels, even silly billy, the water rat, always being thrown in the pool. Now back to reason i write this review, single handed the new manager, if you can call him that, is the most rude arragant, strutting, incompetant, useless t*** iv'e every met in my entire life.
We will never be setting foot in that place ever again, will miss a lot of good friends we have made over the years, we will see them somewhere else. Beware the Russian's are coming!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Any room but not here.

hiya like most people on the reviews i was dreading going to the hotel...on arrival it was raining and everyone was in the reception area...it took 3 hours to get our room....room was basic and maid service was ok...food good selection at main restaurant and pool bar on a lunch time was good to. drinks in the all inclusive was the best i have had as you could get as many drinks that you wanted without question only problem was the queues at times. the animation team deserves a big mention..they worked hard with long hours and always with a smile on their faces. the shows they did was brill with the main guy absolutely brilliant. the thomas cook rep was a good help when we needed her so big thanks to tina. i have been to tunisia 3 times now and this was the last for a while. the hotel has potential if dealt with accordingly and decorated. the professional photos of the hotel is def a few years old and nothing to the reality of it. carpets ragged and had paint on...we had a few ants in our bathroom on the last day. but room was kept clean by the maid so cant really complain and fresh towels were given every day.
