Hasdrubal Thalassa Hotel & Spa Port El Kantaoui
Ranked #12 of 33 Hotels in Port El Kantaoui

We went to the Hasdrubal for an eight day get-away-from-the-city-trip. Our mission was to find a slow, calm place, with a touch of luxury and the Hasdrubal does indeed provide that. We went for the dinner inclusive as it didn't really cost a lot extra. Food was ok, buffet style with lots of variations. Friendly staff and very low key.

The hotel does not promote the beach at all and instead market itself as a luxury spa. They have a zillion spa treatments on offer, however, we found the beach to be very pleasant. Clean, quiet and comfy sunbeds. Hotel staff provide you with towels and take up orders throughout the day which is a nice touch. To be able to just lie flat on your back and order whatever you feel like and have it delivered right to the beach is just one of those little things that is very easy to get used to.

The hotel is a rather large one and the downside of this is that the service tends to be very uneven. You are always sort of a small person in a very large group of people, no matter how you look at it, be it dinner, breakfast, strolling the garden or lunching in the hotel restaurant. This is very evident at night in the hotel bar where staff will love you if you leave a little tip and ignore you if you don't (we tried both).

The whole stay has lots of little luxury surprise extras (evening maid with her rose petals, bottle of wine and fruit as a welcome gift, the owners cocktail evening etc).

Being a rough traveller used to the off beat way of travelling, this was all in all a very comfortable stay. Low key, quiet, no kids and good value for money.

Tip: The minibar prices are ridiculously high and beat those of the top five star hotels in London. It didn't come as a surprise to us so we brought a liter of vodka beforehand. If you fancy brand name alcohol, be sure to pick up a couple of bottles in the airport before you depart.

got back to england today, had a great holiday!! didnt know what to expect with the hotel because we did book with the royal kenz hotel but had a phone call to say they had no room for us. we were happy to get the hasdrubal as it was situated on the beach. there was a few things we did hate about the hotel.........being waited on all the time and the staff expecting tips, french people(they were everywhere and were very rude), same food most days and breakfast was revolting!! no one spoke very good english and there wasnt any evening entertainment. apart from this everything was great. me and hubby found ourselves at the beach most days and made some friends with the locals who ran the water sports. very nice guys!!! (we will keep in touch)sports was very cheap and enjoyable and the beach was lovely. there are lots of excursions to do. we went on a boat trip for 2 hours and swam in the sea and camel ride through the bush. the marina was lively in the evening and every shop was open. u do get hassled alot but u do get used to it by the end of the stay. u can also drop the prices down on most things. overall this was a very nice holiday and i would definately visit this place again just coz we made some great friends

We only stayed for a week at this hotel and to be honest we couldnt wait to get home..! I have never felt compelled to submit a review but we both feel quite strongly about sharing our experience.

The hotel itself looked very grand from the outside, Very Clean and the gardens were kept beautifully.

The Reception staff kept us waiting in the foyet for a good half an hour despite the fact there was no one else waiting to be seen to whilst they found our room key... Upon arriving in our room we faced a wall not the garden view we were expecting. We managed to upgrade the following day to a sea view for a 144 dinar cost which upon paying our bill at the end of the week was actually 174 dinar.

We stayed half board, The food was less than average. Breakfast was limited and the cooked food was revolting, and I am dubious of its origins. I am in no way a fussy eater but dinner was equally as bad. A poor selection of buffet style food which did not equate to 4* quality. When we went to the a la carte restaurant we were ushered out as we were half board? The service was lack lustre and very abrupt, with nothing making us feel like welcome, paying guests. We ended up eating out in the Port every night and actually paid extra to do so.

I am under the impression that hotel * ratings operate on facilities available? This hotel was again very limited. There were no childrens clubs so day in day out we had children reigning supreme. In coming to a spa resort I hope to relax not listen to this. They need something to occupy them. Whilst the pool was lovely, there was no form of supervision so there was children jumping on you, lilos everywhere and by all accounts no ground rules.
Evening entertainment was tragic, We had a caberet act that couldnt sing and a man balancing pots on his head to music..?!

In general the staff were disinterested and providing a far from professional service. This hotel is definitely not recommended by us.

On a positive note however, the weather was gorgeous and the stomach bug we returned with is finally on its way out!

We stayed here for 2 weeks. Hotel great, location great, rooms great, facilities great, most staff very courteous. There were two things that annoyed me about the stay and would prevent me from agreeing with the hotels' 4 star rating. Firstly the breakfast wasn't good - it was aimed towards the Germans, mainly cold meats and cakes. I suppose you can get over that though.

However, there was one thing I wasn't willing to put up with and that was the rudeness of the reception staff. They had very poor english and couldn't help with day to day questions. They were frankly plain rude when THEY lost our room key. Once you get past them to the management it's fine - but it was inexcusable for the front line staff to be so stroppy! One woman actually walked off in a huff because she couldn't find the key.......I rest my case.

I would give the hotel a rating of a basic 3 star based on the reception staff. If it weren't for them it would deserve it's 4 stars. I would still recommend it to people to stay in as it has many other redeeming features.

We have just returned from a holiday of a lifetime. The hotel is wonderful, very classy, clean and nothing is too much bother for ths staff. Our room overlooked the golf practice course and was just perfect. We stayed half board and the evening dinner was magnificent, always with a range of about main dishes to choose from. The resort itself is self contained and has a good array of restaurants and shops. Everything is so cheap in Tunisia we had difficulty spending our money!! Plenty of ATM's in the resort (one in hotel lobby). Make sure you go on the two day Safari into the Sahara - unbelievable adventure. We loved Tunisia and this hotel so much we are rebooking for next year and would highly recommend it. Only slight downside is that there were only 4 english speaking guests in the hotel for the 2 weeks we were there - mostly German and French, but we never felt left out and indeed were probably treated better because we were English (much more polite to the staff than the other guests).

We originally booked our Holiday in the Imperial Marhaba in September but Airtours offered us this in exchange when they ceased to deal with that hotel back in January. We have been to Tunisia twice before & new what to expect but were most impressed with this alternative.
We prefer peaceful holidays in clean hotels which have good food, service & amenities - somewhere we can read a book, have a quite drink, eat well & then sleep in a comfortable bed - and this hotel fits the bill on all counts.
Most of the people who stay there are either French, Belgian, Swiss or German and (to put it politely) of retirement age. In fact there were only 2 other english speaking couples in the hotel besides us and though in our mid 40's we were 2 of the youngest!
The rooms are spacious & clean and sheets are changed every day. The staff are pleasant & helpful - however some do strugggle with english. The entertainment is low-key (a local group most nights) but the marina is only a 2 minute walk away if you want something more lively. The hotel owner (who I think lives in the hotel!) also invites all guests to a cocktail party once a week on the terrace with free drinks which is a nice touch.
The Thalassa is very impressive if a little expensive.
To break up the holiday we went the 3 day safari trip which was superb & well worth the £100 each we paid.
Allthough this may hotel may not be to everyones taste (as with Tunisia as a whole) it ticks all our boxes & we enjoyed ourselves so much we are now looking to book there again next year!

We just come back from a stay of 15 days and we enjoyed it very much. The staff is very agreeable and very helpful. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. The chamber maid, in the évening, comes to prepare the beds, change the towels etc. Before leaving she put on your pillow sweets and roses petals which is charming.
The gardens are beautiful and well maintened.
The spa is very nice ande the staff is outstanding.
The restaurant is pleasant but the food is average. No enough choice on the buffet and the taste is insipid.
It is the only bad remark we can make on this Hôtel.
The Port el Kantoui golf course is beautiful but a little bit expensive.
