“Agatha Christie Would Be At Home Here”

Firstly, I would like to say that the hotel is geared to the ' Spa Holiday' market and that I was staying here on business. However, this does not get away from the fact that what is described / stated as being a 5 star establishment is far from it. The hotels appearence is best described as opulent. The lobby is large and the decor suits accordingly but they appear to miss the fundementals of making guests comfortable and happy. Its the first time I've seen greek pillars covered in the same carpet as on the floor!
The reception, along with the staff, is sombre and the apperance of the restaraunt, bar and interior is - well - just dull.
Given that the temperature outside was in the 40's during my stay I was looking forward to getting back to my room and cooling off - I would have been better off nailing a seagull to the wall and letting it flap its wings! Everywhere was roasting and when I asked about this I was met with a very puzzled look but offered no solution.
The rooms - although clean, are less of a standard of any Premier Inn or business hotel in the UK (and thats saying something!). The food is OK but nothing special and rather pricey. Unless you are for the Spa Holiday thing (which I didnt try) I would look elsewhere,
In short, I will not be staying there again.

We (myself and my wife) have stayed in Hasdrubal hotel from 30 august till 12 September 2008. We liked this hotel. Very convenient location (close by marina), very clean hotel and room, fine garden, friendly stuff. Good food although my wife considers that breakfasts were poor. We had nine-day Mandara programs in Thalassa center. Only pleasant sensations remaind.
Live music was every evening - two guys with guitar and keyboard instruments or ethnic tunisian group - proper performance.
I played tennis during 5 days with very good coach from Sousse and golf 1 day - rather unpleasant ( slippery) man.
There were two local disadvantages because from Ramadan - too late dinner and early closing of Thalassa center.

I stayed in the Hotel Hasdrubal in Port El Kantoui for the last week in February 2008.

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and were greeted by very friendly staff that could not do enough for you to welcome you to their hotel. We shown to our rooms where there awaited for us a lovely fruit basket a bottle of wine as a welcome.

The following morning we enjoyed a great breakfast from a marvellous buffet which featured everything from breads, pastries, cereals, fruits, meats and cheeses. Omelettes and other such egg dishes were prepared to order by the chefs.

The lunch menu in the hotel was also marvellous.

We were staying half board and can not speak highly enough of the quality of the food offered in the dining room in the evening. The variety of foods on offer each night was fantastic.

The spa section of the hotel was out of this world and is a definite must for anyone to see.

The pool area of the hotel was also very good with a very big outdoor pool and an indoor heated pool.

Overall the staff members are very friendly and very accommodating. There is a wonderfully laid back relaxed atmosphere in the hotel as a whole and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Myself, husband and 21 month old girl had a great holiday in the Hasdrubal. If we went on our own it would have been fantastic, but the layout of the hotel is not child friendly - steps and stairs everywhere and with a buggy was something we had to get used to very quickley.

Accommodation was very good - ground floor patio out to garden beside the golf practice area and b&b basis. The food was devine - particularly the bar-b-q for lunch. As with other reviewers, we were the only english speaking - didn't bother us - the baby attracted great interest from the older residents and even came to say goodbye on our last day. The staff were very friendly - the Tunisians love children as they are very family orientated - communication was broken english with lots of "actions". We were very well looked after and it always helps to be generous with your tipping (generaous to them is not a fortune to us) - a lot of people forget North African resorts rely on their tips to make up their wages

The front desk staff just don't speak English and this may be mistaken for rudeness - porbably more frustration!! In June there was two girls on work experience from Hotel Management College from heir respective countries - Germany & France - they were very pleasant.

Half way through the week Husband discovered the free "Internet Room", to his delight, with a small gift /tuck shop to one side (Cigi supply) and he always seemed to be supplied with coffee.

All in all - give it a try. We're booking again for April 2008 - steps and all with a 2 year old!!!

We went to the Hasdrubal for an eight day get-away-from-the-city-trip. Our mission was to find a slow, calm place, with a touch of luxury and the Hasdrubal does indeed provide that. We went for the dinner inclusive as it didn't really cost a lot extra. Food was ok, buffet style with lots of variations. Friendly staff and very low key.

The hotel does not promote the beach at all and instead market itself as a luxury spa. They have a zillion spa treatments on offer, however, we found the beach to be very pleasant. Clean, quiet and comfy sunbeds. Hotel staff provide you with towels and take up orders throughout the day which is a nice touch. To be able to just lie flat on your back and order whatever you feel like and have it delivered right to the beach is just one of those little things that is very easy to get used to.

The hotel is a rather large one and the downside of this is that the service tends to be very uneven. You are always sort of a small person in a very large group of people, no matter how you look at it, be it dinner, breakfast, strolling the garden or lunching in the hotel restaurant. This is very evident at night in the hotel bar where staff will love you if you leave a little tip and ignore you if you don't (we tried both).

The whole stay has lots of little luxury surprise extras (evening maid with her rose petals, bottle of wine and fruit as a welcome gift, the owners cocktail evening etc).

Being a rough traveller used to the off beat way of travelling, this was all in all a very comfortable stay. Low key, quiet, no kids and good value for money.

Tip: The minibar prices are ridiculously high and beat those of the top five star hotels in London. It didn't come as a surprise to us so we brought a liter of vodka beforehand. If you fancy brand name alcohol, be sure to pick up a couple of bottles in the airport before you depart.

got back to england today, had a great holiday!! didnt know what to expect with the hotel because we did book with the royal kenz hotel but had a phone call to say they had no room for us. we were happy to get the hasdrubal as it was situated on the beach. there was a few things we did hate about the hotel.........being waited on all the time and the staff expecting tips, french people(they were everywhere and were very rude), same food most days and breakfast was revolting!! no one spoke very good english and there wasnt any evening entertainment. apart from this everything was great. me and hubby found ourselves at the beach most days and made some friends with the locals who ran the water sports. very nice guys!!! (we will keep in touch)sports was very cheap and enjoyable and the beach was lovely. there are lots of excursions to do. we went on a boat trip for 2 hours and swam in the sea and camel ride through the bush. the marina was lively in the evening and every shop was open. u do get hassled alot but u do get used to it by the end of the stay. u can also drop the prices down on most things. overall this was a very nice holiday and i would definately visit this place again just coz we made some great friends

We only stayed for a week at this hotel and to be honest we couldnt wait to get home..! I have never felt compelled to submit a review but we both feel quite strongly about sharing our experience.

The hotel itself looked very grand from the outside, Very Clean and the gardens were kept beautifully.

The Reception staff kept us waiting in the foyet for a good half an hour despite the fact there was no one else waiting to be seen to whilst they found our room key... Upon arriving in our room we faced a wall not the garden view we were expecting. We managed to upgrade the following day to a sea view for a 144 dinar cost which upon paying our bill at the end of the week was actually 174 dinar.

We stayed half board, The food was less than average. Breakfast was limited and the cooked food was revolting, and I am dubious of its origins. I am in no way a fussy eater but dinner was equally as bad. A poor selection of buffet style food which did not equate to 4* quality. When we went to the a la carte restaurant we were ushered out as we were half board? The service was lack lustre and very abrupt, with nothing making us feel like welcome, paying guests. We ended up eating out in the Port every night and actually paid extra to do so.

I am under the impression that hotel * ratings operate on facilities available? This hotel was again very limited. There were no childrens clubs so day in day out we had children reigning supreme. In coming to a spa resort I hope to relax not listen to this. They need something to occupy them. Whilst the pool was lovely, there was no form of supervision so there was children jumping on you, lilos everywhere and by all accounts no ground rules.
Evening entertainment was tragic, We had a caberet act that couldnt sing and a man balancing pots on his head to music..?!

In general the staff were disinterested and providing a far from professional service. This hotel is definitely not recommended by us.

On a positive note however, the weather was gorgeous and the stomach bug we returned with is finally on its way out!

  • Liked — The Gardens were very well kept and the pool waiter was very efficient
  • Disliked — The food was downright dreadful
