Golf Residence Hotel
Reviewed 21 June 2014

Returned from this hotel yesterday having stayed 1 week half board. My 1st impressions were not good if I am honest. I had pre requested a quiet room with pool view and that is what we received. It was Room 258 on the top floor. The room was a good size and had 2 beds pushed together and a single. The balcony was also a good size and had the sun late afternoon. It was however very dated and definitely needed refurbishment. The bathroom was the worst I have seen, the sink was cracked, the bath was quite high and difficult to get in, the shower head would not stay on the bracket so had to have hand held showers, the toilet was so close to the cracked wall tiles you had to sit sideways on it and the paint was peeling off everywhere. During the stay we had a leak coming through the ceiling, I got maintenance to come and look and he removed the ceiling tile and emptied a bucket that had been placed there previously and put the bucket back!, nothing done about the hole that the water had come through.
I found the food in the hotel to be of poor standard, breakfast in particular although I suppose they cater for many nationalities I did not want cauliflower or courgettes for breakfast! If you like eggs you would be fine. I lived of toast for the week!. I will however give praise to the waiting staff who worked very hard to provide a satisfactory service.
The pool area was very nice and I particularly liked the spacious feel around the pool areas. We were able to get sunbeds with shade and were not sitting on top of other people like you can get in some hotels. The grounds were clean and tidy and the pool very inviting.
The weather was very disappointing for us as it rained 5/7days unusual for mid June.
The pool bar served pizza and salads, omelettes ect with were satisfactory.
We used the hotels beach one day of the holiday and made use of the horse and cart provided by the hotel, (don't forget to tip) use at your own caution, we had a near death experience with a coach traveling at speed and a horse driver not paying attention!. The beach was a small area which felt a bit cramped but had all the water sports facilities available at a price!.
Overall I personally did not like Tunisia and the Golf Residence was a little disappointing due to the run down feel of the bedrooms, however the sheets were clean and I slept well so the 3 stars rating is about right.(definitely not 4 as advertised at the hotel).
One last note - Air Conditioning very poor more like air circulation if you are lucky, I wouldn't have known it was on other than the noise it was making.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room over looking the pool

Recently returned from a 2 week holiday. As a returning guest I knew what to expect........ value for money.
Hotel is dated in parts but spotlessly clean, staff are hardworking and friendly, I even had a smile off the receptionist this visit!
Plenty of sunbeds both on the beach and at the pool.
Plenty of choice of food both at breakfast and dinner.
A well located hotel that gives value for money, don't be afraid of the negative reviews.

recently returned from a weeks stay half board. Whilst the furnishings/decor could do with an update, the rooms were absolutely spotlessly clean, the staff very helpful and friendly and the pool area great. The real bonus was the food which was excellent in quality and variety.Would recomend to anyone.

i was worried what we would get for this cheap and cheerful holiday after looking at some of the reviews. You cannot fault the staff, they where very nice, the food was very good, and although the hotel is a bit tired everyone worked hard to keep it clean and tidy.Mixed age groups,we found it very quite, nothing much going on for resort entertainment, but this might have been because it was early in the season(11th may)would recommend for peace, quiet, sunshine and relaxation.

Room Tip: we chose poolside because of reviews, although it was early season it was quiet club side too.

Have just returned from a week in this hotel (May30 to June 6th). Upon arrival shattered at 3.30am the receptionist didnt speak english and gave us all cards to fill out before he would even give out the room keys. (these could easily have been filled out on the bus enroute had the rep been given them). We never slept all night as our room was overlooking the bins (151) the glass bank and the noise was horrendous all night. When we opened the blacony door we could smell very heavy diesel fumes which came into our room and was quite sickening.
Next day we changed rooms and although they were still a bit dilapidated they had a better view and were less noisy. They looked like they had been patched up but needed serious refurbishment.
The towels were taken away each morning while we were at breakfast and not returned til later that evening. We asked why but could get no answer for this and it meant you had no towel even to dry your hands during the day.
The food iwas very poor. There were omelettes but the person making them didnt seem to know much about cooking and was indifferent to the way they were turned out (mostly they were not flipped over so the inside was raw), the pancakes were put on a griddle not hot enough and took about 5 mins to cook each one with the result they were like rubber.
There was never any variety of ruit, just melon some days and peaches the other days. Also there were no cold meats.
The soup was very nice most days as was the bread but the variety of hot foods was deplorable.
The public areas, pool, outside snack bar, etc were very nice and well kept . The horse and carriage were very convenient for going to the beach, but the beach itself was very dirty and ill kept. There was a nice snack bar here but the variety of food wasnt the best.
The hotel is in a good location and within walking distance of the port which is well worth a visit.
I would hesitate to return to this hotel unless I got a great deal as you get what you pay for and I would definitely not rate this at any where near luxury class.
The indoor pool is never heated so the water is freezing as is the whole room, so this makes it unusable.

Room Tip: The only rooms to get in this hotel are the ones overlooking the pool. 1st or 2nd floor. The other...

My boyfriend and I stayed in The Golf Residence Hotel from May 24th-May 31st and its probably one of the best hotels either of us have stayed in.

The hotel is probably only around 20-30 minutes bus ride away from Enfidha airport which was great as we had a night time flight and was shattered by the time we got to the hotel. Be aware at the airport (especially on arrival) that people do try and grab your luggage to take out to the bus for you and then ask for money for carrying it, if you keep a firm grip on your luggage and say "no" they do leave you alone though.

When we first arrived we was given a room directly above the nightclub however the next morning we asked on reception if it was possible to move to a quieter room and they was fine with that and gave us a room (105) to move to straight away. The rooms are slightly dated but clean and the beds were comfy. Towels changed on a daily basis and I believe the bed linen was changed once a week. We tipped our maid 2 dinar's a day and our room was always lovely and clean. At the end of our holiday we paid 60 dinars to keep the room all day as we had a night time flight home.

You can also pay at reception to get a safety deposit box where we kept our money and passports. Your also able to change your money into dinar's at reception, we exchanged roughly £30 into dinars each morning and this was plenty for the two of us to use.

The meals at the hotel were fantastic, always something for everyone. At breakfast I mainly had either fried or scrambled eggs on toast or pancakes however there were also doughnuts, fruit and cereals. The evening meals were also delicious, these varied on a daily basis but there was a variety of fish and other meats, potatoes, vegetables, salads, couscous, soups and pasta. The puddings were also delicious, very sweet and decorated beautifully. In the evening our waiter always saved our table for us, again we tipped him 2 dinars a day and on our last evening we tipped him 5 dinars. We stayed by the pool the majority of the time and ordered food from the bar which was also lovely you can order a variety of pizzas, sandwiches, paninis and burgers. My favourite pizza was the Golf Pizza which had different kinds of seafood as a topping but my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed the burgers. If you decide to spend time at the private beach as we did they also have a bar where you can order food and drink however the menu at the beach does not have as much choice as the menu by the pool.

The pool is great, plenty of sun loungers, we would normally go down to the pool around 10.30am and was always able to find sun loungers as well as umbrellas to sit under for some shade. You can get a mattress for the sun lounger for 1 dinar each. The animation team would always try and make sure you had something to do by the pool too such as darts, dancing, bowls and water volleyball. The waiters from the bar will also bring your drinks out to your sun loungers for you, again we tipped our waiter 2 dinars when we ordered our last drinks for the day.

When we spent the day at the beach we used the horse and carriage to travel there, this runs every 30 minutes from the hotel and gave the driver 3 dinars each way. It took around 5-10 minutes on the horse and carriage to get there however it is probably only a 20 minute walk at the most. The beach is small but clean and had plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas to choose from. The staff at the beach bar are very friendly and easy to chat with and the toilets at the beach are also clean.

There is a supermarket just outside the hotel on the left where you can buy most things however we only used it to buy water so can't really comment on much else. If you go downstairs in the hotel there is also a small shop where you can buy a variety of souvenirs and cigarettes etc. The shop owner was friendly and did his best to help you find what you were looking for. The prices in the shop were also very cheap.

Its about a 15 minute walk from hotel to the marina however every shopkeeper/restaurant/cafe owner will try and get your attention. A firm "no thank you" and carrying on walking and they leave you alone.

The only trip we went on was the trip to El Djem, Kairouan and Monastir. The amphitheatre in El Djem is absolutely amazing (also where Gladiator was filmed) and the Great Mosque in Kairouan is beautiful. The tour guide was very helpful and the trip its self is very long but well worth doing. It cost £39 each but you get your lunch time meal included.

All the staff at the hotel are polite, cheerful and friendly. The animation team are brilliant and do their best, definitely worth seeing the Michael Jackson, cabaret and comedy nights that they do. We also had a massage while we were there which was brilliant and so relaxing, the spa area is located downstairs near the little shop. I also had a henna tattoo on my leg, the man who does the henna tattoo's is brilliant, you have to go down and ask at the shop about the henna though as man who does them also works doing henna in 3 other hotels and they have to phone him to come in.

All in all our holiday was fantastic, we met some great people both staff and guests. Hopefully we will be going back next year!

Room Tip: If you don't like your room or find it too noisy then just go down to reception and ask politely...

My friend and I have just returned from a weeks stay at the Golf Residence. After booking the holiday and having a browse on trip advisor, I was initially quite worried about what we had booked, but from the moment we walked into the hotel we were pleasantly surprised! The staff are so friendly and they cannot do enough for you, the hotel is a little tired but very clean; we loved our room (193) it was spacious with three beds, ample storage room, fridge, lots of plugs, and a nice bathroom. The maids cleaned every day and always left it spotless. The pool area is very nice, always plenty of loungers both in the shade and in the sun, the pool was really clean and a great size too. On our first day we had a two hour spa package which was amazing and I would highly recommend. Again, the spa staff were very so friendly and genuinely wanted to make it a nice experience for you. The food was okay; plenty of variation and loads of different dishes and salads to choose from, but we did feel that it was quite often dried out and overcooked, however that's the problem with catering for so many people in a buffet style. Breakfast was brilliant; lots of hot stuff to choose from with an "egg chef" for omelettes and fried eggs and pancakes freshly made too which were delicious!

I must say that Ryan, the Thomas Cook rep was absolutely brilliant. He was very informative at the welcome meeting and was very knowledgeable about the local area and all the different excursions (I would highly recommend the medina ramble and the trip to El Djem). Any problems that we had he sorted out straight away. We always felt that nothing was too much of a problem for him to sort out and he was always there to fulfil our needs. Definitely very satisfied with the in resort rep service.

Overall, our holiday was absolutely brilliant, exceeding all our expectations and I would return tomorrow!
