“Excellent Hotel, food, service - ideal for a 'do nothing holiday' Fantastic Place”
Reviewed 13 September 2009

My husband and I have just returned yesterday from our first trip to Turkey. We chose the Grand Kaptan after reading other reviews.

The hotel, service, food, staff were all first class but the location leaves a bit to be desired (worth it once you arrive though). It is a full two hour transfer from Antalya to Alanya, sometimes there is a toilet stop but not in our case but beware if you do stop it is one euro to use the loo and they charge twice if you want to take a child in.

On arrival we were met by the rep from First Choice who was fantastic the whole of our stay. He was available at some point each day except Thursday and couldn’t have been more helpful. He is Turkish and Alanya is his hometown so he knew his stuff and his English is superb. The reception staff was also very helpful and they nearly all spoke good English.

On paying for our Safe Key the first day we were asked if we would like to upgrade to All Inclusive as we had gone half board. (Safe Key is included in All Inclusive) We decided to do this as during the course of the morning we had discovered that if you are half board you do not pay for anything as you go along it is all done on a hotel card system with a bill at the end and nothing is priced!! So goodness knows what your bill would be on check out. We upgraded for £15 per head per day and it was well worth it.

The all inclusive is now called Ultra All Inclusive this means now you get one bar - the Lobby Bar is 24hours inclusive and everything is included except water sports, freshly squeezed juices, wrapped ice creams and massages. There are various places to eat, there is a restaurant on the beach, a main one in the hotel for breakfast, lunch and dinner, two A la Carte ones- one Italian and one Fish and also there is a tented area towards the end of the pool where you can get pancakes and juice. There are bars in the lobby, a pool bar, a bar with a lounge and balcony by the pool and a roof bar where they have their entertainment.

Entertainment was appalling (really bad) - four guys just generally amusing themselves but we were told on leaving that this is being dealt with, as it was a big let down to a fabulous hotel. However I must say during our two week stay they did bring in a couple of very good acts.

The position of the hotel is not too good at all, main roads all round. The beach is across a busy road but there is a private underpass to the private beach and under here is the Turkish bath and massage parlour for the hotel. Plenty of sunbeds on the beach and by both swimming pools and availability all day long so no need to rush out in the morning, although we were sat out there by 9.00 am everyday as it was gorgeous, temperatures reached 48c so be warned if you tend to burn.

There is a private free bus service from the hotel into Alanya and this runs regularly throughout the day and evening, which is brilliant.

The food and service in the restaurant is absolutely ace, more choices than you can imagine and our waiters where we sat were the best!! They were called Ahmet and Ahmet and they could not do enough for us.

Could say loads more but don’t know how to stop, best relaxing holiday ever, go All Inclusive and stay on site for your best wind down ever. We would love to go back again and hopefully we will.

If you want to spend a week by the pool and the beach, you would be hard pressed to find a better place to do it than the Grand Kaptan. The all inclusive package that I booked offered great value, but I doubt you could possibly face up to the buffet three times per day, although there are two a la carte restaurants you can use on this package. I was pricipally there to watch the beach volleyball championships, so I did not venture far from the hotel or the volleyball, but if you want to see Turkey you will have to get out of Alanya, because it seems to be a resort city (something that seems unusual to an Australian as we are so sparsely populated.) If a resort style holiday os your thing, this is the hotel for you.

Arrived in time for breakfast, on arrival very clean and modern.Food is okay does not cater for vegiterians. Lots of stews and very few selections of meats for the rest of family. No British sausages only german, Turkish do love the germans.Sun beds are reserved previous day some clients reserved them throughout their stay, this was british not the germans.Had a good seaview and pool view room okau for four people.Annexe was closed, had a look in this building it is a 2 star.If you are half board be aware of what you pay for the reception staff add little bits on to your bill. Paid a bill in lira got change in euros.Restraunt staff tried to give me a half opened bottle of water with my meal and charged me for a full bottle. One female in reception threatened to bar my children from ping pong if they lost the ball again, the table is situated were the ball can be easily lost. Very grumpy staff. It Is a lovely hotel and i am trying not to be to negative. On our departure day we were getting organised with clothes etc.discovered my husbands deniums were not there he never wore them throughout the holiday only when traveling to turkey.Reported this to rep. who said are you sure he wore them and this has never happened before. All i can say is he wore them on arrival and left without them, only decent pair deniums he had henry lloyd.Fitst choice only intrested if you booking their tours.Entertainment worst ever.

We arrived in the early hours of the morning tired and hungry, we were met at the reception with a freindly face who offered to sort out some breakfast for us which was greatly appreicieated. The room was spotlessly clean and very spacious with a great view of both the beach and the pool. The pool was lovely with each pair of sunbeds coming complete with a parasol the only problem we came across was that people put towels on sunbeds and then go out for the day so that when they come back they are sorted, i think the hotel should collect up the towels occasionly so that more guest can make the most of relaxing by the pool. entertainment both by the pool and evening time was extremly poor and i dont know how the entertainment team get away with doing absolutely nothing. But all in all a beautiful hotel in a great location

I have just returned from a two week stay at the Grand Kaptan with my Partner, both in our twenties. All in all a very good hotel with just a few bad points.

ROOMS - We did not arrive at the hotel until around 2:00am as our flight was delayed, bellboy took our bags to the room and we were shown to the restaurant where we could have some soup and bread. The room we were given was overlooking a busy road and was VERY noisy at night - also the bathroom was small and shower was over a very small bath. there are also several cockerels and a peacock outside which will wake you up at 4am if you stay on this side of the hotel.

In the morning we decided to ask at the reception desk if we could change rooms to which we were told that we "had not booked" a pool / sea view although we had requested this with first choice when we booked. We were then told that there are two options when you book either for a sea view or standard room (road view) and that the sea view is an extra £6 per person (not per room) per day, which i believe to be a load of rubbish as we were never given this option when we booked. we came across many other english guests who were having the same problem.

After much arguing they swapped our room free of charge to a pool / sea view on the first floor which was MUCH better! these rooms are disabled rooms so are much bigger and have a large wet room instead of shower over bath.

There is a mini bar in the room which is free to all inclusive guests - always refilled with bottles of water, fanta, coke and beer and sometimes some chocolate bars.

Coffee and tea making facilities.

There is only one plug socket in the room so if you can, buy a double adapter or bring an extension lead!

Air conditioning which worked fine throughout our stay.

TV with 1 english channel, the rest dutch or german, although there are many english programmes on german TV with english subtitles.

FOOD AND DRINK - the food in the restaurants was fantastic i really cannot fault it. always plenty of choice with a huge salad bar and lots of hot dishes - rice, pasta, chips, meat - some dishes were repeated throughout our stay however there was always something new each day - one day they had chicken donner, another they had seafood pasta etc.

The beach restaurant was really good, we ate here most days at lunchtime. this is not a self service restaurant, you order from the menu - they have a good selection from roasted seabass to spaghetti bolognese.
The A la Carte seafood restaurant is also here in the evening - this must be booked in advance but is included in the all inclusive plan. It really is a must - very romantic watching the sunset while eating dinner - the food was of a very high standard that you would expect from a restaurant in the UK - the menu consists of dishes such as Roasted Salmon fillet in white wine sauce and Tuna steak kebabs - yum!

My only complaint here is that sometimes it seems impossible to get served for drinks in the main restaurant and at the beach restaurant at lunchtime. unfortunately you cannot help yourself for drinks so if you do manage to get the waiters attention then order two or three drinks each becuase you may not get a chance to be served again!

Also ice creams are free to all inclusive guests at the bar by the pool - and very nice they are too :)

BEACH - Access is through a tunnel from the pool side. The beach was great, always plenty of sun loungers. The sea is beautiful too. Make use of the Turkish bath in the tunnel that runs from the pool to the beach at the beginning of your holiday to give you a longer lasting tan - the staff here are very friendly.

POOL - Very nice and clean - the tiles around the pool side can be very slippery when wet however so wear flip flops if you are walking around! (I slipped and bruised my leg quite badly)

GUESTS - the hotel caters mainly for the germans and dutch, unfortunately many of them seem to have very bad manners - the women will walk around topless and in thongs right through the restaurant while you are eating, and i even saw one leaning over the bar with her bare breasts pressed on the bar! yuck! and i'm not talking about young women either i'm talking 60's at least!

ENTERTAINMENT - there seemed to be plenty for kids to do throughout the day, the two girls who looked after the kids club were really good with them. there is also a kiddy disco in the evening - the songs will drive you mad but the kids love it!

The evening entertainment was probably the worst i've ever seen, a bunch of 5 year olds could come up with better. However sometimes it's so bad that it's funny. Most of the entertainment was definitely not child friendly and was very violent, always shouting and hitting each other with chairs, foam battons, anything they could find!!! However our rep informed us towards the end of our stay that they were changing the shows as there had been too many complaints about the level of violence. We didn't get a chance to see any shows after that so maybe it's a bit better now!

STAFF - Some were very friendly, others were unbelievably rude. Some would only speak to German guests and completely ignore English guests - others would shout something at you in Turkish if you ask for a drink!!! However there are a few who are really friendly and will chat away to you for ages. Only a few staff are very good at english, some don't speak any at all.

SERVICES - As i said earlier, try out the Turkish Bath at the hotel. Also the Sunset photos. you pay nothing for the shoot but you pay about £5 per photo, although you do not have to buy any if you don't like them. This is really good for couples - the photos are very professional.

The gym was good, i didn't use it but my partner did. there were plenty of machines.

The free bus service... don't bother. it's first come first serve for spaces as it's always full. much easier to jump on a bus on the main road for just 1TL each.

ALANYA - much bigger than i expected with plenty to see. the restaurants are very good - try "La Luna" and "The Marina" these were both excellent - if you like mexican food try the fajitas, the best i've tasted. However don't expect it to be cheap - the prices are much the same as england, a beer in the restaurant will set you back about 6TL, whereas if you go out of the town a bit you will only pay 1TL.
The shops sell much of the same stuff, either souvenirs or a huge array of fake Ed Hardy t shirts or D&G jeans. Don't let them over charge you, the prices vary depending on quality, the very best fake t shirts you can get for around 20TL although they will try and charge you 60.
Don't be afraid to haggle and don't spend to much time looking unless you are planning to buy as they get quite upset with you. make it clear when you walk in that you just want to look and if they get pushy just say no and walk out.

There was an italian circus in Alanya while we were staying which we went to. It was one of the highlights of my holiday i enjoyed it so much, It was a bit sad to see so many beautiful animals in there (lions, tigers (one white tiger), Hippo, zebras, emus, crocodiles, snakes, horses, a monkey and a very cute lion cub), but other than that it was superb and really well put together.

EXCURSIONS - we tried the following....

Aqua Park - Don't do it, its an hour transfer either way and at about 55TL per person (including lunch and transfer) it's really not worth the money. There are about 6 or 7 water slides and a wave pool, it's very small. The floors are made from VERY slippery tiles and we must have seen at least 20 people fall over while we were there. There are no lifeguards by the pool either, we saw one child walking along the top of a 10 foot wall with nobody around to stop him.

Boat Trip - We really enjoyed it, lots of stop offs for swimming and a good chance to sunbathe on the top level. soft drinks and lunch were included, the lunch was really good. You will see some lovely views around the coastline. We paid 85TL for both of us including transfers.

Quad Safari - EXCELLENT worth every penny! Quad biking through the mountains with a stop off at a lake where you can swim and then it's back on the quads to go back. Really good fun and you will get very dirty!!! 65TL for two people and worth it.

TIPS - My advice would be DON'T GO HALF BOARD it will cost you a fortune in drinks alone, you must go all inclusive its worth it.

Go for two weeks instead of one, the transfer from the airport is long so you spend almost a whole day traveling. two weeks will give you enough time to relax and not feel rushed.

Oh and bring a higher factor sun cream with you than you are used to as the sun is so strong, everybody at the hotel was bright red while i was there, even me :)

Watch out for mosquitos make sure you buy a good repellent.

Don't fill your suitcase on the way in because you may end up doing a lot of shopping over there!

OVERVIEW - We would definitely go back, in fact we are already planning our return to Grand Kaptan next year. Its really good value for money and despite a few minor hiccups which were mainly down to the staff, the hotel was really lovely and the food was fantastic. We loved it anyway :)

Hope this helps!
