Dionysia apartments and Villa

Review of Hotel Dionysia
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 May 2013
We have visited Kalkan many times and regularly stay in either the apartments or the villa at the Dionysia. We have recently been back there and, as usual, we could not have asked for more. The staff are welcoming and helpful and the rooms are well decorated and spotlessly clean. Looking forward to our next visit.

On arriving in Kalkan we thought what a lovely place even if the town is built on a very steep hill. The hotel looks great from the outside, but inside you are met by very miserable lot of staff. The room was just about large enough to 'swing a cat', providing it is a small kitten! ( no animals were harmed in the measurement of the cell.....sorry - room)

The balcony was large enough to place two chairs facing each other one arm on the window frame and the other arm on the balcony frame. The view was of an olive tree, we could see nothing at all, and had the sun for 10 mins in the morning and about 5 mins at sunset! We asked if we would be able to change rooms, but the manager who resembled Uncle Fester with his looks and his manner was very rude and said no, Thomsons customers had these rooms! Super quote uncle!

We found out that people who had been there earlier in the year had the best rooms and 'manager fester' was always fussing over them. The breakfast was ok ish, but if you had to speak to any of the staff they were as miserable as sin and could not be bothered to say morning to you in reply to your 'good morning!'

So, in a nutshell, we had a great week, but spoilt by the non view view, small room and balcony and surly staff. As for the bar on the roof, it was so much trouble for the staff to serve we quickly Sussed out why we were the only ones up there, people went to happier bars nearby where staff were great and prices cheaper....you still had the fantastic views. Cant't really see why everyone raves about this place. Reception was rarely managed and people had to raise Mr Happy from the cafe across the road.

Never again, farewell Uncle Fester!

Room tip: Find another hotel!

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Dionysia for two weeks at the end of September 2012.

Before we went we were amazed at the price we paid through hotels4u.com - £20 per night for both of us, including breakfast. Therefore we weren't sure what to expect, but on the whole we were pleasantly surprised.

Our room (105) was extremely clean and functional, although small, in a traditional Turkish style. Unfortunately it was right next to the breakfast room which meant we were woken each morning at 8 by loud voices along with clatters, bangs and singing from the kitchen which was right opposite our door. On the plus side we didn't miss breakfast once!! There are some basic improvements that would have improved the room:

- The shower curtain was too narrow and the bathroom floor got soaked every time we used it
- The bed and pillows were very hard and strangely rather than having a top sheet and blanket there was just a blanket which took a bit of getting used to
- There were no water glasses in the room so we had to drink out of large water bottles - not convenient in the middle of the night
- There was no fridge as they don't allow you to bring your own good and drink into the hotel

BUT bearing in the mind the price, we weren't expecting a lot so the above are just minor quibbles.

The pool area was lovely - a really picturesque setting with a good sized pool which was a nice temperature. However, it has to be said that the loungers were extremely full every day and lots of people saved loungers with their towels which we weren't very impressed about, to the extent that one day we had to go down to the beach as there wasn't enough room. The loungers were also extremely close together so not a lot of personal space.

The hotel was in a fantastic location - a nice, quiet side street but literally minutes from the town. I felt sorry for some of the people further up the hill that had to hike up and down on a daily basis.

A final comment about the hotel is that due to it being for adults only, the clientele were generally couples in their 50s and 60s - we were the only young couple (28 and 29) there during our stay. Not a problem as such, but we were a lot livelier than most and possibly ended up disturbing others by playing bat and ball, etc in the pool - this might be a consideration for anyone looking at the hotel who likes to be a bit more active in the pool.

Kalkan itself was a beautiful town with so many restaurants that you could return year after year and not have to go back to the same place twice. There wasn't an enormous amount by way of night life, but that might be because we were there later in the season.

We hired a car on two days from Brave Tour Cars (£20per day) and drove to all the tourist hotspots in the area - Xanthos, Saklikent Gorge, Tlos, Pataras beach, Kas and Gombe. We would definitely recommend doing this rather than paying for the coach tours, as we were able to go at our own pace and must have paid significantly less over all!

A recommendation whilst in Kalkan is to rent a self-drive motor boat from the Indigo Beach water sports club. This cost us around £55 for a day and was one of our favourite days - just literally cruising around at our own pace, stopping for a swim, etc - really peaceful and beautiful!

Overall, we had a lovely holiday in Kalkan and would recommend it as a lovely place to visit, although might opt for a livelier hotel another time.

Room tip: Try not to be next to the breakfast room

The hotel gives a great first impression, fantastic location, the exterior is kept clean and looks very appealing. However, upon arrival there was no-one to greet us, eventually we were shown to our room. For the price paid we expected budget, the rooms are really small, but very clean, only a single wardrobe and no drawers, therefore one of us had to live out of a suitcase for the week. The shower/toilet was so tiny that we gave up with the shower curtain and had to use it as though it were a wet room. Our room faced onto the road outside which was extremely noisy both at night and in the morning, as we stayed out of season, I cannot imagine the noise level mid season. Breakfast was awful, in fact we chose to go to an alternative restaurant and pay for breakfast. The younger staff were sullen and rude. Will definitely return to Kalkan but not to Hotel Dionysia.

This is basic cheap accommodation. It is very traditionally Turkish, reminds me of places I stayed in 20 years ago! It does however have free wi fi & much needed air con. The beds are hard, as mentioned in other reviews, but I still stuggled to get up in a morning! There wasn't much storage space, so pack light. The real attraction is the location, just a walk to the end of the street & two minutes across the car park,& you are in the town by the taxi rank & dolmus stop. We stayed in the Samira Deluxe last year, which was fabulous , but that hill!! Hence the change of location this year.Overall, this accommodation was fine if you are o.k with cheap & cheerful, but not if you want more frills & comfort.

We had booked a self-catering apartment in central Kalkan through Thompson's only to find that they had mucked up our booking and placed us in the Dionysia by mistake. Arriving late, hot and angry we thought our holiday was already ruined. The next day after complaints to our rep we were approached by Ahmet who offered us an excellent deal on a one bed apartment in the Diana Apartments (owned by the hotel) across the way. We had awoke that morning realising the brilliant position occupied by this hotel - it was only 50yds from our original intended destination and centrally located without being on a busy thoroughfare. When we saw the apartment we were overjoyed. It faced over the bay, was light, airy, well equipped and spacious. What's more we had breakfast at the hotel thrown in and enjoyed the lovely pool which we overlooked from our balcony. Throughout our stay Ahmet and his team were very helpful and hospitable. We felt they couldn't do enough for us - and this at the end of the season when you might expect everyone to be weary. If you want an hotel or apartment in Kalkan look no further.

Room tip: Ask for a room on the bay side of the hotel or, if looking for an apartment choose the first or second floor.
