Reviewed 30 May 2010

We spent two weeks in The Oasis Hotel, Kalkan, Turkey in May 2010, booked as part of a package with Tapestry, a UK travel Co. This is a small hotel with staff that are, approachable, friendly and they were always willing to help their guests and are attentive without being obtrusive. The hotel is within easy walking distance to the town centre. We stayed in room, 303, it was just about adequate, in size, for a two week stay and was cleaned every day. The bath room had a shower cabinet , the shower head was fixed to the wall, which did not entirely suit my wife. The maid, some days, left flower petals on a folded towel arrangement on the double bed which was comfortable but the duvet was too narrow prompting a nightly power struggle of who got the most cover, Guess who won!
The room had a small balcony which had two chairs, There was a part view of the bay, (see pic) but it looked out over the road and a small rough hill, so was not an attractive proposition for relaxation. The balcony was though, O.K. for drying out washing, which was necessary, given that the hotel asks silly prices, e.g. 11 TL for laundering a t shirt. Guests in the hotel, all complained to one another about the price of the laundry service. The hotel has not grasped the fact that, beyond a certain price level; guests will not entertain it. This comment goes for the fridge prices too. Why an earth would a guest pay a room fridge price of 3.00 TL, for a small 200 ml carton of milk when not 50 metres up the road a supermarket sells the same at 0.67TL ! There was a daily room supply of two tea bags and two coffee satchets and a small bottle of water FOC, but no milk! The hotel's swimming pool is small and surrounded by high walls. I only saw one guest swimming it, during our two week stay. There is an upper sun terrace above it, which looks out over some of Kalkan and its bay and a good breakfast terrace on the same level as the pool. The breakfasts are good, plenty of choice, unhurried, self and waiter service provided. The pool was not a major issue for us, as there are two sister hotels within easy walking distance, namely the Asfiya (closest) and the Likya, (superb) they have bigger pools and sun terraces, which during our stay were not oversubscribed.
On entering the Oasis's front doors, the reception is on the left, down a short corridor and a reception guest room is on the right. Its a nicely appointed room. Behind it is the bar, which we never saw being used. Its just too small and unwelcoming. The architect who designed that area could have done better, why did he not open the whole area up and just screen off the bar when not in use? Its the hotels loss. Anyway, who cares, there are well over two hundred bars and restaurants starting just down the road towards Kalkan and in the other direction there are plenty too. There are flat screen wall TV's in the rooms, but the only english language program available was the Asian BBC world service, not exactly holiday entertainment, but useful for an update of ash and UK airport closures. There is wifi, but did I really want to lug a lap top over two thousand miles for the dubious pleasure of reading my e mails? The hotel should have a lappy available for hire for a few hours. Having said that the hotel reception did let me use their desktop once to read my e mails, but that was a faff, dragging the wired keyboard across the counter and the Turkish keyboards are different in lay out and symbols. All good fun.

The only real negatives were,
1. A generator that occasionally started up and ran for a few hours. Its a huge beast kept outside in its own cage at ground level and it once roared away in the early hours. The guests in room 203 just below us and closer to Jenny, thought they were back in Dalaman airport! In room 303 Jenny's sound level is about equal to the room air con unit, but lower in frequency. If you are sensitive to noise, try not to stay on that side of this hotel.
2. There were, some days during our second weeks stay, after breakfast and in the late afternoons, when a noticeable nasty niff in our room, emanated from the bathroom. A stale cabbage and sewery odour, came in via the air extraction vent in the shower cabinet ceiling. Where as most domestic air extraction units work in conjunction with the room lights, this air extraction system only worked at certain times of the day and the smell started after it went off. The hotel staff promised to investigate, but our stay ended before it was fixed or otherwise.
In summary a value for money hotel, with limited facilities and nice staff. Would we stay there again, yes but only for a weeks stay; for two weeks perhaps look for a bigger hotel and more facilities.

We booked to stay here with Tapestry on a last minute basis, been to Kalkan many times and knew the location was good.
Having read the reviews we were expecting the room ( 102 ) to be small and the pool also to be small. What we didn't expect was the fact that the owners obviously were not all that interested in the Oasis and decided not to open the bar at all, directing all guests to the sister hotel Asfiya ( 5 minute walk up the road ). After the first night we asked to be moved to the Asfiya, which was done very smoothly.

I have nothing terrible to say about the Oasis and the staff were extremely pleasant and very helpful, but that aside would struggle to recommend this hotel, as it is a similar price to the Asfiya and not comparable in amenities offered.

Stayed at the Oasis for one week in mid September. Room was spacious and airy with a small balcony. The rooms was decorated very stylishly and have a separate seating area. Be careful of the large terracotta pot when you get up in the middle of the night. My partner knocked it over and smashed it. Waking up half of the hotels residents. (An extra cost of 50 lira addaed to the bill)
The staff are great and very friendly, breakfast is a buffet, ommelettes are available on request. The hotel is sitiuated in a great location for all the restaurants. Our Tapestry rep Vicky was fantastic always cheerful and full of advice. Unlike most companies there is no hard sell on the trips.
The ony minuses are the woefully inadequate pool and pool area. It's so small I never saw anyone around or in it. There is a decked sunbathing area which although very pretty is not really up to much.
There is a bar area just of the reception which was never staffed or used, which seemed a pity as there was nowhere to socialise with other hotel guests after a hard day at the beach.
Kalkan village itself is a little gem. Most of the restaurants are either on the harbourside or on roof terraces in the old town. All with the most marvelous views. For people who like to dine out Kalan is heaven. Too many fine restaurants to count serving very good food.
Miles away from the fish and chips, roast beef and full english breakfasts of the larger resorts like Bodrum or Hisaranou. If you're looking for traditional english, don't go to Kalkan.
For a peaceful realaxing holiday in pleasant surroundings take a trip to Kalkan!

We booked through Tapestry, who were very helpful - and were completely honest about th hotel pluses and minuses. The hotel staff were very helpful if not always accurate in their info, not sure if this was because what we were saying was lost in translation. The room was lovely and clean - but the chaimbermaid did not always mop the bathroom floor which.. We had a suite on the third floor at the side of the building which gave you a sideways sea view from the balcony - bed was comfortable and very kingsize. My main complaints were firstly the breakfast was sometimes cold ie. the scramble eggs, bakebeans, sausages. Also to remember you can get an omlette on request. Secondly the bar area was a waste as it was often unmaned, and there was nothing to encourage guest to use it. Thirdly we were told that the pool was small, but did not realise how small, so if you want to launge around the pool area, this hotel may not be for you. But remember you can use the bar and other facilities at the Asfiya its bigger sister hotel just up the road .But I would not let this put you off, we would still recommend it, and would go back.

We stayed here for nine days having booked with Tapestry Collection whom I believe have the exclusive on this and its sister hotels. Couldn't have been more helpful when booking, talked us through the rooms by number and helped us pick one (they're all mini suites) with a pool and sea view form the balcony. The room's very comfortable, usual facilities plus free wireless everywhere and the staff couldn't be more helpful. The breakfast (included) is good and they will produce lunch and snacks for you on demand. The pool is very small and some days we went to their sister hotel up the road or to their beach club (complimentary taxi to the latter) which was very easy.

No children allowed in high season, which was an attraction.

Small, friendly, attentive service, very tastefully refurbished in 2008. Good breakfast, lovely room, if a bit on the small side. Tiny pool but arrangement to use other facilities at sister hotels free of charge. Our room was 304 (you are able to book by room) and this had a lovely view over Kalkan Bay. The hotel is on a main road but it's not all that busy and we weren't distrubed. We really enjoyed our stay.

We have just returned from a fortnight at the oasis, we stayed in room 402 which is one of the penthouse suites and it was fantastic, the views out over the bay are marvellous. The hotel staff cannot do enough for you and the service is excellent, all i would say is that it needs a little more in the way of sunbathing area. The food was good and plentiful. The hotel is ideally situated with a short walk to kalkan town and harbour. In all a marvellous holiday and highly recommended.
