“Great first visit to Turkey”
Reviewed 18 November 2009

Lizo Pension was recommended to us by my work collegue whoh ad been there before, having never visited Turkey before we thought we would give it a go. We landed in the middle of the night and faced a 2 hour + drive to Kalkan in a small minibus. Arriving at the Lizo at 3.30am we were shown to our room by Ali. First impressions of the room where that it was on the small side but very clean and the double bed was really comfy. Waking up a few hours later I opened the door to the balcony and was greeted by one of the best views I have ever had from a hotel balcony. We went up to the roof terrace for breakfast and were yet again met with an outstanding view, great food and friendly guests and owners. We had a fantastic weeks holiday. The owners were not in your face but helpful if you needed anything as we found out on our last night there. We where leaving the hotel at around 8.30pm and we had decided to join in the Mezi night as our last meal in Turkey which was being served at 8 pm but Ali served me and my husband 15 minutes earlier than the other guests(we did not ask him to do this) as he knew we where leaving soon. I thought this was really thoughtful and this last simple thing made the holiday end on a really good note, and the Mezi was delicious. Hope to visit again next year

I can agree mainly with the reviews on this hotel that say that both Sarah and Ali are only bothered with the people who attend their special food nights and spend their money in the bar at night or eating after staying at the pool during the day, which is a shame, considering their location and wonderful views from the hotel.

On arriving in the evening we struggled with our cases to a tiny room at the rear of the hotel which was overlooked by the BBQ area,we wouldn't have minded but the curtains were far to short for the windows so spent our week of relaxation ducking and diving whilst getting ready!

When we arrived we had a meze meal (rooftop restaurant up two flights of stairs so not good for the infirm) which was nothing special and overpriced, just like the drinks! We were also told that we had to pay for the aircon up front and if we didn't use it we would get a refund.
Never before in all our trips round the world have we felt so untrusted! Very unusual in Turkey as we have been told elsewhere that we can pay next day, next week or whenever!

Getting back to the room, it was ADEQUATE! The view was astounding of the mountain and the town and sea in the distance but..... Hard beds, flat pillows, one cover which resembled a sofa throw with no sheets, tiny bathroom, all doors squeaked, key was bent so had trouble getting in everytime, a cupboard for a wardrobe, for the price paid it was not good! I don't know who cleaned everyone else's rooms but our beds were changed the day after we got there, which was odd! The towels were tired to say the least and were changed infrequently and still wet and dirty some days! Our two star in India was luxurious in comparison. All I can say is to the people who had good clean rooms is that they must have been in the new block!

The breakfast was ok but we felt, like a lot of other couples that we were not to eat too much as trays of food were not replenished very often and you had to pay extra for anything substantial, including fruit juice. Another problem is that they have a strict no food from outside the hotel to be brought in which is so that you will buy food there but they could at least provide a little fridge in the room for your water, which we smuggled in!
Ali was only friendly when we ate lunch and had the first meal at the hotel, the rest of the time especially at breakfast he ignored us, and was quite disgruntled when on a couple of occasions we had finished and were talking to some of the really nice people we had met,he made us feel very unwelcome, especially on the last day when he butted into a conversation to ask us and another couple when we were leaving!

The pool area is small and shaded by the sun for part of the day but ok. Just be careful of the plastic gridding round the edge because its prone to breaking and you won't get any concern for your ankle when you fall off Sarah, just concern that the plastic's broke!

We have travelled all around the world and never complained before, having been to Turkey a number of times, we have never felt this uncomfortable in a hotel anywhere. I know Sarah and Ali are a young couple but we felt that it was a shame that they couldn't be friendly towards everybody, it seemed like money is their only objective! This opinion was shared by a number of guests that we spoke to.
Needless to say we had a good holiday regardless, we visited Cafe Vita, up the hill, good food, friendly welcome and reasonable prices. It's a steep walk to the Kalamar beach club from here but you can sunbathe and eat and drink all day with a free taxi back.
You must visit 'Omar Sharif's Brother' at the bottom of the hill on Kalamar rd on the right! Very authentic and does the best Lamb chops in Kalkan! Friendly and funny!
The Akdeniz restaurant is outstanding, both good food and welcome!
Best coffees are at Cafe Del Mar in the town.
Best two meals we had were at Garden restaurant, they are still finding their feet after only being in business two summers but the lady who runs it is so happy and puts all her effort into making your meal memorable!
Last but not least we had a couple of drinks in Pasha Aparthotel every night on the long walk back up the hill,(not good for the infirm) the young lad and english couple who run it made us feel so welcome, we will probably stay there if we return to Kalkan.

This was not our first time to Turkey but our first time to Kalkan. Kalkan its self is a lovely little place where you can eat great food on one of many of the balconies over looking Kalkan and shop at some of the local shops. There's plenty to do around Kalkan which is good really because we wouldn't have wanted to spend much time at the hotel. The people staying at the hotel were really great and the Lizo does have this going for it.

We expected the accommodation to be basic and it really is. We stayed in the old part of the hotel right under the noisy bar where they seemed to be forever moving furniture around which was extremely noisy in our room. We could not fault the cleanliness of the hotel and our room was cleaned daily. The rooms could do with spending some money on them. My sheets had holes in them and the decor was some what not Turkish.

Unfortunately the down side to the Lizo is the penny pinching attitude of Ali. This is not the kind of place where you will receive even a welcome drink unless you pay for it. The breakfast was very basic and if you want extras like yogurt or juice (the kind of things you'd expect with breakfast) then you have to pay extra. In fact if you want anything at all you have to pay extra. If you don't spend money at the hotel then you won't get a warm reception. We ate at the restaurant twice in the evening and the food is good simple Turkish food but in honesty the Lizo charges more than at most places and it's hard to find a bad meal in Kalkan. On one night at the Lizo our meal (without drinks) came to more than two, three course meals and drinks and a good restaurant in town. I was charged extra for my meal at barbecue night because I don't eat meat and Ali said he'd do me fish - he didn't mention any extra charge and I could have brought 2 meals in town for this. Barbecue night cost me 36 Lira plus drinks and down the road I could have eaten as much as you like including a choice of soup, 15 mezes, 10 mains, and desert for 18 lira at The Lounge where the food is excellent. The only time Ali spoke to us was to see if we would be going to their special evenings.

The drinks in the Lizo are expensive and can be brought at most places for much cheaper. If the drinks were cheaper we may have gone to the bar every night for a drink but I think this is where the hotel loses out. Most of the guests in the hotel were of the same opinion but Ali doesn't take this on board even when told. If you walk 2 minutes up the road to cafe vita you can have a cheap beer and really good food at half the cost with the addition of great service. If you go 2 minutes the other way to Ibo's Pancake House you can have 2 beers and 2 massive pancakes with great service for about the same cost as 2 beers at the Lizo. The hotel has a strict no food and drink on the premises policy but we and many other guests took a bag out at night to 'sneak' drinks in so that we could sit and drink on our balcony at night. We would then have to dispose of these the next day. Ali would be better of serving drinks at a cheaper price.

As we were staying at the end of the season we started to feel like they couldn't get rid of us quick enough. The pool beds started to be taken in along with cushions for them. The guests in the hotel started cleaning the pool because it was covered with flies etc. As we ate breakfast one morning Ali and his dad starting dis-assembling tables - they couldn't wait for just half an hour until we'd left. I can understand that everyone in any resort must be exhausted at the end of the season but I was exhausted from work and paid a lot of money to come on my holiday where I expect the same standard of service at what ever time of year I go away.

Don't be put of by going to Kalkan but I think you could find better for the price. Being made to feel welcome would be a start at the Lizo but be aware that Ali will do anything for you if you spend your money their.

This was our second year in Kalkan, and the second time staying at the Lizo. I have always said that i would never go back to the same resort but after our first trip here we were made to feel so welcome that we couldn't wait to go back. Ali and Sarah are so friendly they make you feel that you're at home with them and nothing is too much trouble. The food there is really good quality and we spent many a night sitting in the bar to the early hours just relaxing and having a laugh. Would recommend this holiday to anyone without any hesitation. Already planning to go back next year.

We had a amazing time at Lizo hotel. Ali and Sarah are very friendly and helpful to all the guests, and a great laugh too! The food was amazing, we planned on going to town to eat dinner most nights, but ended up staying at Lizo, as it was that nice. The bbq and Meze nights are particularly worth staying for! Rooms were very nice and clean, with great views, and VERY effective air-con. We really loved Kalkan as a destination, and being at the Lizo made it all the better. I would recommend it to anyone!

We stayed at Lizo Pension for 2 weeks. Kalkan is a wonderful place. The Lizo leaves a lot to be desired. Our fellow guests were the most delightful aspect of our time there. We were unfortunately in the old part of the Pension. The 'shower room' off our bedroom was so small that if you sat on the loo your feet were in the shower tray and if you used the wash basin your feet were in the shower tray at the other end and all the plumbing was visible! The owners Ali and Sarah were neither professional nor welcoming. If they liked you and you spent money there you were in, if your face didn't fit, Ali was surly and rude. I not only experienced this personally and unprovoked but witnessed his rudeness about a fellow guest. Kalkan itself we loved but would not recommend this place to stay.

I've worked in the travel industry for many years and have rarely come across such divided opinion about a place to stay. Fair enough, most of the reviews are full of praise with notes about returning again but we wouldn't. The accommodation is basic, as expected, it's clean and as we spent only minimal time in the room, we had no complaints. The welcome, on the other hand was poor, and when we declined the air conditioning the atmosphere (not the room) became decidedly frosty. We ate at the hotel the first night and the food was OK but the hotel's offer to put the air-conditioning charge onto our restaurant bill was also declined. (We don't like air-conditioning and pointed that out but I think the loss of the £3.50 a night surcharge must have been too much for them to bear!). From that point on we weren't exactly made to feel welcome - in fact were basically ignored - which is a shame. I'm sure had we have chosen to spend more money at the hotel we could have redeemed ourselves but because of the atmosphere we chose to spend our holiday money elsewhere. Had we have not booked a package deal, we would have definitely moved on.
Ali and Sarah are clearly popular with many of the guests and for that reason I can understand why so many return - but it didn't work out for us. We love Turkey and the Turkish people. We've stayed in many hotels and guest houses and, knowing what's out there, can't think of any reason for returning to the Lizo.
