“A very nice surprise!”
Reviewed 2 November 2012

Nice rooms, amazing lunch, perfect service make a stay in this hotel very pleasant expirience. Also the price was reasonable (we were there in after season). In addition to this the owner also offered a very early breakfast, since we had to leave early in the morning, what is also not usual in turkey.

Brian & Linda

Just returned from a second week long stay at Hidden Garden (first was in June 2011) & have to say that the owner Cagla (pronounced Charla) ,assisted by Ali & his wife made us feel really special with thier attentive service & 'nothing too much trouble' approach.

The setting if a bit remote say 5/6 kms out of Kalkan has a fantastic wooded backdrop & is ideal for peaceful days around the pool.

The rustic accomodation is very clean with bedding/towels changed regularly but the outstanding feature is the warm welcome extended to all guests .

We will definitely return again to this hidden gem in the not too distant future & would recommend to anyone without hesitation.

Room Tip: A room/cabin on the outer edges of the property are quieter ie away from the main reception.

Don't do it! Don't go there even for free!!

Hidden Garden is not in Kalkan but about five Kms out of town up (or down) a very steep hill and along a pooly mantained and badly lit country road which the local youths like to tear along on their Chinese made motorbikes, a recipe for disaster if ever there was one!

The list of amenities at Hidden Garden are a work of fiction. There was no TV, no WiFi, only a small capacity AirCon unit in the kitchen/diner and none in the bedroom. The electrics were decidely dodgy, sockets didn't work and one in the bathroom directly in line of the shower that did work! There was somethng seriously wrong with the wiring in general as the lights flickered constantly.
The owner/houskeeper owns a bad tempered and noisy dog that appears to have the run of the place, don't approach it when its on the loose because it turns nasty very quickly, We choose not to eat there as the kitchens looked like they were in urgent need of a steam clean, absolutely filthy. Come to think of it the bed mattress had what appeared to a ''map of Australia'' stained into it which was rather yucky.

The bathroom was a laugh, so cramped that you were inclined to smack your elbow on the door when trying to have a shave or dry off after a shower but that is assuming you have water to shower and shave with. The place appears to have its own well with an electric pump and given the dodgy state of the electrics we were without water for two out of our three days there as the pump had failed. That means no water for flushing the loo as well, just what you don't need with the temp nudging 40c. The buildings are old pine chalets which might well have been charming when new but are now well past their prime.

After two sleepless nights due to the constant barking of the aforementioned mutt which also attacked me when I tried to finds its owner at 03.00 who appeared to have left the bloody thing to its own devices again, we left the place.

Kalkan is a pretty town with many places to visit and many clean places to stay and eat in but Hidden Garden is certainly not one of them.

Room Tip: There aren't any!

First impression on arrival at 0200 AM was OK, and we were allowed to have a very late breakfast given our arrival time.

However, after this initial positive impression things went downhill rapidly, resulting in us cancelling our booking and leaving 2 days early - simply had enough.

Why you may ask?

• Clearly the pictures used, and the description of the hotel amenities, in this review are well out of date.
• The photo of the restaurant made me laugh - now it seems to be a dumping room for the staff to sit in, with a large screen TV on one table.
• A la carte restaurant - where???!!!!
• The kitchen and food preparation area looked absolutely FILTHY.
• Chalets are very 'tired' - in fact the whole place has an air of 'tiredness' about it.
• No wifi that we saw in the room.
• No TV, therefore no satellite or cable.
• How you could get 24 hr room service in the absence of staff on site is beyond me!
• No tea or coffee making facilities in the chalet at all - but there was a fridge.
• There is air-con in the sitting room only, not in the bedroom.
• Anyone with any mobility problems would also have serious difficulty due to all amenities being accessed by many sets of stone steps (see trip hazards).
• Toilet and other waste bin not emptied for 3 days – toilet roll and towels not replaced till we were asked for our chalet key; just as well we didn’t lose it as there only seemed to be one key!
• Bathroom: clearly built as an ‘add-on’/afterthought, it is the smallest bathroom I have ever seen in commercial gust accommodation: the bathroom door opens directly onto the toilet, and with it open you cannot use the sink! To dry yourself straddling the WC was the roomiest option (I jest not), or standing in the living room as option 2. There was no option to hang the shower head (multidirectional – i.e. sprayed everywhere but on you!) without washing the rest of the bathroom down - over the top of the shower curtain.
• Electric: The lights in the chalet constantly flicker, and many of the electric outlets did not work – clearly serious issues with the voltage regulation and I wouldn’t recommend plugging any of your appliances, charges, laptops, etc without some form of protection unless they are expendable! As the places only water supply is from its own well, no power = no water, shower, toilet, etc. Several times during our stay we had no useable shower or toilet in 30c.
• Pool: Seemed clean but pool surrounding (overflow type pool) seems dirty – little smell of chlorine so not sure how it would stand up to bacterial testing. The access hatch to the pool pump house was left open and unguarded - a 2-3 meter drop. This in my opinion makes it unsuitable for children.
• Trip Hazards – criss-crossing the whole complex are a series of 3” water hoses, most crossing steps and public access areas.
• Dangerous dog – The ‘manageress’ has a quite large ferocious dog that you are warned not to approach – most of the time is not tethered. For 2 nights in a row, it barked non-stop for several hours; when my partner went to investigate one night in case someone was injured, it seemed all the staff had gone and left it to its own devices. ‘Guarding’ the only steps out of the complex, it went into attack mode.

After 2 nights of no sleep – we called it quits. This is not a place to relax, not a place for children given the dog, and the pool pump room access hatch. Please also note, the place is not within walking distance of town and you need to either hire a car, or use taxis.

Frankly the place suggests to me an absent owner who has put a ‘manager’ in place and other than collecting the cash, never checks. My advice is to give it a big MISS. There are better options in Kalkan than this very tired and sad offering.

We are family with 4 children, enjoyed staying there, we felt like visiting our friends. The staff were very friendly, they treat us as special guests. The hotel located in the mountain area and relatively close to the beach, it has large swimming pool surrounded by lovely garden. They offer half board meals breakfast & dinner as part of the room price.

While we are there we felt we are the only guests in the hotel.

Definitely if we visit Kalkan we will stay there.
