“Very relaxing stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 September 2013

Just returned from a week at the Lighthouse and pleased to be able to add to the increasing number of five star reviews for this hotel.
Rather than repeat all the previously detailed positives with regards to the locations and the views and the attendant service levels provided by the managers Gillian & Ozam, and the superb holiday rep Steve, I will address some of the comments made in the few not so positive reviews below to give the ad juxtaposition.
The Deniz Feneri Lighthouse Hotel is owned and managed by the UK travel Company Exclusive Escapes and is used exclusively for UK travellers (the clues in the name). It is located in Kas, a two hour transfer from the airport, which is made as comfortable as possible with water and cold towels provided and stops if necessary. It is built into the hillside of the Kas Peninsula and whereas this does afford wonderful views, there are a lot of steps throughout the property. As well as being well managed it has high staff levels that are trained to be efficient and friendly.
Therefore the Lighthouse Hotel would not be suitable for those British travellers who:
A) Prefer to avoid fellow Brits when on vacation
B) Prefer their own company whilst on vacation and not to interact with hotel staff and fellow guests or
C) Cannot do steps
D) Cannot do coach journeys beyond an hour.
There are several different levels of accommodation available at the Lighthouse, from suites and villas with their own pools to the twin and double accommodation housed in two or three storey blocks, but due to the slope each with their own ground level entrance. For these the higher level accommodation has the best views and the ground level rooms have their own sun loungers but not all have sea views, usually only partial. But the hotel web site is very clear in what rooms (with the exact room numbers) afford what, so do your research before and when booking with Exclusive Escapes and you then wont be ‘surprised’ when arriving at The Lighthouse. For ourselves we went for a deluxe room as we wanted the guaranteed sea views and some privacy and although the second level room had a small balcony with chairs instead of sun loungers, it was more private and afforded a sea view to die for from both the bedroom and the larger extremely well equipped bathroom, which more than compensated for the additional cost over a standard room.
We found the food at the Lighthouse to be very good in both quality and quantity. The breakfasts provided a very good choice of local and traditional breakfast items and the availability of pancakes and omelets freshly cooked to order virtually in front of you meant I had many more eggs than I really should have done during the week. It is true to say however, that the cost level of the evening a la carte options is roughly double what you will be paying for equivalent meals in the restaurants in Kas.
We ate in town most evenings but utilised the hotel for the arrival night and the sea side BBQ feature night and the food was good on both occasions.
It is a true comment that the breakfast staff will ask you on the evening event days if you intend to attend, but this is not done in a pushy way to sign you up as intimated in a negative review below, but just because they have to gauge the number of attendees to prepare the food. A full agenda is included in the welcome pack provided on arrival, so it is easy to plan your attendance or not to be able to give a reply when asked, however grumpy you may be before your first morning coffee.
It is easy to get into town. The hotel does run a shuttle bus but the evening 6.00PM and 8.00PM runs in and the 11.00PM back do get booked up. However the local bus that runs round the peninsula every 30 minutes is easy to utilise and costs a mere 2.25TL per trip. And then if you do decide to enjoy the local bars till late it’s a fixed 20TL taxi fare back and the yellow taxis are plentiful from the taxi ranks around the central tea gardens.
The included gulet cruise day was one of the most relaxing day boat trips we have ever been on. Again the Exclusive Escapes owned boat is exclusive to Lighthouse guests and takes a maximum 12 people per day. Its focus is on relaxation and swimming in the wonderful turquoise sea, so it’s true to say it doesn’t travel very far. If you want to explore the coastline and surrounding islands plentiful additional boat trips are available from the Kas harbour. And yes the free hamam is really a tourist friendly hamman lite, and you won’t get the workout of a real one. But is still good fun and should be enjoyed.
There is no need to carry your wallet in the hotel as all expense can be put against the room. You receive an interim bill on the Tuesday and then a final bill on the Friday afternoon before departure. The hotel computer system allows the bill to be detailed by which location the cost was incurred and whether it was food or drink. So on the very slight off chance of a discrepancy (none seemed to happen during our week) it can be highlighted to reception and fixed well before final checkout, unless of course you are of an antagonistic nature and like to finish your holiday by instigating an argument before boarding the bus back to the airport.

Room Tip: Do your research on the hotel website to decide which room fits your requirements and then discuss w...

We stayed here for two weeks at the end of July returning at the beginning of August. We had a nice luxury room about half the way up the hill which had excellent views across the bay and was kept spotless by cleaners that you hardly ever saw.

We found the staff very friendly but not cloying (which can be the case at some Turkish hotels we have stayed at) indeed some of the waiters had a good sense of humour and weren't past joining in with the guests (in a good way). Indeed the waiters seemed to largely run the place but Gillian and/or Ozam were around at breakfast and other times if you needed to speak with them. And personally saw us off when we left.

Note that there is a 3% charge if you pay your bill by debit or credit card. We paid most of our bill by TRL cash (£ and Euros also accepted) and the small remainder by credit card.

The sea front is on rocky platforms with step ladders to reach the sea (although the water is deep enough to dive in if you're careful and do a shallow dive out. There is also a floating platform. The number of beds by the sea front was quite tight (although they were making more and putting them out by the end of our second week) but we always managed to find something.

Meals were served either at the restaurant behind reception or down by the waters edge (at a significant effort on behalf of the staff who had to carry all the food and extra equipment up and down the steep hill).
Fish Night by the water's edge was excellent - we chose our fish from a wide selection of very fresh fish and we had the best fish meal of the holiday.

Prices aren't cheap (about UK price levels) so well worth considering going to eat in Kas. We probably did half and half.

Getting to and from Kas was either by hotel mini bus or dolmus. You have to be very quick to book your space on the hotel mini bus. We never booked a return and used the dolmus which was quite an experience. The dolmus can be flagged down along the route and you just have to let the driver know when you want to get off (this might mean raising your voice quite a bit if its busy).
The hotel is on a peninsula and the route the bus takes is one way so that although you may be heading back to your hotel others are getting on and heading the Kas for a night out this makes the dolmus very packed.
The newest dolmus have tinted windows which make looking out and spotting your destination at night very hard especially when the bus is packed (which was usually the case) but we only missed our destination once and not by too much - so don't be put off using this method - its quite cheap 2.5TRL each person each way.

Room Tip: Don't go for a basic room - the have glass patio style front doors

A happy and friendly high quality hotel. Engaging staff, most with good English and those who don't quickly fine someone who does. Decent food and just a great bar area, which draws guests together pre and post dinner for a chat and some great laughs. It was as if we had all known each other for ages - a most unexpected aspect to our stay here. We only usually experience that kind of thing when we are adventure travelling with a small group and we did end up adventure travelling with some of the other guests!
Our room was great - a wonderful view and nice and private for when we wanted to be.
Overall impression - just go, you'll love it. The couple who run the place have got it just right.

Room Tip: 400 series rooms will save your legs.

Our second visit to this hotel was such a treat. The staff are wonderful and nothing is too much trouble. The food at the Otterman night is a must and breakfast has such a selection. The swimming from the waterfront terrace is a must as well and a turltle can pop up beside you which is a delight.Gillian & Ozam are the perfect hosts with an eye to detail making your stay special. We will be back.

Being a complete fusspot when it comes to holiday accommodation it is sometimes hard to find a place that ticks all the boxes, but to my amazement I found it at the Lighthouse. It really felt like home from home. The resort is small and utterly tasteful - in fact, I do not have a single negative comment. Every minor detail is attended to, with proper thought going in to what is needed. Exclusive Escapes were excellent, and looked after us properly from the moment we phoned to enquire about a holiday with them, until we left the airport after the holiday. Steve, the representative for the Lighthouse was fantastic and came to the hotel every day; the owners Gillian and Ozan were friendly, welcoming and there to answer every question. Nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were perfectly tasteful, spotlessly clean, airy and bright, lovely toiletries, hamman towels, complimentary towels to take home, robes, tea and coffee machines, mini bar, water, excellent airconditioning. The sun loungers and umbrellas always available, clean and comfortable with fresh towels in abundance. Every space to sit and relax had beautiful views, whether it be the waterfront, the swimming pool or the sofas up at the bar. The food was good, the breakfast delicious. The shuttle buses into Kas always on time and everything is made as easy as possible. Our sons were put into two separate double rooms instead of sharing one room, which is what we had originally booked. The staff are friendly and good. I know this review sounds like an 'inside job' but it isn't! I would go back again for sure and would definitely recommend it to my friends and family.

Room Tip: There are a lot of steps, so rooms beginning with a 1 or a 2 shoudl be avoided if you are feeling la...

We stayed in one of the Pool Houses, which was fantastic – perfect hotel “room”, like a mini-villa as a hotel room. To our delight the Pool House pool was actually big enough to swim properly in and we spent a lot of time on the deck next to the Pool House just reading and some of the party taking advantage of the wifi........we didn’t need to use the main pool at all (which gave us the relative privacy we wanted). The Pool House indoor jacuzzi was very popular, if a little over-indulgent.

It is very much a “brits abroad” place which I hadn’t realised, so just N.B. if you prefer a more cosmopolitan clientele. The location was excellent – great views and only a 10 minute dolmus into Kas. Oddly the hotel minibus went at slightly inconvenient times.....6pm (but this was the “staff bus” so limited availability) and 8pm.......with the only evening return at 11pm. But the dolmus stops where you want it to, and is a very cheap trip into Kas, going every half hour.

Service was generally good, though one or 2 minor misses. Staff were attentive and friendly, some maybe a little over-friendly (but that’s maybe just us......some people love that!).

As to the food, we ate out nearly every night in Kas......partially because the food at the Lighthouse on the first night was pretty average and also expensive. We ate in one other night (Ottoman Night!) and just had the mezes, which were much better. But, you will spend a lot more eating in, with less variety, than selecting one of the many excellent restaurants in Kas. Breakfast was very good though, with a huge range of sweet and savoury options and the requisite “egg man” to do pancakes and omelettes to your specification.

The gulet cruise day was excellent – very relaxed, (didn’t travel too far, which was fine by us – more time for swimming in the sea etc) really enjoyable and with a pretty good lunch. Free hamam was very average.......only 20 mins and nothing like one I had had in Turkey previously.

We wanted a relaxing family holiday and booked a week here through Exclusive Escapes. The hotel is fantastic; lovely bar down by the sea, swimming platform, snorkels, canoes, and if you are lucky the odd turtle to swim with. Food is good and the owners and staff are exceptional. It is a truly lovely place to stay. We did the Gulet trip and went to the Hamam at the hotel, both of which were great. The hotel is built on a fairly step hillside so be prepared for steps between your room, the pool/bar/restaurant and the sea. The local town Kas is easily accessible by hotel shuttle bus/dolmus or taxi and we had a couple of great meals out there. All in all a great place.

This contemporary waterfront hotel has sweeping coastal views and awe-inspiring sunsets which reflect off the water. It has an intricate design of natural stone buildings with paths leading from the reception area through a series of pretty terraces - past several pools, garden terraces and impressive palm trees - to either the Waterfront Suites above or to the extensive private waterfront below. At a glance, the cool combination of natural stone with red roof tiles creates the impression of a mediaeval-style village - but Deniz Feneri is rather more up to the minute than that.
