“An amazing place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2009

We have just spent a week at Club Med, Palmiye in Turkey. The food was outstanding, as were the shows (and we're not normally ones for attending in-house shows) which were professional and breathtaking. The staff were courteous and friendly and the kids' clubs were so varied - our two (aged 8 and 3) dipped in and out of various activities and had a great time. The kids' show put on at the end of the week was a highlight and I cannot recommend the place highly enough. I've seen a couple of other reviews mentioning accommodation not being great. We stayed in the hotel (inter-connecting rooms) and, whilst there is quite a premium cost-wise, the rooms were lovely. If they could ship in some sand for the beaches instead of the pebbles, this place would be perfect, but even that can be forgiven because once you get in to the sea it is clear and very very warm! We would go back with no hesitation.

The hotel facilities were good and the food was excellent. Turkish waiting/pool staff were excellent.
We understood that this is a French Company, but the brochure states that the kids clubs will be staffed by English speaking staff. This couldn't be further from the truth. The staff only spoke French and totally ignored all the English speaking kids. The facilities were excellent, but we were unable to make full use of them.
My daughter wanted to have a try on the trapeaze, and we had to translate whist a "GO" (Kids worker) shouted at her in French, she was 6 years old.
In the end all the English/American kids played football together.
I would ignore the bold claims in the Club Med Brochure of this being an inclusive Holiday for ALL. Go if you are bi-lingual else ignore this company altogether!
If you complain/ask for comments then I hope they treat you with less arrogance/disdain than we were. Our Travel Agent commented that the arroagnce was appaling.

Spent a week in late August at Palmiye with two teens (14 and 16) and really couldn't fault it. As a family we had done Club Med skiing twice before, but never a summer resort, so were a little apprehensive as to how the Club Med ‘ethos’ would translate in sunnier climes. We needn't have worried, it was fantastic!

I’ve gone into quite a lot of detail here in this rather long review (!) hopefully for the benefit of readers who’ve never done Club Med before and wouldn't necessarily know what makes it a different (and better) experience than the average family-oriented resort/hotel. Also because there is not much detail on the Club Med website and I for one would have appreciated a little bit more inside knowledge before booking!

First if I describe the resort layout – it’s a biggish Club Med spread out along a beautiful stretch of private sea front, very secluded, with a stunning backdrop of mountains rising in the distance behind it. The site is roughly split into two areas, the Villagio at one end (which is the end where the Bungalow accommodation is situated) and the Hotel at the other. Everything is interconnected with attractive, tree-and-flower-lined walkways. It’s less than a ten minute stroll from one end to the other, so it’s not exactly vast! Villagio is basically the buzzier, livelier part of the resort where the younger guests tend to hang out, with its own outdoor bar and pool and a small shopping piazza. Most of the water sports are situated at the Villagio end of the beach. The Hotel end is slightly quieter and more sophisticated in style and atmosphere, also with a lovely pool plus indoor and outdoor bars. The hotel is arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central terrace/lawn area (beautifully landscaped, as all the grounds are), with the pool area just beyond looking out to sea, then two lovely, secluded grassy terraces with sun loungers before you hit the beach. The beach is interspersed with wooden jettys and the various water-sports centres, all connected by convenient wooden walkways over the sand. There are plenty of sun loungers around, we were never left hunting for one, even though it was peak season - although as others have said, if you want one in a particular 'spot' round the pools or on the beach, you're best to forget about traditional British reserve and pop your towel on that lounger before going to breakfast. The Italian, French, German and Russian guest have no qualms about it, so you might as well go with the flow.... No-one's going to tut at you or even bat an eyelid!

We stayed at the Hotel rather than the Bungalows, and were very happy we did. The bungalows from the outside looked perfectly nice to me, shaded under the pine trees and nicely positioned/ relatively secluded in immaculate grounds, close to the busy main Villagio centre but just far enough away, I would imagine, to be relatively quiet. However, rooms were smaller, darker, close together and most did not have balconies – they aren't really bungalows as such, I’d liken them more to a series of small white-washed apartment blocks, with four or five guest rooms in each block, and the Villagio Reception and main restaurant housed in separate buildings nearby, a short walk away. Your decision would depend of course on budget, family set-up and personal preferences, but the hotel accommodation was definitely of superior quality, which is, naturally, reflected in the higher price. The Hotel rooms were great, reasonably spacious, smartly furnished and nice balconies with table and two chairs - although to be honest we didn’t spend huge amounts of time on the balcony as the pool area was so nice, and cooler/ breezier for sunbathing. We opted for a 'Club Sea Side' room which had a great view, overlooking the main hotel courtyard and pool, with the sparkling sea as a backdrop - the 'Club Sea View' rooms are a little more expensive and although I'm not usually averse to forking out for a modest upgrade, personally I couldn't really see the point in this case, and was glad in retrospect that none was available when I booked. The Sea View rooms seem to be (I could be wrong, it wasn’t obvious!) on the ends of the horseshoe, if you can picture it, so they are a little closer to the sea, and are possibly marginally quieter. There’s no room service and no mini-bar in the rooms (there is a fridge though), unless you go the whole hog and opt for a Suite, but that really wasn’t a problem as there are so many places to get food and drinks around the resort, pretty much all day and all night. Room cleaning and maintenance were excellent throughout our stay.

Whilst it wasn’t an issue for us at all (in fact we really loved the overall gently buzzy atmosphere) it’s perhaps worth pointing out for some that the resort has music playing outside a few times during the day, eg, when Aqua Aerobics is going on in the pool or when an exercise class is going on in the open air gym at the Hotel. There’s also live music on the terrace of the Hotel bar during cocktail hour and at the Villagio during the nightly performances in the open-air theatre. So don’t go expecting total peace and quiet – it’s a very mellow, relaxing place and there are certainly quiet spots, but overall it’s not designed to be a haven of zen-like tranquility!

If you’ve never done Club Med before, it has a definite style to it, with a very European/French flavour – it’s basically a very classy way to do all-inclusive, with high-quality childcare, activities and entertainment thrown in, so parents get to relax and do their own thing as well. In Club Med-speak, ‘GMs’ are the guests (stands for “Gentils Membres’, very roughly translated as "gracious members") and ‘GOs’ are the front-line staff (‘Gentils Organisateurs’, or "gracious organizers.") The GOs are mostly aimed at the children, but are always visible around the resort if you need to ask anything or fancy a chat, they are all impressively multi-lingual, as are most of the hotel staff. I don’t think we came across a single one who didn’t speak English. The GOs we saw looking after the kids seemed wonderful - so energetic, enthusiastic and friendly, although not having younger kids, I can't comment more specifically than that on the Mini Club (for 2 to 4 yr olds) and Petit Club (5 to 11s).

Club Med is definitely at the pricier end of family resorts, but you honestly do get what you pay for. You really don’t need to spend a single extra penny if you don’t want to. Various attractive add-ons are available, like Para-sailing and jet-skis (we did both, great fun!), scuba diving courses, private tennis lessons, trips outside the resort, etc, but there’s more than enough to do for free if you’re on a tighter budget – obviously kids being kids, they may pester you to do extra things, but none of the Club Med staff push the extras AT ALL, it’s left totally up to you. All food, snacks and drinks, including beer, house wine and the basic spirits, are included, as is waterskiing, sailing, archery, aerobics classes, tennis, windsurfing, kayaking and twice-daily snorkeling trips on a lovely big schooner. The kids’ clubs for various ages are also included in the price and the youngsters get to do all sorts of age-appropriate activities and sports, including Circus School and taking part in a live theatrical show during the week! The Mini-Club for little ones has its own area at the Villagio end with it’s own fully supervised pool and water slides.

There's a separate club 'Passworld' for teenagers. Our son only went a couple of times as he was keener on just doing the water sports and sleeping on a sun lounger! Our daughter on the other hand pretty much disappeared from after breakfast to midnight (or later on a couple of occasions!), making new friends, hanging out at the pool, rehearsing for Show Night, learning the high trapeze, etc, etc. You do have to remember that the majority of kids are French, but she didn’t find that a problem once the ice was broken, plus she found that most spoke at least some English. It’s great for their confidence to be able to mix and make friends with other nationalities, I think our daughter felt rather sophisticated and ‘continental’ by the end of the week! She totally LOVED the independence of it all, eg, going where she pleased, doing what activities she wanted, sauntering up to the various bars and getting her own drinks, etc - while we as parents felt completely comfortable that it was a safe environment in which she could do all that. Bar staff were incredibly strict about not serving alcohol to minors (guests are given discreet wrist bands on arrival to identify age group), so we were able to relax about her being in the bars and the teenager’s night club without direct parental supervision. It’s absolutely normal at Club Med to see groups of kids and teenagers (always really well-behaved, I might add) wandering around the resort unaccompanied even quite late at night, it’s just the way the place is designed to work, and in fact it’s one of the best things about it!

The food as others have said, was top notch, buffet style in the two main restaurants (you can eat anywhere you like, whether you’re staying in the hotel or the bungalows). If you’re secretly thinking “all-inclusive buffet’” equals “poor quality re-heated rubbish”, think again! Huge selection, beautiful presentation, very fresh and excellent quality.

Couple of small tips – for the ladies amongst us in particular, it’s not a bad idea to pack a couple of ‘smarter’ things than we’d perhaps normally take to the average beach resort – the French women are very chic, well-coiffed and beautifully accessorized for the most part, so it’s a great excuse to get a bit dressed up as well! Also, if your return flight is leaving a few hours after checking out of your room on your last day, as ours was, it’s worth asking at reception towards the end of your holiday if there’s a ‘shower room’ available – it’s a spare room in the hotel that is made available for guests to shower and change before their flight. You can book it in 45-minute ‘slots’.

In summary, we had a brilliant week – as others have commented, there are very few places that cater so well for all individuals in the family. No-one felt they were compromising in what they wanted to do, as there is so much choice. Whether it’s reading and snoozing on a sun lounger all day, going full-pelt at all the sports on offer, or doing a mix of everything, it really is an amazing holiday and you won’t regret booking it.

The location is stunning, the water sports excellent, the food mouth-watering. Only the rooms (Villagio) are appalling. Mine is quite noisy (central aircon is just around the corner), in desperate need for some fresh paint and other refurbishment. Shame – as this is otherwise a brilliant place with friendly staff

We have just returned from two weeks at Palmiye, travelling with grandparents, two 12 year olds and a very sporty 8 year old. We ALL had a fantastic time and felt truely refreshed and relaxed by the end of our stay. We were 'clapped' into the resort by GO's and 'waved' off by GO's. A lovely touch.

The food was fantastic every day and night. Indeed some of the food displays were stunning. The chefs obviously took a real pride in their creations.

The children loved the freedom of choosing their own food, ordering their own drinks and wondering around without an adult. One of the children contracted an ear infection. It was easy to see a doctor on site and get medical attention.

Yes, there is a French bias but we never had any difficulty in communicating. The GO's were always professional, happy and very friendly - Lia & Fred in particular deserve a special mention as far as we are concerned.

We were treated to some extremely good shows in the evening - I'd particularly mention Evita and the Circus shows. However, it was the shows which the kids club and teens put on that are really noteworthy. Where could you go in the UK where over eighty 11 to 17 year old BOYS and girls on holiday would be prepared to rehearse a dance show? The joy of performing that excluded from those teenagers was a joy to see. The KidsClub shows were as delightful as ever with some great costumes and choreography.

We all stayed in the bungalows, they were shady, very quiet, well cleaned and perfectly adequate for the amount of time spent in them. Importantly, they had good showers. One minor issue with the air conditioning was sorted out within the hour.

Thanks to the whole tennis team, we played a lot, had group lessons and our 8 year old had private lessons. We all hopefully returned slightly better players.

Finally, my only little tips - get your towel down early (I mean early). It can be difficult to get a seat at the speciality restuarant. The hotel pool was much quieter than the Villagio pool - you decide which suits you best.
