“Losing its magic”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

I have just come back from a weeks stay at the Royal Dragon. I have been before but this time I was left very disappointed. This is mainly due to the staff. Firstly ibrahim in the restaurant who rolled his eyes as our party of ten arrived for dinner. He was very rude and huffed and puffed as he had to do some work. This made the dining experience awkward and very un enjoyable . The main issue though came with the bar where they serve cocktails. The main batman was called osman. He shouted at a member of his staff as we tried to order, then got angry at us. He then aggressively tried to obtain a tip by asking if I had change of 20 euros, I said no, then he said what about ten? Again I said no. He then said, so you don't even have five euros?! He made me feel embarrassed and very upset. He ruined the Royal Dragon for me, my family and I shall tell my friends.

We have just returned from our 7th time in Turkey, with this being the first time at the Royal Dragon. We have stayed at the Voyage Belek 3 times and didn't think we could beat it but this hotel is just as good if not better. We travelled as a family with a 12 and 10 year old.
Everywhere is spotless and very spacious. It never feels crowded and there are many different pool areas so the pool is never busy.
The food was amazing and there is something for everyone. We really enjoy our food and there was always so much choice. Service was excellent too.
We had a 2 room family suite which we preferred as you can shut the door and have privacy from the children whereas the duplex rooms are more open plan. The rooms were huge and perfect for families.
The entertainment team are a credit to the hotel. Always happy and friendly but not pushy. They do a fantastic job and provide some great activities. My son really enjoyed the teenager activities such as table tennis, darts, airgun and football.
The beach is perfect especially for children as it is shallow and sandy with no stones or shingle.
I can't think of any bad points and we will definitely be returning here.

Stayed here may/June 2013 for 10 nights. Loved every minute. Food great, pools great, entertainment surprisingly very good. Staff were good although they did pay more attention to tip-paying guests! Our kids loved the funfair, slides and kids club. Kids club staff did a brilliant job and are so clever with all the different languages they speak. It was slightly frustrating for the English speaking kids to wait until everything had been explained in German and Russian before they heard an English word despite 75 percent of the kids there were English!!? It didn't bother them too much! Tip - go to beach bar for lunch and also quickly head to the beach bar in the evening at 10ish for great live music or dj and dancing. Beach party was worth going to as well!

We went to the Royal Dragon for whit week with our 3 daughters and we had a fantastic time. The hotel is spotlessly clean, you constantly see people wiping surfaces and polishing windows. Even on the beach there are friendly staff collecting empty cups and bottles regularly.

With regards to other reviews we read before going, at no point did we feel under any obligation to tip. We received excellent service the whole time we were there and the staff really did go out of their way to make sure we were cared for.

There are a lot of people from a lot of nationalities at the resort and English is not always spoken first but staff were always quick to make themselves understood when you said hello.

The mini-club is fun for small children but as someone else has mentioned it is not at all secure, they don't take children's names and there is not even a gate at the entrance. We always made sure we had sunbeds that overlooked the play area so we could watch our own children. The mini-disco was fun for 1 or 2 nights but it was literally the same CD every night so it did get boring for us adults.

The toddler pool was brilliant for our 2 small daughters, it warmed nicely in the sun and was shallow enough for them to play in safely. The bigger pool tended to be a lot cooler but the children didn't mind.

The aqua park is excellent, fun slides and a burger bar underneath. The only concern I would have here is that the lower slides have no lifeguard watching over them and the pool where you emerge is also out of view of any life guards so make sure you watch smaller children.

The funfair was a little questionable. From our room you could hear the Pirate ship creaking as it swang back and forth and when I took the children on the big wheel it did seem to be held together with rust and cable ties but the children loved it.

The food is second to none. A huge choice every morning and night in the restaurant, a choice of places to eat at lunch time. We can wholeheartedly recommend the Vento bar on the beach and the pizza tent near the entrance to the beach. Also, if you have small children, the children's restaurant is open from 6:30. There is rarely anyone there that early and it also gives you a back door into the main restaurant to grab a table before the 7pm rush.

We used our a la carte booking for the fish restaurant and although we didn't really have a clue what to expect our waiter was brilliant in guiding us through it. Watch out for the mint liquor afterwards though!

Also while we were there our middle daughter had a birthday. The hotel provided us with a birthday cake in our room for free. We could have also had one with an a la carte booking and table decorations for €15 but we thought she was a little young to be bothered with that.

There are plenty of bars with water available around the clock, there are a couple of different cocktail menus but you will find there are no measurements of spirits so if you order 2 the same you could very well get one that blows your head off and one that tastes like it's fruit juice. The local beer is drinkable and the slushy drinks taste like they were made in the 80s.

We caught the local bus into Side for some sight seeing and a bit of shopping. It was 3 lira each and not too bad an experience. The shopping was more fun than the centres across the road from the hotel as the sales people were a lot more receptive to haggling. We picked up some real bargains. If you're into genuine counterfeit designer gear then it's definitely the place to be.

All in all we would definitely recommend this hotel for a stay in Side.

Room Tip: Duplex rooms are great for families but do get hot. We left 1 card in the slot while we were out to...

Return visit gave the same high standards of cleanliness and service as 18 months ago Fantastic selection of food at every meal time in the main restaurant. The entertainment team made the holiday so much more enjoyable, thoroughly enjoyed Pilates and Zumba every day, and the shows in he evening. The pools are spotlessly clean and all pool areas cleaned thoroughly every evening. The staff were very friendly and willing to help, apart from a bad experience with the guest relations who didn't seem to want to be as helpful as their role would suggest but that was the only negative experience in an otherwise fantastic holiday. Can't wait to go back again, thank you Royal Dragon

Room Tip: Sea view room on level 3 perfect!

We travelled for 2 weeks over Easter, and are a family of 4, a 3 year old and a 1 year old. We had a 2 room suite and travelled with Thomas Cook. We found the hotel to the be outstanding in every respect, from food, to the room, service levels and in particular wonderful staff at the Kids (Mini Club). We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and found it to be value for money. I would make the following points though, that I stress were our own personal thoughts. The weather over this period was perfect 25-28deg. However, the pools were freezing. No one was swimming and if they did it was for a quick dip. Our 3 year old didnt use the pool much at all, just too cold, and the hotel does not heat the outside pools. The indoor pool is supposedly heated, but we couldn't tell the difference. The kids clubs and staff are wonderful, but the hotel offers no lock down facility, in other words, you can't really drop young chilldren off and come back. So you will have to be there with them, young ones the whole time. It is well located next to the pool so you can sit by the pool and surpervise them from there. We were on level 5 on the East side of the building and everynight we went to sleep with music being played from the nightclub. So what you ended up getting was a constant bass / drum thud humming nonstop. Ear plugs which my wife and I both wore did nothing. It took us a few nights to get used to it. Finally, if you are British and expect to see other Brits, don't. You are in the minority, this is a predominentaly German hotel, and the cuisine and activites cater to this. The staff greet you in German and the other guests assume you are was well, so if you go, brush up on your German speaking skills. In every respect it was hard to fault this hotel. It was very very good and the acqu and luna parks are a real bonus for the kids.

Room Tip: Stay away from nighclub side of hotel.
