“Great holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2012

We had a great time in Turkey at Melas Resort Hotel. Highlights included a la carte meals at Turkish Restaurant and Fish Restaurant. Biggest delight however was the Gala Evening Dinner on our last night - a Saturday. A grassy field filled with decorated chairs and tables surrounded by a fantastic buffet - very artistically arranged. A floodlit stage provided great entertainemt of a high quality. Attentive waiters promptly filled wine glasses. Towards the end of the meal "The Melas Ice-Cream Parade" provided great excitement - chefs led the way with flaming torches and music added a suitable fanfare as it was paraded around the field. A truly delightful evening.
The heat in Turkey was sometimes oppressive but our hotel room had the best and most effective air-conditioning system I have ever experienced. An icy blast welcomed us into our room after a day on the beach! The room was very spacious and always clean. Fantastic sea views although we never sat on the balcony due to the heat.
Every day was spent on the beach as sunloungers were very scarce around the pool. Sunbeds were very plentiful and wll-shaded on the sandy beach. The sea was like a warm bath and we swam 4 or 5 times a day. There are cold drinks available all day. The beach bar is close by and we enjoyed daily lunches by the water (although the menu is a bit limited)
I can thoroughly recommend this hotel for a relaxing week. We did nothing but swim, read, relax, drink cocktails etc etc.
One hour transfer from the airport in air-conditioned coach.
We paid about £750 all-inclusive for a week through Co-op Travel. & hour flight delay at the start spoilt the start of the holiday.

We stayed at the Melas hotel for our summer vacation in Aug 2012 and we had a very good time! The hotel's first look when we arrived was very nice and very clean, you have a lot of space and sitting area in the hotel itself. And about the remarks that staff was very rude, we don't agree at all. Let's say we where 'warned' by reading the reviews before we left and where expecting this but nothing at all.. people where very friendly, especially in the restaurant, very willing to help en serve you. A thank you and friendly smile is priceless. We had very very rude people thinking that the place was ruled by them, so probably the same where having the comments about the staff I'm sure. 1 thing we where bothered by big time was the chair and towel-war at the main swimmingpool. People literally came before 7 am in the morning to put their towel and left again to go back to bed, if you came at 07.30 am there where no chairs left anymore (of the 200 which are available). Regularly people didn't show up during the day for their reserved chairs or very late in the afternoon, so also nobody else could use them. We don't understand that the hotel doesn't react against this as a lot of people where troubled by it. We also had the umbrella-war, really true. Normally 2 chairs where accompanied by 1 umbrella but there where couples which where so rude that very very early in the morning, they took several umbrellas to barricade their chairs all around.. they didn't care that the others didn't had one. Why people do this is a big questionmark, this is only sad and to feel sorry about. To end positive, the food was of great quality, variety and amount. For breakfast, lunch and dinner there whas a huge choice, very well taken care off and clean. Actually during the day, you can always eat somewhere, from breakfast, to late breakfast, to lunch, to snacks at the beach or swimminpool, to the coffee break, dinner and evening snack.... nobody leaves here hungry. Note for who it might concern, there is also cola light to drink.

Room Tip: If you want to hear music and evening activity, ask a room at the swimmingpool, if you want to sit q...

This was our second visit to the Melas with our excellent friends the Thompsons.Having both loved it so much last year we decided to rebook for this year and then having heard of refurbishments throughout the hotel we were even more excited. When we arrived we were not dissappointed. The refurbishments are stunning and none of us could believe how much has been done in the short period of time that the hotel was closed. The bedrooms are stunning and really well refurbished with a very modern style. Walk in showers in the bathrooms and flat screen tv's and wood effect flooring in the main bedrooms along with trendy looking materials and decor. The food was again very good with lots of choice at all meal times, except for the choice for children at evening meal. The service is excellent most of the time and only at peak
times do you feel that it becomes slightly slack.Staff are friendly and despite the obvious language barrier they are really fun and try to have as much banter as possible, which I think is good to see in a 5 star hotel, not being a lover of stuffy environments.
However there were some down sides to our excellent stay at the melas.
Since last year the capacity of the hotel has increased its capacity by about 300 guests and with this has brought some extra problems.
. One of the main difficulties is the number of sun loungers around the pool area. There are simply not enough for the number of guests, and most days we had to get up at around 6 a.m.in order to reserve them. This I feel is unacceptable on holiday in a 5 star hotel. The other issue is with seating for the entertainment in the evening. Most evenings there simply wasn't enough, especially for the more popular shows. The hotel has simply grown too large and cannot really cope with the number of guests it has at full capacity.Probably nothing to do with the hotel as well was the fact that all of our party of 8 were ill at some point during the holiday. It could have been anything from the heat to the water, not really sure.
Other than that we had an excellent holiday and would probably return again, but not next year as we're off to Egypt.
.

This was our 4th visit to the Melas Hotel, the 1st since its winter refurbishment. Although many of the familier faces of staff have left, we found that the service standards had remained high. The comments previous, we feel are unjust regarding rude staff etc. These guests need to stand back and look at them selves. Many of the british guests we observed, especially the multi family parties, were brash and loud, please and thank you are small words but go a long way. The other nationalities in the hotel, Russians and especially the Germans DO NOT get preferential treatment in my experiances, many may feel they do but German is the second language in Side.
Would reccommend this hotel to anyone.

Transfer to hotel took around 1 hour and was straight forward.

Check in was very slow, we were the only people to check in but were made to wait 20mins. The receptionist was chatting and didnt seem interested in seeing to us. This becomes a familiar feeling throughout our holiday. This hotel has the worst reception team i have ever came accross, they role their eyes at you, ignore you and just dont seem interested at all.

The rooms are amazing, very modern and stylish. Nice large room with newly refurbished furniture. Wet room bathroom and big power shower. Rooms also have a flat screen tv and a couple of arm chairs. Balcony is nice and has solid chairs and table, didnt get the sea view we asked for though. Beds are very comfy and nice fluffy pillows.

Restaurant is big and has enough tables for guests, large buffet area and hot service area in corner. Service on the whole is very poor, staff are quite rude and dont smile or greet you. Some are nice but it seems that the German guests get the best service and treatment. Breakfast is nice and has lots of choice, no fried eggs though!! Lunch is a scaled down version of dinner but is ok with some nice breads and fruits. Dinner has a good choice but does get repetetive over the 2 weeks. No theme nights except for the Gala night which is served in the garden of the Holiday village.

Unfortunatly everyone in our group got painful cramps, upset stomachs and diarrhoea. We holiday abroad in hot places regulary and never suffer like this before, The chemist at the end of the road must have made a fortune, everywhere you looked people had carrier bags from them! We spoke to a lot of other families that had suffered from this too.

Lounge bar looks lovely and is nice and cool with air con, The lady who serves there during the day is lovely and always has a smile and says hello. Night time has table service which is a nice touch. Problem is that the staff are rude and dont really want to serve you! Tables rarely get wiped down and glasses start to pile up. Good choice of local spirits, wines and Efes Beer.

Pool bar service is good during the day and staff are polite and pleasent. This doesnt open until 10am and you cant get a drink before then unless you go back up to restaurant. Could do with some self sevice machines like they have at the holiday village next door. Drinks are served in glasses at the tabled area and plastic round the pool. Snacks are not available here even though it is advertised as being so. Cakes and tea are served at 4pm. The pool bar is used for the nighttime shows but does get very busy with not enough chairs for guests. Service is back to rude and unhelpful, a few guys are good though and will look after you.

Pool area is nice but there is not enough beds!! This causes major problems and fist fights between the guests. Having to get up at 6am for a bed is not what you expect at a 5 star hotel. German and Dutch guests would remove your towel and bags and simply take your bed. This needs resolving but if you complain they say just get up earlier!! Pool guy is nice and helpful and always says hello. He never stops working and has to put up with people complaining all day!
Despite what the brochures say, this hotel has only 1 pool that you can use. Next door is the holiday village and has more pools and a better bar area. Water park is good but is quite a trek away, you can get drinks here.

Beach bar has pizza and burgers at 1230 but is very busy during the day.

Beach is ok and has plenty of beds, bring sea shoes as quite rocky in places.

Kids club is hotel run. Our daughter stopped going as staff would wind the children up and get them upset!!

Some shows are good some are bad, the animation team put alot of effort in are happy to chat to and will sit and play games with you.

We would not go back and would not recommend it to anyone. Poor service, poor staff, fights between guests and illness throughout.

We found the staff very friendly and happy. Service was fast and rooms extremely clean. Food plentiful great variety and freshly cooked. Just check flight options as the agent we used in Glasgow misinformed us on flights and we ended up flying back at 4am in the morning and I did not find the Thomas Cook Rep. helpful and their plane seats unable to even cross my legs. Will stay there again but this time 2 weeks. Fiona Winkler S.A

Room Tip: stay near the pool/restaurant level as it is close to all amenities including the private beach

Returned from the Melas resort on Thursday morning, this hotel was recommended by a going places travel agent, as a last minute deal she said this was a brilliant hotel, and recommended it over other another hotel in Tunisia , well wish we would have gone with the other one, this has put us off from going to turkey and using Thomas cook again after giving the firm another chance after our last holiday.
Having arrived in the early hours of the morning (3.30am) after what seamed like a forever long coach journey to the hotel after such a long day we dragged ourselves out of bed for the welcome meeting at 10am going for breakfast just before to see a fight break out between a Scottish family and a German family over a sunbed, have to say the rep was brilliant and booked a trip with her and asked for advice when I broke out in a rash( had an allergic reaction to something unknown). Having seen the fight over a sunbed we can understand why to get a bed we found our self`s getting up before 7am to get one as there wasn't enough beds for such a big hotel they were all gone by 7.30am taken up by mostly German guests so much for relaxing and sleep ins. Service at the hotel was poor as soon as they knew you were English they didn't want to know as this was mostly German catered for hotel and made more fuss over them, also seeing an English guest complaining at reception seeing the lady behind the desk she didn't seem bothered and just smiled at him and he just walked away with noting done about his problem. The only good thing about our stay was our room which was brilliant on the 8th floor with side sea room beautiful view nice big room comfy beds and lovey shower, rooms cleaned daily although I did find big long black hair in my newly made bed and in the bathroom, mini bar stocked nearly every day and on the last day of checkout having already being in our room and seeing me in just a towel on my own the mini bar guy came back after 2 minutes knocked once and just walked straight in, which made me feel very uncomfortable that he knew i was in there alone and just opened the door. The hotel was also having issues with power while we was there and kept having power cuts a few times a day, food was lovely lots of choice although the day before we flew home we both came down poorly with bad gut ache and diarrhea over hearing other English guests saying the same on the same day as us they were all poorly too not sure the cause of that whether it was something they served that night before or just maybe the heat and diet combined. we didn't try the a la cart restaurant, we did book the Turkish restaurant on our last day but being ill we didn't decided against it, and went without anything to eat not to risk being any more ill on the flight home. We never saw any of the evening entertainment as it was outside by the pool and not enough space for everyone to sit and the heat outside on an evening didn't help either. Also think they need to look at the revolving door at the entrance too as the first day we saw a child get his head stuck in the door as it was going so fast and on leaving the door took our suitcases and and i didn't get chance to get myself through the door the coach rep said it was newly refurbed hotel but admitted the door was fast moving, Overall we think we paid alot of money for a last minute deal for this hotel and glad that we was only there for the week we have never been on a holiday and and been glad to be going home, think Thomas cook should re look at this hotel before selling it to ppl from the UK between rubbish service, rude German guests (and there horid pool fashion sense budgie smugglers not covering there area, socks with flip flops strutting around the pool first think on a morning was enough to put anyone off there breakfast). power cuts, fighting, and diarrhea, we will not be returning to this hotel or to turkey again and certainly not using Thomas cook again.
