Over-all a wonderful holiday! my partner and I returned home last Monday (14 July) from a two week holiday at the beautiful Maya World Hotel. we both had a thoroughly enjoyable time here and would recommend it to friends and family!!
ROOMS - hotel rooms are lovely, very modern and spacious. cleaned daily with clean towels. The bathrooms are again, spacious modern and very clean. on arrival we had been allocated a twin room looking over the rear of the hotel... check-in staff changed this for us to a double room looking over the pool!
POOLS - two large pools. one with slides and where the daily entertainment takes place and the other more of a relaxing pool. both still close together, just separated by a pool bar. there was always plenty of sunbeds at least until about lunch time so there was no need to get up extra early like in many hotels we have stayed in. the towel service is also very useful... clean towels three time a week!
FOOD - the food is amazing, a large selection of food at all meal times! the al-a-carte is almost hidden and you don't know how to book or eat there unless you speak to the guest relations advisor ( who is also a lovely lady!) it works out at about £6 for a 6 course meal of either Italian or Turkish! we dined here one evening during our last week but if we had of known sooner we would have gone a second time! there is a tomato and mozzarella salad to start, then soup, then a pasta, then a salad then a main of beef or chicken and then a dessert! the food is wonderful and it makes a nice change to have table service rather than a buffet like in the main restaurant!
ENTERTAINMENT - very very lovely entertainment staff! all very friendly and always keen to ask how you are and have a chat with you. Nina and iulea were particularly amazing! both trying very hard to include us in all activities, but were happy to smile and say hello when we didn't want to take part! the other animators Tolga and Serhan were also very charming and friendly! They work during the day and also in the evenings too often providing the evening entertainment show. daily entertainment includes: darts, water gym, belly-dancing, water polo and pool games. the evening entertainment is various acts including belly-dancers, fire shows, bingo, mr maya world (which is hilarious!) etc etc
(There is also a kids club and kids disco but as we didn't travel with any children, cannot comment on this.)
GALA EVENING - this happens every Wednesday evening, it is a lovely change and makes a fantastic evening. the relaxing pool area gets transformed into an outside dining area. cocktails on arrival, wine and water on the table and a large selection of different foods including a hog-roast and traditional Turkish kebab! after eating there is a staff parade where sparklers are lit and fire works are set off before the usual mini disco and then some form of entertainment. if you are not going to see any of the other evening entertainment or are less impressed go to this as it is very very good! we saw some dancers the first week and then a belly dancer and African tribe dancers the next.
one tip - get down for about 6:30 as the tables get taken very quickly!
STAFF - like above the entertainment staff are wonderful! restaurant staff are also very lovely. by the looks of things they get treated with little respect from other guests so saying thank you and giving them a smile seems to go along way! bar staff and lobby staff are also very friendly and helpful... always trying their best with their English language in a predominantly German and Russian hotel.
BEACH - the beach is the only downfall to the hotel... it is a short walk away which wasn't a problem however the beach is covered with large overhead covers instead of individual parasols which makes it awkward to sit in the sun how you wish to as you have no control over your cover!! the beach on a whole is slightly pebbly but the sea is lovely! very clear and cool!
LOCAL AREA - Side is the larger place to visit, we recommend you get here by bus as taxi's seem expensive!! the bus runs up and down the main road all day and until about 12am at night! as you leave the hotel and head towards the main road, wait on the corner and the bus (number 10 SIDE) will stop for you. it costs 1 euro or 6 Turkish each way. it is about a 15 min drive where then you get dropped off in a large car/bus-park. head off in a north-west direction and you will eventually come to the ruins of Side which then lead down into the main area and harbour which is a very lovely area to visit in the evening as there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. you can also walk to the another small area which you can find by turning right onto the main road and following it until you see the water fountains in the island of the road. this is a small shopping strip which comes alive at night. not as good as the harbour/Side but nice fora little walk out in the evening.
TRIPS - we'd recommend the market and boat trip duo and the back to nature tour both very enjoyable days out. The market and boat trip includes lunch on the boat whilst it sails along the river before joining the sea back to Side to watch the sun set over the harbour! The back to nature includes lunch after you have travelled up to the top of the canyon (and taken some amazing pictures) before getting ready and rafting down to the lunch point in the freeeezing cold clear waters (very nice when you've been so hot all day) fantastic for couples and groups!
OTHER GUESTS - the first few days were slightly shocking! we didn't realise human-beings could be so rude!! very few English guests (which is usually a good thing!!) and lots and lots of emotionless, rude German and Russian guests (not all of them obviously! we did make friends with a lovely Russian gentleman) they will jump into the lift before the doors have even opened to let you out... spoons were taken out of my hand before i had used them to get the food i wanted. they will gather around the restaurant 15 minutes before its due to open... and then rush inside to fill plates and plates of food which they then leave (this is obviously an annoyance to restaurant staff too)!!
