“Very good hotel”
Reviewed 13 December 2008

A very good hotel, for Turkey, where the reality is often a let down.
The hotel is of a reasonable 4 star standard. Everywhere very clean, staff friendly and helpful, food was above average, We went ultra all inclusive, 24hr bar, drink quality good.
No complaints, will stay there again.

Returned from Sealight early this morning. All in all had a fabulous stay. Had left booking to a couple of weeks' before departure (via Fleetway). For the first time in ages the flights (BA this time) were on time!

Arrival at Izmir was not great since the transfer that I thought I'd pre-booked did not arrive as expected. However, all worked out well in the end since we hitched a lift with a couple (Pete and Joan - thanks a lot, hope you enjoyed your stay) who were visiting their holiday apartment close to the Sealight.

First impressions of the hotel - quite ostentatious looking with lots of gold leaf. No doubt appealing to the multitude of new-money Eastern Europeans that were staying at the hotel! Check in was very quick - room was HUGE with a King and single bed together with seating area and balcony. We had partially obscured sea-view - but why sit on your balcony looking at the sea when the grounds and pool area were so attractive?

Food was plentiful although it did get a little bit like feeding time at the zoo from time to time. Some people were definitely making the most of the Ultra All Inclusive - where it all went I don't know. We ate in 3 of the al-a-Carte restaurants. I would definitely recommend trying to book these as close to arrival as possible since they do tend to get booked up quickly.

The seafood restaurant stood out for me - unfortunately our booking was after sunset so didn't get the full benefit of the restaurant location but the food was very good. Incidentally, some of the sunsets were amazing - having visited Oia in Santorini earlier this year on the expectation of seeing one of the world's greatest sunsets (must have missed it) I would say take your chances with Kusadasi instead - it was stunning.

The restaurant and bar staff were all great - they work incredibly long hours but were always ready with a re-fill. Those on reception looked like rabbits caught in headlights whenever I asked them anything but, to be honest, not a problem.

Loads of things to do - great pool area with water slides and private beach (don't worry about the steep walk to get to the beach - golf buggies were on hand to shuttle back and forth). Ping pong, games room, indoor pool and spa (didn't use the spa but good by all accounts). Evening entertainment - generally in the form of the aforementioned Eastern Europeans who had overdone the vodka earlier in the day! Animation team were very friendly and worked hard to get people involved in the daily activities (such as darts, fitness classes and boules). Paris the Jude Law look-alike gets special mention. Children well catered for.

Went into Kusadasi on a couple of days - Dolmus stop outside the hotel every 5 minutes or so. Found the bazaars a little intimidating at first but be firm and won't be a problem. Took day trip to Ephesus, which is a must see and very good value for full day trip.

This was my first trip to Turkey and I would definitely recommend both the country, location and this particular hotel. The hotel certainly had an international flavour (primarily former Soviet states, Dutch, Bulgarian and Israeli) - I think that I only heard a couple of other English voices in the 7 days that we were there but that's not necessarily a bad thing since you feel like you've definitely got away.

No surprises from this hotel, although not a five star. Only complaint was the inability to book an a la carte restaraunt. A days notice has to be given for the booking - we tried to book one in advance, but were told told fully booked! Not only was the next day fully booked, also for the next 6 days. Recommend to try and straight after checking into hotel.

Staff were very friendly - they work very long hours and deserve some sympathy!

That's it I guess.

We booked through Sunshine.co.uk and requested a double room with sea view.

Booking, Arrival & Reception:
The room we were allocated faced directly onto the balconies of the rooms from their newly built extension - Far from the sea view we were hoping for. The member of staff who brought our luggage to the room, was quick to point out to us that if you stand in a specific location you can in fact see the sea. To top it all off, the room had two single beds, not a double.

As we have read on the forums how friendly and helpful the hotel staff and management are, we decided to ask if they could change our room. What a futile and disappointing exercise that turned out to be. The lady at reception told us that there was nothing she could do for us as it was purely a request, not a guarantee! We asked to see the manager, who to our surprise and disappointment had exactly the same response, apart from adding that that the hotel had over 90% occupancy. I would have at least expected him to show some sympathy and to offer a look at some of the other rooms that were in fact available – but he was in stead quite dismissive. The manager then suggested that we return after 3 days when he may have something to offer, our stay was 7 days. From that point on, we found the reception staff to be very abrupt and dismissive.

During our stay we also wanted to know the price of a local call from our room – no one, including the manager could tell us – but I am sure they will know what to charge us if we had made the calls. We ended up going into the centrum(town centre) and bought a calling card from the post office at 3.75 YTL

Food:
We had absolutely no complaints about the quality and variety of food in the main dining area - “Sunrise Restaurant” where the service would vary from poor to excellent, depending on who would be serving you.

The A-la-carte restaurants where a different story. Going from best to worst, we would recommend the Chinese restaurant – the food was good and the service was what you would expect from a 5 star establishment. This was also reflected in their “comments book”.
The Italian was on nearly par with the Chinese restaurant.
The seafood restaurant cannot be beaten on location – Having dinner whilst watching the sun set over Samos island. The food was OK, but we left there feeling hungry. The service has a lot of room for improvement.
As for the traditional Turkish restaurant – STAY AWAY! It is seriously a waste of time. There is nothing we like more than learn about other people's traditions. So what a great opportunity this could have been. Although it is a set menu, we would have liked to have had some information at least on what we were getting. In stead there was no information on what we were getting, neither how you should eat it. Asking the staff about the food was pointless(we tried), as they could not tell us. The food started with what we think was a cold starter(four small platters – raw onions, parsley, two chillies and some white creamy dill mixture), or were we supposed to wait for the rest of the meal to use this as an accompaniment.
The service was diabolical. We ordered the same drinks 3 times – the first time, we waited but nothing. So we asked again, then we saw another member of staff with our drinks, go to the wrong table. When they told her it was not for them, she took it back to the kitchen. Finally we asked again for drinks and after a short few minuted we got it. By this time there were only 3 -4 tables in the restaurant, but about 5 staff. We eventually, like some other tables, got up and left... not knowing if there was anything else, maybe desert, maybe different types of food. Quite sad that we had such a bad experience in their traditional restaurant.

Room:
The room was of an acceptable standard, but we had to ask housekeeping to restock the minibar and
shampoos etc on a daily basis. Because they do not replace if there is anything left.
The beds were very uncomfortable – We took the duvets out of the cupboard to use as padding on the beds, which helped.
The air-conditioning only works when your key card is in the slot, this means that you cannot let the room cool down whilst out having dinner – you have to be in the room while the aircon is running. This is not very healthy either.

General Hotel:
Overall, the location is great, some of the staff give you good friendly service and the food is good. However, if you are looking for 5 star service and facilities, this is hotel is not recommended.
If you are from the UK, be careful what you change your pounds to. At the time of our visit the exchange rate from pound to Turkish Lira was £1 = 2YTL and £1 = 1.27 Euro. All additional costs for watersport are in Euro and if you have Turkish cash, they use an exchange rate of 1 Euro = 2 YTL. That means we would have lost about 12% paying in Turkish cash. This is the same outside the resort as well.

Excellent hotel in magnificent grounds. The views from the restaurants and bars were picture card perfect. The hotel has been built into the cliff face and has different levels or terraces all the way down to sea level.
Great for a family holiday with teenage children since there is lots of sporting activities they can join in.

The only minus about the stay was the Russian guests who seem to have a lot of new money but little education, manners or taste.

  • Liked — The choice of food and dring and the friendliness of the staff
  • Disliked — The Russian guests who seem to think they own everything

We have just returned from a 10 nighter at the Sealight and wouldnt normally write a review - but on this occasion couldnt resist! Everything about the Sealight is superb - the rooms, the staff, the pool area, the food - I could go on but to sum up - fantastic! Only downside to the holiday - and this is no reflection on the Sealight was our departure from Bodrum. If you want drink and food at the airport - dont buy from the shops there - we paid £4 for a styrofoam cup of coffee! The prices are crazy so BEWARE - take it with you. When we flew the majority of flights departing were back to the UK - makes you wonder if they have "special" prices for all the so called "rich" English as the Turks think we all are! Dont be put off tho' Turkey is great and the Sealight gets a big thumbs up from us!

This was not the hotel we had origionally booked but we were so glad to be moved this was a fab hotel, very modern, grounds all well kept, very nice staff who were always very accomodating, we were given a penthouse room, which had great views over the pool and ocean, it was classed as ultra all inclusive which means you can get food and drink 24 hours a day. Lots of different dishes of food to choose from, and there was always sunbeds available in the morning, as staff do not allow you to reserve them during the night, which is a 1st. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who likes a bit of class.
