Owner description: Site of the heroic siege in in Homer's Iliad, Troy (Truva in Turkish, Ilion in Greek) was excavated in the 1870s by Heinrich Schliemann. He uncovered civilizations dating back 5,000 years, including best-preserved Roman architecture. Explanatory materials at the site are limited, so visitors should bring a good history text or hire a guide.

“amazing town!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

Was just thinking of seeing the horse and didn't think there was that much of a town to see….was I wrong! Great antique multi-cities which were formed on top of each other. Considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, easy walkways make the visit really comfortable. Pay the 10TL and take an audio guide headset which gives an informative overview of Homer's city.

Even in the 31 degree heat, was well worth the visit. You realize why they fought over this land - it's gorgeous!
At the end, visit the official gift shop with wonderful souvenirs AND take the pictures with the horse. There's even dress up costumes with a photographer!…and well stocked cafe for the thirsty visitors. Make the time and go visit.

“Great introduction to the ancient wonders of Anatolia”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

Troy may not be Turkey's best-preserved site, but it's one of history's most iconic. It also happens to be quite close to Istanbul and you can do a day trip over an overnight trip to the site, which I highly recommend.

Upon arriving at Troy, you won't be greeted by the massive walls or old temples that you may have hoped for, but there is still a significant amount of ruins that are worth touring. Getting a guide is not necessary if you're familiar with the myth of the Iliad, but if you're not, a guide wouldn't hurt. One of the allures of Troy is its mythology. Wandering the site, imagining the epic war of antiquity, and taking in what's left of the ancient superpower make for a great visit. Plus, the site is fairly high up and affords a great view out to the sea where many conquering armies once crossed.

I'd recommend reading up a little on Troy before visiting, otherwise you might not get what you could out of it. If you're in Istanbul, consider visiting the Troy exhibit at the Istanbul Archaeology Museums. Heck, even watching the movie Troy (despite its inaccuracies) serves you well. If you're looking for Turkey's best site, this isn't it, but it's certainly its most storied.

The souvenir shop at Troy is also probably the best one I saw in Turkey.

Of note, though it is gimmicky, their wooden horse is actually fun. Also, if you're passing through Canakkale nearby, the horse from the movie Troy is in the harbour.

“Trojan Horse in Troy, Canakkale”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

If you are familiar with Homer's Iliad, then going to the site supposedly of the ancient city of Troy (as per Iliad - 12th to 13th century BC) could fire up your imagination of the Trojan war between the Achaeans (Greeks) and the Trojans. There are 11 excavation sites or layers on the site with the current belief that Troy VII site is the site described by Homer in his epic Iliad.

If it is true that the site being marketed to tourists as that of the Homeric ancient city of Troy, then one would be disappointed. The ruins are not that extensive, and a lot of imagination is required to really appreciate it as an ancient city. As a tourist attraction, there is a wooden "Trojan Horse" on the site where tourists can climb up and take pictures, playing out games of Homeric Iliad. Some of the ruins are mostly fragmented boulders, columns, amphitheater, and debris, and one can easily conclude this is just simply a tourist attraction. However, a lot of archological studies and research of the site has been done, and it might just be true that Troy VII excavation site could be the real city of Troy. This archeological site should not be compared with the Pergamon, Perga, or Ephesus archeological sites..

Mustafa was a brilliant guide and if you do this tour and have him as your guide, you'll know just what I mean. The location itself is amazing, even in the wet.
