“Classics of Turkey with NEON was SUPERB”

We did a Classics of Turkey with Neon and it couldn't have been better... maybe not so hot! Our driver and guide were amazing, passionate and knowledgeable about their wonderful country. Food was excellent including specific dietary requirements.

“Buyer Beware- Neon Tours Classics of Turkey”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 October 2012

BUYER BEWARD! Key tours/Neon tours (Key’s Turkey based partner) seems like a great deal… until you realize how they truly operate. We just returned from the Classics of Turkey tour with Key/Neon tours, and while there were some strong points (small number of participants, great driver, knowledgeable guide, some nice hotels), the negative points far outweighed them.
First, watch out for fALSE ADVERTISING, which this company engaged in on various levels. We purchased our tour through Living Social at the advertised price. However, the company then increased the airfare, after we had purchased the package. At that point we had already purchased non-refundable connecting flights, and were forced to accept the increase . In addition, the itinerary stated that we would overnight in a variety of cities on our tour. This was a half-truth. In actuality, hotels were often so far from the cities that it was logistically impossible or financially prohibitive to get there on one’s own to explore, dine, etc. If you’re looking for an opportunity to experience true Turkish culture, this isn’t it. All dinners and lunches were provided as stated by the company, however, the tour failed to mention that lunches would be at rest stop gas stations, even when towns/restaurants were easily accessible. All dinners were at the hotels- no authentic Turkish dining at all- but this was not specified on the itinerary. Our itinerary stated that we would be visiting the ancient city of Pergamon, described as one of Turkey’s most beautiful ruins. Exciting! However, the tour guide only took us to the city’s medical center, which was so far from the actual city ruins that they could hardly even be seen from afar. In spite of not having time to fulfill its obligations to complete the itinerary emailed to us, Neon tours apparently found time to take us to an expensive leather shop for a silly fashion show and to allow us to browse their expensive leather products (Thousands of dollars for a coat!)
Secondly, once you pay your money, it seems the tour company no longer feels obligated to help or support its customers. The COMPANY WAS INACCESIBLE to us throughout the trip. When we arrived our first day there was no one to orient us at the hotel, and no posted itinerary for the next day. The hotel staff told us they didn’t know anything about the company, but that we were free to call them from the room at our own expense. When we asked to speak with the company about the change of itinerary at Pergamon , the guide told us that the company refused to speak with us, and he would not put us on the phone with them. The guide, Onur Yurtbasi, was unhelpful throughout, and often rude/ condescending. For example, his refusal to provide helpful or accurate information about how to get to the nearby city for dinner one night placed us in a dangerous situation waiting at the side of the road for a bus that he later admitted often didn’t come. When my travel partner asked for dining experiences outside the gas stations, he told her that she wasn’t going to find any hamburgers- how rude! He definitely did not go above and beyond in any way. Although Onur was incredibly knowledgeable about the historical sites we visited, his commitment to his customers and his people skills were sorely lacking.
If you’re looking for an amazing place to vacation, choose Turkey with it’s beautiful landscapes and rich history. If you’re looking for an amazing experience while in Turkey- stay away from Key/Neon tours at all costs!!

“KEY TOURS/NEON TOURS: Disappointing, False Advertising”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 October 2012

DISAPPOINTING!! Key Tours/Neon Tours is NOT worth the money, whatever deal you get from them. Here’s the thing, Turkey is a truly phenomenal country and a definite must see. However, I highly recommend NOT seeing it with this tour company. Pay the extra money and go with a Rick Steves tour, or probably ANY other tour. Or do it yourself. Although there were a few good points about the tour, they were far outweighed by the negative ones. My friend and I (both in our mid 30s and frequent international travelers) found ourselves constantly disappointed and frustrated throughout the trip.
Most importantly, there was FALSE ADVERTISING. They advertised a price for the tour then after we paid they charged us extra money for our flight. Additionally, on the itinerary they listed that we would see the ruins of Pergamum (tour books say they are the most breathtaking ruins in all of Turkey), when in actuality we did not see the city of Pergamum ruins, but only the ancient medical center which was completely separate from the city and all the way at the bottom of the hill. That is false advertising! And to boot, they did not allow us to see the actual city of Pergamum, even when we volunteered to pay our own way, skip lunch, and find our own way up there.
The first night we got to the Istanbul hotel there was no information left at the front desk or posted that told us any information. Consequently, we missed the first informational meeting. Additionally, all the hotels were situated far away from the towns, making the towns not easily accessible in the evenings.
Our tour guide, Onur Yurtbasi, was knowledgeable, however he was generally unhelpful and at times even pretty RUDE. He did not help us at all get into town on our free time. He sometimes provided us with INCORRECT OR INCOMPLETE INFORMATION that kept us from doing desired activities during our free time. He never went above and beyond to help us and sometimes withheld information which led to inconvenient and unsafe situations (e.g. We waited in the dark on the side of the road for a bus that was never going to come).
The tour also says that breakfasts and dinners are included, which sounds great at first. However, what they don’t tell you is that you will be eating all your lunches at rest stop/gas stations (gross) and all your dinners at the hotels you stay at, even when town are accessible to stop in. The food is very unappetizing, making the culinary experience ANYTHING BUT AUTHENTIC. And when I asked our tour guide, Onur, if we could eat lunches at restaurants in the towns and not in gas stations, he actually had the gall to tell me that there were no restaurants in the towns and that townspeople only eat in their homes. Really? Please!
Key Tours and their Turkey component, Neon Tours, were INACCESSIBLE to us the entire trip, even when we tried to contact them to discuss matters we were having difficulty with. This is not a company you want to travel with. I wish I would have spent more money to go on a better tour than this one. I advise you to do the same.

“Don't Recommend very boring trip”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2012

I took this trip recently in March now and I do not recommend it, it was very boring. Most of the tour is driving in the bus and while in the bus we could not relax at all as Aydin the tour guide kept talking nonstop about politics and religion, not that it related to the tour all the time and it seemed as if he wanted to brainwash us. When we got off at the sightseeing, he talked and talked leaving no time for picture taking and relaxation, he would always say don't take pictures now do it at the end and if you did not take the pictures and walked by yourself there was no time at the end as he never revealed at what time you had to meet in the bus until the end and everything was done too fast. We got to the hotels very late in the afternoon for diner time with no time to visit the city and the tour guide never provided any current interesting information about the cities only about history, religion and politics. Be prepared about the imposing tip advise from the tour guide, almost an obligation and I am talking about that they expect hundreds of dollars for the bus driver, guide and luggage handling, which by the way this last one is supposedly already included in the price of the tour. What is most annoying is how pushy the tour guide was, for example, they wasted a lot of time taking you to the factories for shopping and I mean very expensive factories only because there is a commission for them involved. If you are the independent type of traveler that wants to get the most out of your trip getting to know the people, enjoying its culture and exploring on your own, this is not the type if trip for your. They cover too many cities and also not so interesting places that can be avoided and it is all too fast. The distances between cities are from 4 to 5 hours as the bus moves very slow except for the last day when going back to Istanbul. Hope this is helpful for you.

“Very Good Tour Operator”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

I signed up a classic Turkey tour with Neon, and I had a great time. Our tour guide Mena and driver Yusef have provided us a very good service. Mena took care every tour members’ different needs and requests, and Yusef has accommodated all our needs. These two are part of the highlight of this tour to Turkey. The itinerary was nicely packaged, we get to cover many attractions, I would use this tour operator again if I am doing another group tour.
