The new Guray Underground Ceramic Museum is due to open July 2014, but when we visited in April, we were able to get a "sneak preview" and were told that other visitors will be able to do the same. It's a must see! The museum has been beautifully carved out of stone and features a fabulous exhibit of ceramics from many periods, stunningly displayed in carved out niches. The niches alone are works of art, as you can see the different layers of stone in the walls of the niches. The owner plans to use the museum for art displays and other events; we could see the set-up for a bar/restaurant? in the works. The museum is clearly a work of love and an incomparable gift to future generations.
In addition to the museum, the Ceramics "shop" allows you to see first hand the manufacturing process for their exquisite products. It's possible to buy museum quality pieces as well as more "ordinary" items that you could use in an everyday way (bowls, dishes, etc.) The quality is fantastic and discounts are offered to tour groups. Check out their website at www.gurayseramik.com.tr

We visited Guray Seramik while in Cappadocia on holiday in August 2013. As with many of this "holiday stop offs" this is an opportunity for the manufacturer to tell you about their manufacturing process and then try and sell you something.

At Guray Seramik I didn't feel at all under pressure to buy. The explanations about the process and the demonstrations were good. The guy showing us around was knowlegeable and pointed out the difference between what was "standard" and therefore could be found elsewhere and what was bespoke or unique to Guray Seramik who have operated since the mid 19th century and have a particular circular patten which they believe is unique to them.

In the end I did buy a wonderful circular wine decanter which was designed for servants to wear on their arms so they would bow when serving (wonder if I can get my children to do this back at home - unlikely!). I did see cheaper versions of this in the town of Avanos but they were smaller and didn't function (ie they were solid inside and only therefore for display). I don't want to buy anything I can't use! So I purchased this for around £200 GBP. We did manage to get a fair discount over and above the "standard 30%" they said they offered initially and taking it with us on the day did also save money (vs the delivered version). The decanter was very well wrapped and made it home in one piece!

They are also creating a cave exhibition below the factory and it will look stunning when done!

We loved Guray Seramik and Cappadocia generally. Impossible to get this all into one review s we out our full experiences online at http://my-family-adventure-holiday-reviews.com/turkey/ (note this is not a commercial site, the ads there are purely to pay for the domain) or you can see my other reviews on trip advisor.
