The Altinyazi is a large modern hotel arranged in multiple stories around a central atrium. It caters to bus tour groups -- there were at least five when we were there.

It is located in the town of Avanos, several miles north of Goreme and its famous open air museum of cave dwellings and cave chapels. There is an hourly bus in each direction between the towns for 2-3 TL (less than 2 USD) each way. The bus stop is several blocks north of the hotel (or several blocks east, since the bus leaves the main road and travels through a residential district behind the hotel). Buses leave Avanos southbound on the hour and Goreme northbound on the half hour (re-check the schedule when you are there).

The Altinyazi hotel rooms are comfortable and the breakfast buffet is pleasant. The one major fault is that the staff seems fed up with tour groups and was the least friendly and least helpful we found on our entire Turkey vacation. For that they deserve no better than an average rating.

The town has a supermarket with snacks and drinks just a few blocks northeast of the hotel.

Although balloon trips are popular in nearby Goreme, there are more than 50 balloons going aloft every dawn, some with baskets carrying 20 people. After the recent balloon tragedy in Egypt, it pays to research the safety regulations of any balloon company.

Consider a half day trekking on your own through the wonderful rock formations and cave dwellings around Goreme. Trails are well maintained and many trailheads have markers with satellite maps.

Start on the road going from central Goreme to the open air museum, and detour south a mile or two on the Zemi Valley trail. Then continue back on the main road above the open air museum to the Sword Valley trail. It is a slot canyon with a few chutes and ladders, but none too difficult (I am a senior and had no problem). From the north end of the Sword Valley continue north to the Rose and Red Valleys, ending in the town of Cavusin, where one can catch a bus back to Goreme (south) or Avanos (north). The views along the trails are incredible, and you will have none of the crowds that over-run the area in high season.

Room tip: North rooms face the town, south rooms face the valley with balloon flights in the distance.

A very pleasant hotel in Avanos centrally located for visiting Cappadocia.

Stayed here for two nights whilst on a Cosmos tour and were lucky to be given a room with a view - we managed to count over 80 balloons flying over the area as dawn broke both mornings.

The beds in our room were a little firm but didn't affect the ability to sleep after long days of sightseeing. Meals were very good too.

Lovely clean and pleasant hotel with charming staff, good food, good service. Very comfortable and good value. Had a wonderful time in Cappadocia. There was a small supermarket just down the road to be able to top up on travel supplies.
