“Great Budget Cave Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2009

I have just spent 3 nights at the Elif Star Hotel and this is a great hotel. The rooms are authentic Cave Rooms and they are great. The staff were great and we were looked after very very well. Breakfast was good and I would recommend the French Toast. We were given lots of information about Goreme and what we could do.

I would reccomend this hotel to anyone who is coming to Goreme.

I had emailed a number of cave hotels inquiring about reservations and based on price landed in Elif Star. We were not disappointed in anything. It is a very relaxed
atmosphere, with lots of good information available, and no hard sell of trips and tours.

We ended up staying there 6 nights and were totally satisfied.

The beds were very comfortable, the hot water plentiful, and rooms spacious. The breakfast was fantastic! The view across the valley just lovely, and location at the end of town is incredibly quiet, (but still easy walking distance to the centre) so perfect. Rahme is the most sweet guy who made our breakfast and just couldn't do enough for us. Mustafa the owner was really helpful in providing information and connecting us with day trip info.

A very good value for the money, we would recommend to anyone, and stay there again.
No complaints whatsoever.

we recently stayed there and had our pick of the rooms because we went in the winter time. The owner, Mustafa, let us leave our bags in our room without charging us because we were taking an overnight bus and because there was no one else staying in the hotel when we were there. The rooms were great and breakfast was amazing.

some time has passed since our visit now, yet i would still like to post a review :)

About the hotel - the hotel is quite basic, yet it was nice enough for us. We were given a 4-bed room, no balcony. We liked that the room was big, the bathroom was clean upon our arrival, bed was very comfortable and Ali - reception person - very pleasant. We appreciated that it was not in the very center so not much noise coming in. The breakfast - though not too large a choice - was good and tasty. My bf was disappointed that there was no TV in the room, so he was going downstairs to reception to watch TV :) but of course it is not TV-watching that you come for to Goreme. For the price i paid i was absolutely satisfied with the room i got and the place as such. So if you do not look for a "doorstep-to-doorstep" transfer service and reception who reads wishes from your eyes but just a nice place to stay - do consider Elif Star Hotel.

I would also like to make some comments regarding some previous comments.

Cleaning - true, that the rooms are not cleaned every day. It is stated in the "hotel rules" in the room, and it is also stated that if you need some cleaning, you may ask for it. we did not need one, so i cannot comment how willingly they do additional cleaning. yet we found on our window sill new roll of toilet paper after a couple of days as well as a candle and, if i am not mistaken, also a bar of soap.

Owner - we did not meet the owner Mustafa much, but the first impression was not too bad - we had a small chat and all seemed fine. Yet we also did not arrange any tours or additional services with their help, so there was no room for disappointment in the first place :)

One last note - what we did lack was some kind of curtain in the shower or something of this kind. Because the shower is together with the toilet and not separated in any way so when someone showers, all is wet afterwards and it is not possible to get all the water away instantly. but that is the only minus.

so all in all, as said before - if you do not need much of extra service but just a nice place to stay - this suits perfectly!

  • Liked — the place as such
  • Disliked — no curtain in the shower

My third visit to the beautifully captivating Goreme and yet another fabulous place to stay.
Transport to and from the local airport was kindly arranged by Mustafa the owner of this charming hotel maximising my time spent here.
This fantastic small hotel is staffed by polite, friendly and extremely knowledgeable people who couldn't do enough to make my time in Goreme as enjoyable as possible. Always ready to recommend a good walking route / restaurant or possible activities. It offrered me the best night's sleep I've had in ages in my very own fairytale cave room followed by a delcious breakfast which awaited me to fuel a day of exploring every morning.
What more could any woman dream of. apart from a longer stay naturally. Pure pampering for the spirit.

Stayed at Elif Star in Oct 2008. Having travelled 4 weeks around Turkey I can clearly state that this was the most inviting, warm and friendly place I have stayed in. The service provided by Ali and Rahme were beyond my expectations. The breakfasts are ADDICTIVE thanks to Rahme!!! It felt just like a slice of home in a foreign place. The rooms are comfortable, modern and the bathrooms spotless. Great location. Thank you for a memorable experience!

No longer as advertised really sums up our experience at the Elif Star in Goreme. We had read all sorts of wonderful reviews about the hotel on Trip Advisor, but our disappointment with the hotel began as soon as we arrived in Goreme on the overnight bus from Anatalya.

We had arranged by email to be picked up at the otogar. Mustafa, the owner of the Elif Star, had told us there would be someone in the tourism office at the otogar who would phone him to come and get us. We arrived at 7:00 a.m. The tourism office was closed! Fortunately, one of the bus offices was open so I went there to ask them to call, saying Mustafa had said he would come and pick us up. His answer was "If he is awake!". He kindly phoned (we found the Turks everywhere on our 5 1/2 week visit to their country extremely helpful) but there was no answer.

My husband and I are retired so the thought of walking to the hotel dragging our luggage was a bit daunting to say the least, but two young Australians on the bus who were going to the same hotel offered to help us. It was about a six block walk and it was really, really cold.. Ali, who is the main staff person, was up when we arrived but when we inquired about Mustafa, we were told he was "sleeping". Ali offered us tea immediately and then breakfast which we appreciated.

Mustafa finally showed up about 9:30. And that was practically the last we saw of him (except one evening when we came in from dinner and he was playing backgammon on the computer and gave us a cursory greeting) until we left 5 days later and he was there so we could pay our bill.

The next surprise (shock?) was that the Elif Star was no longer serving evening meals. That was one of the chief reasons we had chosen them. Mustafa's wife, Jackie, is British and is a trained chef and there were rave reviews about her cooking. But, she has returned to Britain with their daughter for good (Mustafa actually told us they were divorced), and it is our impression that she was the person who made the Elif Star the place it was.

Mustafa recommended two restaurants where we could eat, but when we did a "walk about" in the town later in the day we found several other places that seemed more reasonable, and none of them disappointed us. The A la Turque was particularly delightful.

Next disappointment. We had been told by other travellers we had met to book a "green tour" when we got to Goreme. There was a poster advertising green tours in the eating area, so we asked about it. Mustafa told us that it was no longer available, but Hard Rock tours did a similar thing. So, we booked with Hard Rock.

We later found out that Hard Rock Tours was run by Mustafa's cousin (!). The tour started an hour late and so we missed two of the stops on the itinerary. I went on line to book our next tour (with Rock Valley Travel) and it was excellent. More about that in the Goreme forum. When we spoke to the very pleasant woman at Rock Valley Travel and mentioned our experience at the Elif Star with Mustafa she said she had heard that from quite a number of people.

Finally, I had asked in my email about transport to the airport for our return to Istanbul. and Mustafa had said he would arrange it. After three days of not seeing him, and the staff saying they didn't know where he was, I contacted Rock Valley again and "no problem".

Smaller concerns were that there is no service in the rooms once you have arrived and after several days, we could have used a bit of clean up. And, the Elif Star is one of those hotels where you can't flush paper down the toilet, and we had to ask to have the waste basket emptied.

All that said, the cave room we were in (with a balcony) was very nice, and the two staff who do the breakfasts are very kind and as helpful as they can be. But, we had been stayed in Izmir at the Antique Han, Selcuk at the Hotel Bella, Kas at Hideaway Hotel and Antalya at the Villa Tulapin before we arrived in Goreme, and the degree of kindness and helpfulness we had received in each place was outstanding. They all made us feel like very welcome guests in their country.

It was truly disappointing to find such a difference in Goreme. There are many lovely cave hotels in Goreme and if we return, which we hope to do, we would certainly stay somewhere else.
