“So so”
Reviewed 7 August 2013

We have spent 4 nights in Gumus Hotel. The location is nice, not far from the city centre, at the beginning of the Pigeon Valley. The hotel is made of different rooms dug in the rock, the breakfast is good too, the owner is helpful. Unfortunately the "family room" (maybe the other rooms are better, I don't know) and its bathroom in particular were very dirty, we had to buy some detergent to clean it. The door of the bathroom hardly closed. Finally the owner said us we had a kitchen available, but when we arrived he specified that we could use it only for one evening (at the end he allowed us to use it for a second time).

The host, Mr. Yuksel, is the most interesting part! He is kind and nice, and gives good deals. He can find you good balloon deals too, and good airport service. The rooms are rustic, clean, and they feel like actual caves. The breakfast is modest but local and tasty. Very pleasant stay; I will certainly go back.

Room Tip: Real cave rooms, dug by the host!

We stayed at the Gumus Hotel only one night (but two full days) and had a lovely time in Goreme. The room was lovely and cave-ish and the owner was very helpful in recommending places to go and booking cheaper deals for us. He was also very freindly and chatty and the breakfast was beautful and enjoyed outside under the trees.

Goreme is a tiny place, so even though Gumus is a little outside of the centre, it is easy walking distance to the shops, restaunts, hammams and many of the capadocia features.

The only one (very) small negative was that the cave room ceiling was crumbly and so there could be dust on the bed. This could put off visitors with asthma, especially as Goreme is already a very dry, dusty area.

So, this is the only Cave hotel I've ever stayed in, so I can't compare it to anything else and speak to its value as compared to other places. But as a hotel, I did not enjoy it. Here's why:
-- We booked a double, but we got a triple. Besides the beds, there was pretty much no room for anything else in the room. It was quite small. It wasn't decorated in any way, except a faded calendar poster from 2006. It was really just a room with three beds and pretty much nothing else. No furnishings at all. Only one electrical outlet.
-- The wall separating the bathroom and the rest of the room doesn't go all the way to the ceiling. There's about two feet of opening and sound travels quite well. The shower head was broken. There was no hot water tap for the sink. There was no place to put down your razor, etc. And it smelled a bit like sewer and because of the opening, so did the rest of the room a little bit.
-- The wifi didn't work in the room. When I asked the owner to fix it, he said "It's impossible."
-- The breakfast was as basic as possible. A few small pieces of fruit, butter and jam packets, bread, coffee or tea.
-- They didn't make up the room until we asked. When I asked, he said to find "the girl" and give her the key.
-- They will try to get you to book tours through them with a little scheme. They give you a bunch of brochures for expensive balloon rides and he tells you he can get you a deal. We booked through him but we later found out that the tour operator charges the same price if you go to their office directly. He doesn't save you any money.

For 45 euros, I don't know if this was good value or not. And maybe the things I listed above wouldn't bother you as much as it bothered me. But I was disappointed because the website certainly makes it look better than it actually is.

We arrived 4 days ago and this was our first trip to Goreme. We immediately felt welcomed by the staff as we arrived ın the late evening. When shown our room it was more than I could dream of by way of romantic. The lighting were 4 candles (upgraded to electric - complete with bedside dimmer switches). Our cave room was cozy, clean and charming. Handmade Authentic Turkish rugs hung on the walls and some strewn neatly on the floors. We had a vıew of glimmerimg lights from the area whıch added to the ambiance. İt really was quiet as its a little ways from the busy tourists areas. Our bed was formed from stone and sported a comfortable mattress which if you ever slept on a yatuk made in some villages, thıs is a very welcomed asset! Our bed was adorned with fresh towels neatly pressed and presented as fans. The bathroom was small and functional and the only thing İ had a hard time with was adjusting the water temperature to meet my satisfactıon. *After a good hike around the valley, İ preferred more of a cooler temperature whereas, my husband prefers much warmer. One very good thing was the free wı-fı and our connection was very good; never had a problem. There was a small flat screen tele which the reception was good.

They serve you kavalta (breakfast), which is standard Turkish fare and more than enough. What İ loved best was the garden where we ate! So many fruit trees and roses. The rustic
handmade tables and chairs were adorned wıth traditıonal Turkısh fabrics which enhanced the romantic feeling. İn the morning hours we met so many new friends from all over the world! Stories , travel tips, and emails were exchanged with hopes to meet again in our lives.

The owner has lived here all his life and the history of how this Gümüş Cave Hotel came to be is interesting. He has a cat named Kave' (I am not sure how to spell this) and she is friendly -- definately part of the staff! Check out his pet (yet wild) doves that hang out on this property. Even they look to be in love!

There is a small reception or bar room but most of the guests stayed outside in the garden. My guess is this is used during the snowy months.

The pricing of this hotel was very reasonable. We will be coming back here for sure!

Room Tip: All of the rooms here can accomodate a solo person, couples and families. I was able to see a few o...
