“Divan House with a caveat”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

We stayed at Divan Cave House from July 30-August 02, 2014. We arrived at the bus station at about 1:30 PM and the hotel send us a car to pick us up within 5 minutes of calling them That was a real nice touch as the walk to the hotel is about 1 Km but it is uphill.
On arrival at reception we were told that we had a room with twin beds. We requested a double bed but told rather brashly that since we had booked the cheapest room, we cannot make any changes. During check-in we were twice reminded that we had booked the cheapest room as if we had committed a crime. We felt embarrassed by this reminder.
The cave room was fine but it had smell of sewage seeping in. We were told to turn our AC on and the smell will go away. It did get a little better but the smell lingered. The TV in the room did not work and nobody came to check it even though we asked Mr. Ali twice. He said he was busy and he forgot. The next day we were offered a different room for a higher price. It involved climbing several steps, so we declined due to my bad knee.
Overall our stay was OK. If staying here please do not book the cheapest room.

Room Tip: Do not choose the cheapest room rate at this hotel.

Divan was definitely the best place I stayed during my Turkey trip.
Everything about this hotel was briliant, the staff, the rooms, the location, turkish breakfast and free rose valley tour( you should not miss)
We very enjoyed the every
moment of our stay!

If you go to Goreme Divan is definitely a Must stay' property.

We stayed room 345(was very clean and comfortable)

Beautiful place with really nice service.. food is awesomely nice... and the owner, Hanife was really gracious to offer us another room when there was construction next to our previous room. Ali always played with our daughter and even gave her a small doll.. We are really thankful and we loved it. Other than the washroom could be cleaner.. but staying in a "cave room" is kinda a novelty.. :)

The redeeming quality of the hotel is the staff. They are overworked, but very helpful. We had a nice room in the back of the hotel. It was quiet and the size was fine. The hotel was not clean, specifically the bathroom. By this I mean that the tub was yellowed, and sink was clogged. We stayed in two different rooms over five days, and the experience was repeated. We were in Turkey for several weeks, and this was our only experience with this low level of cleanliness.

Otherwise, the hotel is fine. It is good value at 50 euro per night. It is possible to sleep in a fairy chimney room, which we did. It is ten minute walk uphill from the city centre, but this makes for a quick walk to the sunset hill, and to several hiking trails. Likewise, it is next to the Seten Restaurant, which is an excellent restaurant and beautiful hotel. (10% discount as a Divan guest.)

Another upside is that the Divan has a relationship with the Hitchhiker rental shop so there are savings on car rentals.

Cave hotels are the rage in Cappadocia, and this one is probably a good one.
Its good points are:
unusual settings (room simulating a cave cut into the soft rock: not the same as authentic "fairy chimney" rooms, but hard to spot the difference), very nice room decor, good breakfast, friendly stuff, and of course Cappadocia itself.
Its less good points, probably shared by most cave hotels are:
* Poor aeration. Our first room had no windows and no exhaust fan in the bathroom (or an insufficient one) and had a strong moldy smell. My wife is allergic to mold, so we ask for a change. (We had booked a room with a window but their reservation system crashed and so we got one without windows. I had hoped for A/C which is standard in in Turkish hotels at that price level, but in fact the description did not promise one). The second room was actually a suite (which we got at the me price) and one of the rooms (although not the bedroom) had windows. This helped a lot, but the bathroom still had not enough exhaust and so was a bit too humid.
* Multiple steps in the room add a lot of "character" but are actually a hassle when you are tired or not paying enough attention.
* Our GPS could not bring us to the hotel, road signs were poor (e.g. a fork in the road with the name of the hotel but not arrow to indicate where to go). I had to walk up and down a maze of narrow streets keep asking directions every 50 steps (very hard to communicate) and eventually got by foot to the hotel and a guy there took me back to the car on his bike and then guided me back. Nice adventure, but a good map on their site would have helped.
* We had poor wi-fi in our room-I had to sit in the (small) hall to use my computer. Not surprising, given the thickness of the walls.
I suspect these drawbacks are common among cave hotels in the area and if you really want to have the experience of sleeping in a comfy cave you may have to accept them. I am not sure myself that they are worse it though...

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with windows and/or AC

We stayed at the Divan Cave House for three nights in July. Outside it was steaming but the room was totally comfortable. Breakfast was included (and delicious).

The hotel is located at the top of the hill, which means the views are breathtaking, but it's about a five-minute walk downhill to get to town and a ten-minute walk uphill to get back. The Goreme Open-Air Museum was maybe another fifteen-minute walk from the town center. We did it in the July heat with small kids, so it doesn't seem like a big deal to us, but if you have mobility issues this may not be a good choice.

The most important thing for us was how kind and helpful the staff was. For example, one of our suitcases started to come apart and somebody actually sewed it back up for us!

Room Tip: You may want to ask for a room away from the main entrance, as people tend to come in and out early...

Divan Cave House is a decent value “cave hotel”. It’s not great, but it’s alright enough to stay for a few days. Any more than that and you might want a more comfortable place.

The location isn’t the most convenient – it’s about a 15 mins uphill walk from Göreme proper. There are signs for it all over the hill so you shouldn’t have trouble finding it. You’ll have to head down into the main town for some transportation and supplies.

The front desk office is a bit small, but the staff offers a free walking tour and can book other, color-coded Cappadocia tours as well through Nomad Travel (I did the Blue tour with them, and it was fun). They can drop you off at the Open Air Museum for free. The staff seemed knowledgeable and friendly, and handled check-in well. I reserved a balloon tour, but there was an unexpected problem with that company, so the hotel helped reschedule me onto another company’s tour; this was very convenient. Within the compound there are a few outdoors places to sit down and relax, but towards the southern end there was occasionally an unpleasant odor in the daytime. There’s not an elevator to be seen for miles.

I was in a triple room, which had an adequate amount of space and was cool. There was a kind of musty smell in the room, which fortunately you no longer really notice after a little bit. I suspect that this smell is present at all of these cave hotels in the area. The beds were small and not the greatest. The room appeared fairly clean, and had really basic furnishings, including a small fridge. The free Wifi was good throughout the hotel. Some things I didn’t like were that the room seemed a bit dark, even with all lights on, and a couple of the lamps didn’t work at all. There aren’t many wall outlets. Housekeeping appeared OK. There really wasn’t too much noticeable pesky outside noise. Carrying the big room key around when you left got old quick.

The bathroom is spacious and comfortable enough despite being somewhat basic. Unfortunately, one night the water service was unexpectedly disrupted. I wish the hotel offered some bottled water at least so guests could still wash, but the only thing I got was a notice and an apology.

The free Turkish breakfast on the top terrace provided quality, varied, tasty eats, with good service to boot. In the evening the eating area is not really “open”, but you can ask for Efes beer and some wine to chill outside with.

Check-out was not a problem, and they stored my bags for a while when I went to get one last valley hike in. They also arranged a convenient shared dolmus to small Nevşehir airport (about an hour away).

Not the most comfortable place, but it’s a good enough value for a short stay.
