“Unique rooms, fascinating surroundings”
Reviewed 22 April 2011

We chose this hotel based on Trip Advisor reviews and are glad we did. The hotel has unique rooms built in the fairy chimneys or the caves - no other place we stayed had as much character as this place.

The walk into town is simple and safe. We enjoyed walking to the Goreme Open Air Museum, as well as just wandering around town.

The staff is very kind and helpful. We worked with them to organize a hot air balloon ride for our wedding anniversary, as well as a hike in a different area of Cappadocia. The hamam was a wonderful treat and we appreciated the staff fitting us in during our short visit. We left super clean and feeling relaxed. The outdoor breakfast was a treat in the morning as we were surrounded by the beauty of the natural landscape and the hot air balloons. On the day we left, we were going to miss breakfast and the staff packed up sandwiches for us so that we would not be hungry upon waiting at the airport.

I stayed at the Kelebek Hotel with a friend in early April. We took one of the junior suites at a slightly higher price, since the regular rooms were not available. I would recommended that anyone staying here take the lower cost rooms, since will you get the same services that really makes the stay at this hotel worth while. Most of the time you will be out exploring the environs, whether it be a the local historic sites, museums, or hikes. The hotel is convenient to the town - certainly walkable -- and public transportation can be easily access, though they'll arrange private transportation for you, if necessary.

The hotel offers a lot to its guests, including a fabulous Turkish breakfast with homemade breads, jams, and spreads. You probably won't find a breakfast like it at any other hotel that you stay in, so make sure to take advantage. The hotel has a nice area for guests who come in and out throughout the day and you can socialize with your fellow travelers while sitting by the fireplace and enjoying a glass of wine, or complimentary cay (tea) or coffee. They also have travel services connected to the hotel, so we arranged a fantastic tour with their hotel and many other guests went through them for tours or their hamam (Turkish bath). These services are generally higher priced than if you did the sights yourself, but many come with lunch at a nice restaurant or some other benefit. You should figure out what you can do on your own and book tours for the things where you'd like an educated guide or that are difficult to access.

The room was well kept and clean with plenty of linens and toiletries. The rooms come with central air which is a luxury in Turkey, so it will be heated or cooled to your comfort. We stayed at a chilly time, so the in room fire place and heated towel bars came were an added plus though weren't entirely necessary. Would recommended that you book rooms that are further away from the main hotel area, since there's a lot of traffic and sometimes noise.

Hotel staff were friendly and accommodating at every moment. Though we could not push back our check out time, they were happy to have the hotel be our home base and treated us the same as any guest when we spent the afternoon there.

Room Tip: book early, pay in cash and request a discount.

I stayed here with two male friends for two nights in April 2011 in the triple room for 80 euro a night. The hotel is located on a hill up from the main street of Goreme. Parking is possible anywhere on the street on three different sides of the hotel, but it can be a touch difficult to navigate the narrow streets. Follow the small sign from the main road to find your way up. The triple room contains three twin beds and is an average size - not cramped but not spacious; fairly spartan, containing only the beds and a couple nightstand tables. It was very clean. Room service fixed up the room while we were out. The free WiFi didn't reach the room but was available in the reception area. The bathroom was average and the shower had a door. The beds and sheets were nice but not luxurious. We slept well, although the Calls to Prayer were very clear. Good temperature in the room. There is a beautiful terrace upstairs, with both an outdoor and indoor section. There are two computers available for use (free) with connection to the internet. The bar is well stoked and reasonably priced. The buffet breakfast was without doubt the best we had during our 10 day trip - huge, well stocked, with both Turkish items and more standard cereal+milk. As others have noted, the view from the terrace is excellent from all sides of the hotel - you can see Goreme and the surrounding hills and valleys. The staff was very nice and helpful.

We booked a session in the downstairs Hamam for 50 euro each, which included 15 minutes in the dry sauna, a Turkish soap scrub and soap massage for 30 minutes, a more standard oil massage for another 30 minutes, and a mud-or-something face mask for 10 minutes. The Hamam was beautiful, very relaxing, very clean, and well staffed. They easily accommodated all three of us at the same time and were skilled in massage. Highly recommended.

Just FYI, despite Lonely Planet's recommendation of Setan, the next-door restaurant, we found it overpriced for what was a very average dinner. Not bad, but not worth the money.

Amenities: free WiFi and computers in the reception area, great breakfast included, free parking, nice bar, swimming pool, excellent Hamam, great staff that speaks English

Pros:
-great location and terrace
-beautiful views
-excellent breakfast
-helpful staff with great English
-very nice Hamam, highly recommended
-well stocked bar

Cons:
-fairly Spartan room but they have nicer ones if you are willing to pay for them
-WiFi did not reach our room

Absolutely lovely place - in all aspects: location, surroundings, style, staff, athmosphere, comfort, entertainment offers, you name it...
In any hotel you stay you KNOW you are a guest. In good hotels you can FEEL you are a guest. But in Kelebek you feel like AT HOME, or at least like staying at your best freind's.
Very cheerful and helpful staff are very sincere in their attemps to comfort you with anything you may need during your stay in the Hotel. In Kelebek they treat you like a good friend, not a mere tourist.
It's definitely the right place to stay in, if you are looking for original genuine turkish countryside. Rooms are all diffrent. You can chose the best one for yourself from the Kelebek's website and there will definitely be no disappintment when you step into.
Due to it's unique building plan and historical style decoration, Kelebek gives you plenty of amusing surprises when you walk through its' corridors, halls and outside areas.
Restaurant - not too big, but never overcrowded, with simple but delicious local quiseene and nice views out of the windows and terrace - at a quite reasonable prce. We loved local wine!
The hotel's related HERITAGE Travel agency offers you all the variety of tours available in Goreme, including the most exciting - Hot Ari Ballon flights. The unique is that, being mostly orientated for the guests of Kelebek, they give normaly very small tour groups, which gives you a feeling of privacy. For instance, we did one tour with 4 guests, and another - with 10 people, excluding the guide. Our guide was cheerful, knowlegeabe about the history of the place, and having very good command of English and a good sence of humour.
To summarise: all the reviews given in respect of Kelebek in this website are true. You will not be disappointed staying in this Hotel. During 3 days in Kelebek we met several copules who were staying there for the second time. And there were also a lot people who have chosen Kelebek upon advice of their freinds' who visited before.
We definitely recommend.

Kelebek was great. We got a room with a fireplace which was really nice - they have unlimited firewood. Service is excellent - they helped us with tours, dinner, and balloon rides. Tea was offered frequently for free. Breakfast was great. Tours are wonderful. Location was great - you can walk to hikes and restaurants. Spa was great - only problem was a male employee hung around a little too much during our wives' massage. Overall excellent.

Amazing views of Coppadocia.

Only downside of this hotel is that there is no Internet access in rooms. The rooms are made inside of caves but if there is electricity, surely there can be the WWW.
The reception area is nice & cosy with the house dog falling asleep at your feet.

We stage in two different rooms for the two nights we were there and they were quite different in size. Personally I loved the smaller room as it was cosy and very toasty warm which is what I needed coming in from the evening chill.

The breakfast was quite nice and starts at 8am till 11am.

The staff are lovely and always willing to help. They stored our luggage for us for several hours after we had checked out which was very handy.
The chef even cut me my pomegranate and served it to me even though I only asked him for a knife so I could do it myself. That's what you call service!!!

It's in a good location but getting around Coppadocia is a little difficult. You will either have to hire a taxi or do what we did, pay for two day tours which show you all the sights, collect/drop qt hotel and include lunch. We couldn't have seen all the sights if hadn't been for the tours we booked. We also did the balloon ride which was nice but a little over hyped we thought. We enjoyed the tours a lot more. Would recommend the the balloon ride as it is a once in a lifetime thing (unless your at regular at Coppadocia).
The tours all come with an English guide and both the red tour and green tour will cover about 10 sights which is pretty good I say.

The town is quite safe with a population of approximately 2000. Everyone knows one another.

We also received a 20% discount as we paid in cash and this hotel is very efficient in that they give you the option to pay in TL, dollars, pounds or euros and do the conversions for you whilst offering a good rate.

Enjoy!

The hotel's website promotes itself as a "special cave hotel"....that's SO true and what I like about their site is the ability to choose your room, know the exact rate and see what's included.

We chose Suite 103 and were not disappointed.
Apart from two new armchairs replacing the original lounge, it was exactly as pictured online.
Our rooms were carved out of limestone and it is typical of the region.

Some very minor points, unfortunately during our stay as the hotel was refurbishing the rooms, most of the furniture and sundries were right outside our door and only a small passage left to get into our room.
By the end of the stay several bed heads were leaning on our only view to the garden and hills.
Although the bathroom was modern it had a quirky tap system in the shower.
This apparently is standard in Turkey but we found it difficult to begin with.
The bed was a little hard for our tastes and the cover was too small for the size of the bed. One or the other would wake up with no cover. Due to the nature of the furniture (and too much luggage) hanging space was limited so the sitting room came in handy.

These aside, our suite consisted of three rooms, two done very artistically in Turkish theme and a lovely bathroom with shower only,no bath.
The furniture was delightful and although cold, we did not light the fire in the sitting room.
Central heating was more than enough and very snug for temps in the minuses overnight

As each room at this hotel has unique features and facilities, you don't get everything. Ours didn’t have a TV but we knew that from the online description.
There is no time anyway as we spent most evenings in the guests lounge near reception or eating dinner in the village of Goreme.
There is a computer for guests but we used our own laptop and picked up Wi Fi there.
We were too busy during the day walking in the valleys or doing a tour to be in the room.

The whole hotel is a maze of corridors and stairs eventually leading to one of two breakfast areas. In the high season, our suite would eat in another part but breakfast and dinner were in the reception area.
It consisted of local produce and more on the continental side with boiled eggs or they would cook an egg if you asked.
Nothing was too much trouble for guests.
There were plenty of dried fruits, cereals, great breads and yummy jams, cold sliced meats and vegetables. We switched constantly from coffee, Turkish tea and hot chocolate each morning and they were happy to accommodate.

They do focus on getting you signed up for tours at check in, particularly ballooning.
It is rated highly in these valleys and guests rave about the flights. However, not everyone likes the thought of being flown up thousands of feet if you have a fear of heights. They did get my point eventually. The tour we took through Heritage Travel (in the hotel complex) to the Underground Cities (I could manage that!!) was conducted exceptionally well and there was a great lunch at a riverside restaurant.
We chose transfers from/to Kayseri Airport through this company.
The arrival transfer was great but the return transfer was another matter.
It was very unsatisfactory but after some communication with them the matter was resolved and dealt with very professionally.
Be sure to find out what kind of transfer you will have.

The biggest plus for us besides the gorgeous rooms, is the staff!
They genuinely love their jobs. Nothing is too much trouble, they are so friendly, courteous and truly treat you like family not guests!

I can't recommend this hotel highly enough.
We would love to come back here and spend more time.
It is an amazing part of Turkey.
