We visited the area in December of this year and were guided around the museum by a most knowledge, friendly and professional guide by the name Mustafa Gülgen, a professional tour guide and our driver Mohammed. Mustafa prepared an excellent program during our week in the area and with his vast knowledge, both historical and general we were provided a good insight into Turkish history and life. It was a delight to be in the company of these fine men who we highly recommend.

Stunning works from Mother nature - volcanic caves craved by rain and wind. In these caves, incredible, ancient frescos (some were defaced but many were still in excellent condition) depicting scenes from the Bible were seen serving as church, some living quarters as well, burial grounds. We visited as part of the Gate1 and had an amazing time. No pictures were allowed of the frescos.

This is one of the most beautiful and unique places in Turkey. The Fairy's Chimneys are so captivating and we couldn't help but took a lot of photos.

My wife and I visited Cappadocia from July 25 to July 29, 2013. I had researched the venue extensively before deciding that our best option was to use a tour agency to prepare our itinerary and provide guide services. We selected Sea Song Tours based in Istanbul. From the beginning of our discussions with Mehmet Akif Sukur we were confident that we had made the right choice. Akif clearly understood our particular needs and desires and prepared an excellent itinerary. Most importantly, we were assigned a professional, experienced guide, Miss Ozgul Cesur, who we found to be one of the best guides we have ever enjoyed over twenty years of extensive world travel that has taken us to over eighty countries. No trip is complete without a few hiccups and hurdles; ours was no exception. And yet, our guide, Ozgul, and her local Sea Song agent, Faruk Basibuyuk, were there at all times to assure that everything went smoothly. They were eminently successful; and we are forever grateful to them for providing us with an outstanding and memorable experience. I should comment upon the matter of our choice of accommodations. We were recommended to book our stay at a cave hotel, specifically, the Museum Hotel. However, for personal reasons--claustrophobia and extra tall height--we opted
to stay at the DoubleTree Hotel in Avanos. We are Hilton Honors members, and always, if possible, stay at Hilton properties. We have never been disappointed—until now. The DoubleTree Hotel Avanos is a gorgeous property. The room was very comfortable and had a beautiful view, pool and surrounding grounds. The problem was the management. In spite of the hotel catering to a wide spectrum of international travelers including many from the Far East, the ability of staff members to understand and speak English (the tourist's lingua franca) was inexplicably and detrimentally limited. Case in point: One evening we chose to dine in our room. My wife ordered the filet mignon entree. It arrived with mushrooms and spinach, but no meat. We tried to explain to the waiter, who claimed to speak English, that filet mignon was a cut of beef tenderloin. But there was no convincing him, so my wife had him accompany her to the reception desk where she asked to speak to the manager who did, indeed, speak excellent English, but, like the waiter, had no idea what a filet mignon was. Fortuitously, our excellent guide and her Sea Song agent colleague, showed up and took my wife out to dinner. This experience was distressful, but clearly illustrates that this hotel and its restaurant are not really ready for prime time as far as serving international clientele. We also noted that on our several dining experiences in the restaurant, the waiters were few and far between, failed to help diners find a place to sit, and spent most of their time chatting together in small clusters. Coffee refills went wanting.
Since we were curious about what we might have missed by not booking at a cave hotel, we asked our guide to take us to the Museum Hotel, which is probably the premier such accommodation in the area. She did, and, indeed, it is extraordinarily beautiful and fascinating. If you are not concerned about claustrophobia and/or height limitations, I would recommend it.
Finally, certainly, the highlight of our stay was the hot air balloon trip. If you can afford it, do try the “private” flight. Just you, the pilot, and the co-pilot, the latter of whom serves as a flying guide. It was money well spent. Our photographs and video clips are truly special. We hope this lengthy treatise is helpful. If you would like more info, please contact me at <ias9132@roadrunner.com>.
