“excellent value very friendly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2014 via mobile

The last reviewer was spot on. Otel Surkent is so clean and very good value. Super friendly reception staff but struggling to meet anyone in diyabakir who doesn't win Ms/ Mr friendly award 2014. We took a day tour with Omer and found it extremely worthwhile. Diyabakir has a maze of colourful backstreets some of which are raucously great fun and others that are a bit dodgy, though I couldn't tell one from another until I was too far down to stage a nonchalant retreat. Omer can of course plus he knows which doors to knock on to gain access to well hidden churches and how to have a laugh with the locals. Highlights for me were Kurdish Kahve, Dengbej singing (and being able to chat with the singers through Omer) and cruising round the city walls munching on fresh chickpeas still on their stalks. Highly recommend otel surkent to budget mid range traveller.

If you can put up with lot of pink the Surkent is a clean and comfortable budget style option with plenty of hot water. We had a room on the third floor at the back which was nice and quiet and the steep stairs up and down kept us fit. We didn't take the breakfast so paid 60TL a night for a room with two comfy single beds. Wi fi was fine as was location, close to the bus stop for the otogar and all the bus company offices.
We dont usually use a guide and you can manage without but we used Omer for the day which was worthwhile as he took us everywhere providing some explanation plus we saw some places and had some experiences that I doubt we would have managed on our own so considered it worthwhile and good value for money. You can find Omer easily at the hotel.

Hotel Surkent is a very good option for everyone who wants to discover Diyarbakir and surroundings: not only because it is clean, familiar and cheap, (with free wifi and colored rooms), or for its central position, but above all for the staff. None of them speaks english, but they are somehow capable to understand your needs. A particular help came from Mr Omar, (fluent english speaker), a tourist guide you can always meet in the hotel, that is able to show the secrets of the town, but is also capable to offer you tailor-made tours in the area - archeological, cultural, historical and - why not - gastronomical. You are in the Kurdish heart of Turkey: this is the best choice to discover a bit more this unique culture.

Room Tip: rooms on the higher floors have interesting views of Diyarbakir's roofs

Hotel Surkent is certainly a very fine adress to stay in town, not just because it is clean, comfortable and cheap (double: 60 TL) as well as centrally located, but especially also because Omar is working together informally with the hotel, a very friendly person who can show you - for very reasonable price - around the city (very recommendable, because you would otherwise not discover as much interesting places and events by your own) and the region. We've had the pleasure to have his company for a day in Diyarbakir (don't miss the Dengbej sessions of elderly men singing together every afternoon) and one in Mardin and he helped us kindly and patiently for everything from organizig bus tickets to buying wedding rings! He would also come with you to trips for several days in the region (with the possibility of organizing a car) and even invited us to see his home-village. You can call him in advance (+90 (536) 311 42 20) or contact him through facebook to get information and plan something together. Omar speaks Kurdish, Turkish, English, French and Russian!

Don't let the wild color scheme deter you--hot pink walls and bright orange curtains are a bit shocking, but this place is a budget-travel steal. For just 30TL a person you get a clean room, a clean, private bathroom, nice and hospitable staff, friendly travelers, and a central location. There's also good wifi, an air conditioning unit (which we didn't use because it wasn't warm enough for that yet), TV (also didn't use--Diyarbakir is a great city, don't waste your time watching television!), and again, great service. I can't stress that last one enough--especially as a woman traveling alone or with another woman, feeling comfortable where you stay is very important.

The regular staff doesn't speak English (though they are very friendly and Tuncay does what he can to help), so they call their friend Omer who can translate, give you any information you need and acts as a tour guide for those who want it. We didn't hire him as a guide but we speak enough Turkish to get around. Still, Omer and the rest are very helpful and friendly.

I can't wait to visit Diyarbakir again and I'll definitely stay at Surkent when I come back.

It is a lovely place as a budget hotel with wifi, tv, bathroom inside, and even air conditional(which works well, means i can stay here in summer also) in such a place during my whole trip. The room was very clean. 35TL for a single, u might barging until 30 i guess.
Diyarbakir is a nice city, not as its impression in the News.

The staff asked Omer was accompanying me to ATM in the night (for protection).
He became my guide since that night.
He is a nice guy speaking English, french(which i speaks with him in this 2 languages.) and also russian.
As he told me, he was not well educated, but during his working with tourist at the western side of turkey, he started to learn these language and managed to speak fluently while he is also working in other place in the city at same time.
If you don;t have enough time, or u r concerned about the safety in diyarbakir for founding someplace in a narrow alley, this guild is highly recommended.

Room Tip: There is no elevater, some room has a biger single bed, some not.

Hotel Surkent has been a great base during our short visit in Diyarbakir due to its location within the old city. It is a nice place for the low budget traveler.
Our two-bed room in the second floor was quiet, nice and warm. Of course there was a TV in the room and even free Wi-fi.

Since the staff does not speak English they called up Omar, a travel-guide for Diyarbakir/Diyarbakir region and served us delicious çay while we waited.
Asking for Omar to be your guide in Diyarbakir is highly recommended! He speaks Turkish, Kurdish, English and French and is certainly a kindhearted person - everyone in the city seems to know him.
Unfortunately we didn't have a lot of time but we got to see quite a few of the city's great sights thanks to Omar. He definitely has the ability to quickly put together a great tour that works for you and your interests. If you wanted to learn more about the history around Diyarbakir and visit the smaller villages he could guide you there as well!
Visiting cities is not always just about the sights, it's also about the people you meet. After a tour with Omar you will not only be happy about all of the historic buildings and sights you've seen, you'll also have at least one new friend in Diyarbakir.
