This is the sister hotel to the more recently acquired Agora Konak Saray Hotel. First impressions on a very hot day in Izmir were unfavorable as the taxi driver negotiated tight turns, donkey carts, and local markets to reach the hotel on a crowded narrow street. The first night was unpleasant due to noise from outside. These concerns were shared with the hotel staff and immediately a change was made to a lovely room on the third floor. A spacious room with excellent AC, a desk for Internet writing, and close to the restaurant. The bathroom and general layout was fine for me as a solo traveler. The manager Nadir and staff Turgay and Kubilay were excellent after the first night's concern. English is spoken by several of the staff including Nadir and Turgay. The small reception area is balanced by the large, efficient, economical, and delicious restaurant on the third floor with chef Murat. I stayed several extra days due to the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. Side trips to Cesme and ferry stops in the bay of Izmir were lots of fun.

Room Tip: I advise against the rooms in the rear of the building on the first floor. They are next to an Otopa...

So you have to watch out with this one. There are two hotels with similar names owned by the same people in Izmir. One is the Agora Konak Saray, which is a great value, new hotel; the other is the Konak Saray, which is really overpriced and dingy. We stayed in both and left the old KS and stayed in the new one after 1 night. We had a great, huge room with a view in the AKS, while we had a tiny room with no natural light in the KS. So if you can put up with the slightly extra walk into town, head up the road and ask for a room with a view. Other tip for Izmir - definitely go to the restaurant Sakiz. It is soooooo amazing! Anyway, maybe you can do better but we were happy with the AKS.

This hotel was okay, but certainly nothing to write home about. There were flies everywhere, it reeked of smoke, the staff was friendly but spoke little to no English, and it was located in a back alley that was filthy and reminded me of my days in Hanoi. There were rat carcasses being devoured by cats in the street and just general uncleanliness. The food at the restaurant on the top floor was not very good, and I'm convinced I got sick from something I ate there.

When we arrived we were dismayed to find the location less than safe. My wife and I are seasoned world travelers and not frightened by much. This place gave us the creeps. It was dirty and smelled of smoke. After finding our room we immediatly returned to the front desk to ask for a refund. After two weeks of fighting and multiple conversations with the manager, they charged our credit card for one nights stay. In reality we only stayed less than 15 minutes. I wish I could say something positive but I can't. Well, except for the fact that the hotel staff didn't try to give us the Vulcan death grip.

The service and breakfast were good, the room was very large with two beds (though quite dated). Big down side was the smell of smoke in the corridors upstairs and in the bedroom. We asked for a non-smoking room but it still stank - it seemed to be coming in under the door from the corridor. The location is a bit out of the way but walking distance to the Agora, which is well worth seeing.

Stayed 2 nights at this hotel as a family of 4. We found the room basic and the bathroom rather smelly and shabby looking, with mould between the tiles. Some of the rooms don't seem to have windows to the outside but only to the central corridor and are rather small and claustrophobic. The breakfast buffet was large, but of low quality. The staff at the reception was generally rude and disinterested. They were trying to flog over-priced trips to Ephesus and after having declined those offers, they ignored us completely for the rest of our stay. Though the hotel is located centrally and convenient for the bazaar it is in a very run down part of town and not ideal for families with young children. To our dismay the satellite TV provided in the rooms does not filter porn channels! Overall not a pleasant stay and we are quite surprised by the high ratings that this hotel does not deserve.
