At the suggestion of our travel agent, we booked our day in Ephesus with Ephesus Deluxe Tours. I emailed the owner, Deniz Kose directly and received prompt responses. Ephesus Deluxe Tours offered the same excursion we would have otherwise booked the the cruise ship but at $50.00 less per person!

We were met at the dock in Kusadasi by our guide, Evren Ozdemir, and learned that my wife and I were his only guests for the day along with our own private driver! Evren was the perfect host; sharing not only his knowledge of the sights but answering all of our questions professionally.

Like every other excursion on this trip (perfume and leather factories), this trip also included a brief stop at a rug cooperative where we observed the weaving techniques and were then brought to a private room to see rugs and, of course, an effort was made to sell us a rug in prices ranging from $300 - $40,000. We were offered tea and an appetizer while the rugs were displayed and after the presentation, advised the host that we were not interested. The host was most pleasant, thanked us for our time and made no effort to "hard sell" us.

Our guide rejoined us at this point and we enjoyed a great lunch of local vegetables and chicken with fresh halvah for dessert.

My wife let her hat in the rest room and we did not realize it until we were on our way to the next stop in our tour. Evren immediately called and drove us back to that location at the end of the day to pick up her hat.

We could not have been more pleased with Ephesus Deluxe Tours and enjoyed one of the best days of our vacation with Evren.

Deliberately booked a 4 hour versus 8 hour tour of Ephesus as we were only interested in touring the ancient site and not in shopping. Ephesus is an amazing experience well worth seeing, but our female tour guide was merely adequate, too soft spoken and without a tool to easily identify her and herd us around in large crowds. Despite no information to this effect on the tour description, we were then provided a "free lunch" at the rug factory, followed by an educational tour of carpet making and then unfortunately a hard sell. This seems to be the norm for tours in this area so be forewarned. That would have been OK, but apparently our "tour" was not yet complete. We were then driven to a leather factory to watch a fashion show, followed by another hard sell, and a grand finale at a ceramics demonstration. No one in our group of 14 bought anything and what should have been a lovely 4 hour experience turned into a frustrating 7 hour excursion. If you willingly and knowingly sign up for a day long tour then great, but this was not our intention, and the hijacking of our time was rude.

We book the deluxe 7½ hours tour with pick up at our post in Kusadasi. English speaking professional tour guide Elcin was very knowledgeable. She was already at the port when we got off the ship. The sites were amazing, lunch was ok at a nice local restaurant drinks were not included. We also visited a carpet factory we're offered coffee, Tea or ouzo. They showed us how the carpets are made and how they gather silk, it was very interesting. They also showed us many carpets no pressure for a sale, though they did show many. We opted to go as Elcin asked us if we wanted to see it. Also visited a hand crafted pottery factory, it was beautiful the craftsman ship amazing. We were back to the ship in plenty of time, no worries about the fear instilled from the cruise company about not waiting for you. Best way to see is booking tours on your own as you say big money. Our private tour for 3 was only $75 each and best of all we were able to pay with Visa.

below is what the trip included.
Private A/C minibus
Visit to Ephesus including the Odeon, temple of Hadrian, roman baths, the fountain of Trajan ,Celsius library and the Theater.
House of the Virgin Mary.
St John’s Basilica.
The Temple of Artemis.
Terrace houses. Lunch with Turkish starters, salads, kebabs from the grill, and fruits of the season.
All entrance fees,
Parking fees,

Our tour of Ephesus was guided by a very knowledgeable 27 year old lady named Gizem Çakirgöz. She turned out to be very knowledgeable, easy to understand and very easy to like. We began with a visit to the house where the Virgin Mary is believed to have lived the last few years of her life. Ephesus was next and it was very impressive. Our entire group consisted of Gizem, my wife and me, plus a very competent driver. That made for a customized experience we couldn't have gotten any other way. We also visited the temple of Artemis, which we could have done without, it is a ruin with little to see. We ended the tour with an excellent, traditional Turkish lunch and a demonstration of carpet weaving. The guide obviously makes a huge difference on a tour like this and our guide couldn't have been any better.

We signed up with Ephesus Deluxe for the 7 hour + lunch semi private tour two months ago prior our HAL cruise. Our guide met us at port and the 14 of us were quickly whisked off in a minibus, heading for Ephesus. Our guide, Zafer Bozoglu, had excellent English and was very knowledgeable regarding the history of Ephesus and of the region. His humorous antidotes and running narratives kept us informed and entertained through out the day. We visited three other historical sites and of course did the obligatory rug factory and ceramic shop tours. The lunch was pretty good, giving us a chance to chat with fellow travelers.
A good choice - I highly recommend it!
