We loved it. Spent a lot of time walking and looking. This is the old city of Smyrna and it does not get as much attention as Ephesus and others. It is a wonderful city and they are doing a good job. Still opening up more of the old town.

Compared to some European Museums, the Izmir Archaeological Museum is rather small, but that might also be, because many ancient artefacts of this region are exhibited in Europe...
There are some fascinating pieces in the museum, but even if you just look at the pieces in the outdoor area, you will find fascinating details (and lots of cats).

after you have seen the actual sites in the country side, a visit to the museum is well worth it, it ties together what the site looked like in its day and the utensils and whatnot used back then. the museum is not huge and you can cover it in an hour or so. the location is central to most hotels in the city centre core

I was glad I took the time to visit the archeological museum. The collection consists of a floor of sculptures (primarily 1st century BC - 3rd century AD), a floor of pottery spanning many centuries, and a collection of ancient jewelry and coins. The sculptures were underwhelming, not because they weren't good (they were) but only because so much stone sculpture survives from this period that I had seen a lot before. The pottery exhibit was also good, just not of particular interest to me personally. What impressed me was the jewelry and coins exhibit, especially the coins. They had coins dating back 500 BC to the Persian Empire--some of the oldest coins in existence. There was also an impressive display of Ronan coins from the 2nd century through the Ottoman Empire. The first century was conspicuous absent but every other Cesar's image was represented, usually with multiple coins minted during his reign. Definitely check out the Ethnolmology Museum directly across the street. Also a good museum and shame to miss if you are already there.
