It WS had enough to find directions to the site but worst of all there are no actual workers in there as it is a free site. Being swamped by begging children and no general information readily available ...disappointing. Its also in a shocking neigbourhood which again not an issue but be mindful

“Disappointingly run down”
Reviewed 23 July 2014 via mobile

From all over Izmir you can see the castle standing proudly on top of the hill, and so you get excited about seeing what one would expect is a grand spectacle.

The trip up is an adventure, we caught a bus from the Konak station, you can ask around and someone will point it out.

Entry is free, but this is made painfully obvious once you walk inside the gates from the rubbish everywhere and scribbled graffiti and vandalism on the old monuments.

There's hardly anything left to look at, aside from the reconstructed walls you can see from below, and some information boards outlining an interesting history (also vandalized).

The real shame is it could be amazing, there is an old cistern still visible, and we would be happy to pay a few lira entry if it meant it was better maintained and looked after.

Would recommend saving your energy and looking at better looked after history anywhere else in Turkey.

“Don't be so afraid, folks.”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

A. Very nice views of Izmir & the port, but the site doesn't have much of archaeological interest aside from the cisterns, which you can't enter.

B. I'm amazed how many folks say to "exercise extreme caution," etc, merely judging by the appearance of the folks they passed or saw. None of these reviews mentioned any actual problems encountered, merely the *sight* of "gypsies," "colored people," teenagers, and "homeless-looking people." Yes, there are Romani (that's the not-racist word for "gypsy," by the way) & Kurdish people & (omgomg) teenagers there. Yes, they are mostly poor. But for chrissake, you're on an urban mountaintop in Turkey, you should probably expect to see some poverty & some brown people.

“Great place to visit”
Reviewed 13 May 2014 via mobile

Great place to visit not too big but its interesting and has great views. Akso lovely resturants all around the area. Just explore also there is a frwat market downtown, however not too easy to find but just follow the people with fruit and u will find a very big market on the oposite side of the Mountain. Great place to go on a saturday and sunday, very beautiful and there are so many resturants to choose from. If u go early enough and take ut passport u can go accross to one of the greek oslanda for the day and come back by boat. Lots of people fishing and enjoying the beauty around. Great monument from above views are awesome.
