We ended up at this restaurant twice in our 36 hour stay. After coming off some excellent meals in Istanbul, Zencefil in Safranbolu blew every one of those places away. All of your standard Turkish options on the menu, but everything is just BETTER. Generous portions. The shepherd's salad was shockingly delicious (as far as salads usually go).
The baklava is far and away the best we had in our entire three weeks in Turkey. The warm syrup oozes out the sides when your fork hits the filo.
It's a wife/husband team -- and the kitchen is feet from you so you watch the prep. There's no special decoration, just plain tables on the bottom floor of a home with excellent food piled on the table, which we truly appreciated after some pretty kitschy and mediocre tourist traps in Istanbul that DID have "atmosphere".
