There aren't a lot of options in fethiye but we felt this was not great value and had to have the bedsheets changed as they had dirty fingerprints all over them. Did not feel comfortable here.

Set in a good location on the main street near one end of the old town and immediately behind the very modern and upmarket marina, the Irem Hotel is a sister property to the Irem Pansiyon, to be found nearby on the opposite side of the same street. Devoid of any character, our brief stay at this relatively modern multi story concrete block was quite underwhelming and memorable only for its mediocrity.

Entering at street level, it is a two floor hike down to the simple restaurant in the basement and at least one floor up to all of the rooms. The elevator was out of service and we had the impression that this might be a long term condition. Good exercise if you like that sort of thing.

The room was simple but reasonably adequate and, being located very close to the water end of the building, had a very small balcony with a good view of the bay. However the view from the balconies on most other rooms was of the blank concrete walls that formed the sides of the adjacent properties. If possible, try to get and end or near end room.

The room TV came with a limited number of satellite channels and we were surprised to find these included two porno channels, which suggested that the target customer was not average tourists. The ensuite bathroom was very small and there was no proper shower stall, just a hand shower device hanging from the back wall. Careful planning is needed to avoid soaking clothes or other possessions when showering.

Breakfast, in a basement room adjacent to a small outdoor swimming pool, was a simple and basic traditional Turkish buffet style. It was close to the end of the traditional tourist season and the hotel appeared to have a vacancy rate of well over 90%. Judging by the body language and minimal attempt at any friendly ommunication offered by the manager/receptionist, it appeared that he was desperately hoping that this would soon rise to 100%. We felt like intruders on his hollow concrete domain.

We stayed at the Irem Pansiyon whilst touring SW Turkey from Antalya to Datca and back. I am pleased to say that it provided probably the best value for money of the 9 hotels we stayed in. We paid 45 ytl per night B&B for a large ensuite double room with a great view over the marina beyond the Ece Saray hotel and across the bay. The room was spotless and the bathroom small but functional. This is definitely not a 4 * hotel but neither are you paying 4* prices! You can pay at least double that price at nearby hotels which are very pleasant but no better in terms of location. The breakfast was the standard Turkish fare and perfectly adequate. As I say the pansiyon overlooks the Ece Saray, probably the best hotel in central Fethiye, and you can use their fabulous pool and loungers for 20 ytl each per day. The pansiyon is located approx 10 - 15 mins stroll from the harbour cafes and the bazaar.

We have stayed in other hotels in Fethiye but would not hesitate to go back to the Irem - and spend the money we save on other things!

Best place to eat - undoubtedly the fish market, choose and pay for your fish from one of the many fishmongers and take them to one of the restaurants that enclose the market - they all charge 5 ytl pp to prepare and cook your fish and provide a very good salad, plate of rocket and bread. Indicative prices - 35 ytl for a kilo of large prawns and an amazing 5 ytl for a small / medium sea bass or a sea bream. You can eat really well here, the people are friendly and the drinks are reasonable - 4 ytl for a beer and 25 ytl for a bottle of decent white wine. Often the restaurant will take the fish back to the fishmonger and they will prepare the fish - don't worry you get the same fish back that you paid for!!

Stayed for 2 nights. By far the least helpful establishment over a 4 week trip throughout Turkey. We were advised before arriving from eastern Turkey, that the staff could arrange for 1 bag of laundry to be washed for around 10YTL. When we arrived they said no, not possible. So I asked, well, is there anywhere else that we could get this laundry done? "No, don't know" was the answer. After going back to our room, and discussing with my partner, we went back to reception and asked why we were originally told that washing could be done. He said, maybe at Irem Otel [which we found out later was the sister hotel directly across the street]. We arrived at reception there and asked if they could do some washing for us [or if we could do it ourselves], as we were staying at the pension across the street. "No, don't do washing". Was the answer. Now, whilst some may think...maybe a language problem. There was no language barrier. We can speak conversational Turkish. We then walked to the Tourist Information office to ask for the nearest laundry. They were very helpful & we got our laundry back the next day before we left Fethiye. [Anyone who has travelled on 10 hour bus trips to/from eastern Turkey, will know that once you get back to a major town..you need washing to be done!] Now whilst the management at Irem Pension might think this is minor [and they quite obivously don't care], it affected us in the following ways: 1) no clothes to wear & had to buy more, 2) more importantly, no clothes to wear on a cruise off the coast of Fethiye which we had planned to take. Not only did they miss out on that tourist dollar, but we were bitterly disappointed. We had 2 days in Fethiye, and by the staff not being even remotely interested in helping out with a simple enquiry [a real oddity in Turkey, as most people are very friendly] this ruined our time in Fethiye. Ironically, another lady staying at Irem Pansion walked straight across to Irem Otel across the street and had her washing done for her within 3 hours. We were very excited to have heard about that [not], just before leaving Fethiye on to our next destination [now armed with clean clothes]. Would not recommend Irem Pension to anyone. Also there is a note in the rooms saying that they may or may not clean your room during the day, quote "in case we forget to clean your room..." even though there are only a handful of rooms. How hard can it be to remember when you only have about 12 rooms or so...

This was a cheap, but adequate place to stay in Fethiye. We paid as little as anywhere in Turkey, but it was clean and quiet (but may be basic for a longer stay). The service was very friendly and genuine. The location is great- a very short walk to the marina.
