“Peace, good company and quiet”
Reviewed 23 July 2009

About an hours transport in an air conditioned people carrier brings you to the harbour. A quick ten minutes in a large boat and your on the island. There is a steep hill to the hotel but at least there is help at hand with the luggage. Some of the other people travelling with us had been before and it was being treated as a bit of a bolt hole for the peace. We had the room named Sahin which was on the top floor but only two flights of stairs. We chose this room for the view from the balcony and we were not disappointed. the whole week was the most relaxed, and maybe the best holiday I ever had. It just hit the mark! The mainland is about half an hour on the boat and the town of fethiye is pleasant and interesting. The meals at the hotel are a choice between a regional menu and ordinary food, both really nice. The highlight of my week was seeing a Manta Ray whilst snorkling only a few yards from the swimming platform.

We stayed on Ece Boutique Hotel in July 2008. The hotel keeps only one room Flamingo for their direct bookings all the rest is marketted by a British company called Exclusive Escapes. Which I must say chooses the right people for Ece and Sovalye island. All pleasent, there to rest and enjoy the hospitality, sea, wonderfull views, cooling breeze, and Turkish meals. The salads at lunch are wonderfull. If you want to mix with others there are space for it, if you want to keep away there are many corners to can enjoy only yourself.(This is what we did) . If you want to mix with the crowd in Calis beach it is 5 minutes apart, for Fethiye it takes 20 minutes. If you want your quietness and calmes come back to sovalye. The island is much cooler than Fethiye and the breeze from the sea works like a natural air conditioner.

Do not go there with a typical hotel expectation, it is like a guests house with large , comfortable , all sea viewfull rooms, many terraces through a beautiful garden which makes it so nice that you feel like home. A beautiful home but you do no work at all, only rest and enjoy the atmosphere. In the garden you can meet many types of tress from banana , pommogranite, olive to rubber trees.

The staff realy treats you as their guests ,not customers. They are there when needed. All you need to do is ask ifever you need something special. You feel you are being looked after.

We were given the opportunity by Handan to lenghten our stay, which we went home with a total rest. It is a shame that they have only one room for their own marketing that you can not share this wonderful place with your good friends together.

If you love pets, you must see Efe, a Sybirian wolf from Canada, a tedy bear. He is always there waiting for your cuddle. (I felt he might get offended if I do not mention him here)

  • Liked — felt like home but with beautiful sun, garden and views
  • Disliked — some music from calis beach at night

We recently stayed at the quiet and beautiful spot of Ece on Sovalye island for an idyllic week in the sun. This is the ideal hideaway from the worries of work, your email inbox, global warming or the tax man - no-one will find you here! Although that makes the place sound remote, it's actually surprisingly accessible - an hour's drive from Dalaman airport then a short 15 minute boat ride across the water and you can be there. Ece hotel is charming - simple, clean and spacious rooms perched on top of the hill, with beautiful views from every room, or indeed from the small sunny terrace at which you take your meals. A short trip down the steps and you are at the water's edge, where you can take off in one of the freely available kayaks, do a bit of swimming or fishing, or simply soak up the sun.

If you are looking for night life, clubbing and excitement, this is definitely not the place for you - there is only one small cafe and no shops on the island, just a few summer houses and a few footpaths - the whole place can be covered in about half an hour's stroll. But if you want a little local culture you can easily go across the water on the boat, which will take you there free of charge a couple of times a day. There you can go to the local market, haggle with the rug seller, find several nice restaurants and bars along the waterfront or go on a few local sightseeing tours. So there is a bit of something for everyone - from lazy days by the small pool to exploring the local area. I took my 10 year old daughter and felt rather guilty about taking her miles from the action, but she really enjoyed herself.

One of the nicest things is meeting other like-minded people who want to come away from the mass market package deal type holiday - with only 12 rooms at the hotel you quickly get to know the other guests and can share a drink and a chat about your day while feeling you are getting some local culture, so you don't feel like you are cooped up with loads of "Brits abroad". So I would thoroughly recommend Sovalye if you are looking for a quiet, beautiful spot, with as much or as little activity as you wish. It is also reasonably priced for what you get thrown in - meals on the island are expensive (as it all has to come over from the mainland) but this is offset by the overall reasonable holiday price and the free extras such as a daily boat service, kayaks and a beach towel to take home, etc.

Finally the staff at Ece hotel are all helpful and friendly, plus the dog Efe was a big hit with my daughter Hannah. Owners Handan and her husband Erdogan were regularly on hand to answer questions (and handy that he is a doctor in case needed), and Handan was extremely kind and understanding when I thought I'd lost my purse. She was far more concerned about me and my situation than how I was going to pay my hotel bill! So a thumbs up from me, and hope others can enjoy this perfect holiday setting - take me with you!"

This was our third holiday with Exclusive Escapes but our first to Ece on Sovalye Island. Always tempted to do too much on holiday, we thought a small quiet island location might be 'enforced relaxation'. Despite our frequent trips across the water to Fethiye, this proved to be the case and by the end of our stay we felt well rested and would definitely liked to have stayed longer. The hotel is set high on a hill with beautiful views across the bay, rooms are large and comfortable, owners and staff friendly (and that includes Efe the dog) food is good and the general atmosphere is relaxed and slow. We took the 9.30am water taxi over to Fethiye most mornings -30 minutes or so and a treat in itself with Captain Zuhtu - to visit the harbour, markets, shops, stalls and marina. Back on the 1pm boat for an afternoon of swimming, fishing, walking and relaxing with other guests before making the difficult decision of where to eat. The hotel offered a set meal each evening or a small a-la-carte menu. We ate in on three occasions, all of which were very good but really enjoyed our evening outings with several other guests to various restaurants in Fethiye - notably the Arena Restaurant which was excellent and hugely entertaining as just about every meal arrives either in flames or encased in a terracotta pot which the waiters smash to bits at your table. Cost of the water taxi back to the island - pre-arranged with the Captain - was divided between the guests. The inclusive gulet trip was as enjoyable as ever and is a wonderfully relaxing day of swimming, eating, drinking and sunbathing. We enquired about a day-trip and then, rather uncharacteristally changed our minds in favour of fishing on the jetty instead. We will have many memories of this holiday – the turtles in Fethiye bay, pelicans in the harbour, kingfishers and tortoises on Sovalye, we met some lovely people and by mid-week I hadn’t a clue what day it was.

  • Liked — Peaceful Location
  • Disliked — Steep slope to hotel! Some meals pricey.

I agree with the previous positive reviews and wish to add that, for us, it was a great stay for the children too. We travelled with our 8 year old grand-daughter. She had a great time making holiday pals with two other children. They enjoyed the pool and the sea using a snorkel and mask to find fish, shells and search for the remains of roman and lycian buildings which are littered above and below the water line. My only advice would be to bring a goodly quantity of bottled water with you or go to Fethiye to get some because it is sold on the island at a premium. You need a lot of water to keep well. The hotel catches the afternoon meltita breeze which has a delghtfully coolling effect.

This is a lovely, well-run hotel with great character, friendly staff and great management. The food is Turkish and good and the rooms large, clean and comfortable. The island is beautiful, and if you want to go to Fethiye, the fish market there is unique and a delicious place to eat. Definitely worth a visit - we have been three times and plan to return.

Not wanting to write a review before wanting to keep my Island secret... I felt if too many people knew about Sovalye it would be spoilt.... We have been travelling to Ece for many years. Often spending a month on the Island.

Our first visit was a two-centre break and we only had a week at this delightful hotel… We felt it wasn’t long enough…. So the following year we booked again for three weeks… then returned in late September for a month.

At this time the apartments were self-catering but you could always ask for an evening meal to be cooked for you… nothing was ever too much trouble for Handan and her staff. We have always found them to be extremely helpful, friendly and accommodating…

We used the water taxi most days as we enjoy walking…There are lots of interesting walks from Fethiye taking best part of the day. We usually caught the first early boat and returned on the 6.30pm shuttle… exhausted but pleased to be back on our Island.

The Island is pedestrianised and takes 40 minutes or so to walk around. It is quiet even though there is many other homes built on it. You hardly ever-meet large crowds, and everyone seems to respect each other’s space. On Sovalye you have the best of all worlds… quiet relaxing days when you want to chill out, and yet you have the main land only 20mins away for much more activity. You can use the canoes, which are always a challenge, and if used to sailing on the sea, lasers are available on signing a disclaimer. Sovalye can be seen from the main land but it doesn’t look like an Island until you approach it. A well kept secret.

Ece Boutique Hotel on Sovalye is situated in a pretty location and has pleasant views across the bay towards Fethiye and out to Red Island. When Fethiye gets too hot the Island offers a wonderful retreat always being cooler with refreshing winds.

In 2005 Handan & Erdogan decided for all sorts of reasons to change the apartments to a Boutique Hotel… It was a real adventure for them with many difficulties to overcome. When we visited May 2006 we were so pleased for them… as their dreams seemed to be coming a reality. They started the season extremely tired after all the construction work and as always eager to please…. There were, as always with all building work some things that could only be fixed after the start date. Not to mention ill health and staffing problems… (I know this shouldn’t be the guests problem, but Handan & staff always listen to guests and do everything in their power to make them happy.

Efe is a wonderful dog and family pet… He isn’t allowed just to roam freely…. The hosts are aware that not all guests like dogs…. and always ask before letting him out. At meal times he is never allowed around the guests. Erdogan usually takes Efe for a walk most evenings after he has returned from hospital or even late at night.

The litter mentioned mostly washes over from the mainland…. And tourists are as much to blame for not taking their litter home and disposing of it properly. The Islanders and many of us love their Island the way it is and they also have to adhere to local government rules… so it is not a pretty Island but a wonderful haven with views to die for.

The new apartments are wonderful… simply decorated with local furnishings and much more spacious than when it was self-catering. Having stayed in other accommodation in Fethiye, Ece certainly is 5star….

Prices may be on the high side compared to the mainland but no one insists you eat on the Island… and as before Handan will do anything to accommodate any reasonable request. (Diets always catered for if known). As there are no shops on the Island one has to realise that the transport of fresh food daily does add to the price… and again all we are asked to do is say what we would like by 14.00 so that the staff can fetch and carry in time for the evening meal.

This year we were at Ece again in May/June and certainly enjoyed our short time there…. It is still a wonderful retreat… especially for those who want to get away from the crowds and the noise. Our only sadness is that we have to wait until next year before we can enjoy Ece and all it has to offer.

  • Liked — The acomodation, boat trip and peaceful location.
  • Disliked — The slope to get to apartments...but it was part of the experience.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Ece Boutique Hotel on the island of Sovalye enjoys the most spectacular location on the water's edge, with 12 spacious rooms with wonderful sea views. The 11 spacious rooms (and one two-bedroom suite) are divided between two buildings and each open-plan room has a double or twin bed, a sitting area, fabulous picture windows to maximize the view, and a large balcony or terrace with, of course, more superb views out to sea. The Terrace Restaurant and pool area are the focal point of the hotel. Guests are requested to book at breakfast for the special dinner that is prepared each evening with the freshest of ingredients. Steps lead down from the restaurant past terraced gardens dotted with secret hideaways - to the Private Waterfront. Here guests can relax by the water's edge enjoying the wonderful views. An 'honesty bar' is located and a waiter service is provided on the terraces to ensure guests don't have to climb up the hill too often! The active are well catered for with the complimentary water sports and will enjoy the challenge of paddling around the island, or swimming - which is a little harder! At the tip of the island, a ten-minute walk from Ece, is the simple sand and shingle Sunset Beach - home to the Ada Beach Club & Restaurant. This magical setting provides the perfect vantage point from which to watch the sun dip below the horizon. Having tasted the unique atmosphere of Sovalye, we find that Guests rarely elect to venture from the island. However, on the occasions they do it is a simple hop across the water to the harbour town of Fethiye where its Turkish and cosmopolitan delights await your exploration as does the Lycian coastline beyond. A complimentary water-taxi operates three times throughout the day and evening from the hotel approximately 20-minutes to Fethiye and 7-minutes to Calis Beach. ... more   less
