I always bear in mind, when I review anywhere for Trip Advisor, what I actually paid for my holiday and what I could therefore reasonably expect to get for my money in exchange. In this case the cost (Thomson) was very cheap indeed for a week for two people- the cheapest foreign trip we've ever done- and I do feel that some earlier reviewers might have lost sight of this. Evin Club doesn't pretend to be anything other than 2-star apartments with an attached restaurant-we only wanted a clean, friendly base from which to explore the area- and it was wonderful value for what we paid to stay there.
We hadn't ever been to Turkey together before this October and were concerned, after we'd booked our stay at Evin Club and then read various Trip Advisor reviews, that firstly Marmaris and secondly the Club itself would be a rowdy, noisy place more suited to lively 18 to 30 type holidaymakers (we are both in our fifties.) Actually in October we need not have worried- we have stayed at far noisier hotels even in laid-back India. A lot of the bigger clubs, bars and discos along the front were either closed or very quiet and we enjoyed exploring the Old Town and the Bazaar as well as the harbour area. However, I personally would not go in high summer. I guess Marmaris would be a different place.
Most of the clientele in the Club at this end of the season were mature couples, with several younger guests who usually stopped by for a drink or meal in the evening and then went out, and one or two families with young kids.
So was it 'noisy'? Well, I agree that you should be aware that there is 80's music piped to the pool area, but we tuned it out after a while when we were by the pool or in the restaurant (and we liked some of it) and in any case we do not spend the majority of our time on any holiday sunbathing or swimming in hotel pools, although we found it all too easy to relax when waited on hand and foot! I myself could have stayed at the club all day and not be distressed by the music- it's definitely not as loud or revolting as the stuff pumped out by the loudspeakers at the hotel where we stayed in Tunisia last year. Russian/middle European disco music is far worse. Take my word for it.
In our opinion the club deserves its good reputation for cleanliness, good food and friendly service. The whole place was scrupulously clean and well maintained, our apartment light and modern and equipped with enough utensils and crockery to produce basic holiday meals such as pasta or salads- although we ate in the restaurant every night and just made ourselves cups of tea in our room.
We thought both the Turkish specialities and the various steaks in the restaurant were delicious and we were prepared to pay the quite modest prices asked by the Club, but there is no doubt that if you want to schlep into Marmaris you can get meals and drinks cheaper elsewhere. We tried one or two other recommended places in town for lunch and decided we preferred the Club, so you pays your money and you takes your choice.
We were blown away by the friendliness, hospitality and dignity of the Turkish people we met everywhere we went. All the waiting staff at Evin Club work hard from dawn to the end of the night and are kind, attentive and cheerful- and they suit their approach to the age of the guest they are serving! What's the point of huffing and puffing when they flirt with attractive young women? They didn't ignore us at all, nor the families with kids who were eating in the restaurant, so we didn't mind. Our cleaners were sweet, friendly and very efficient and Isobel, Dot and Ali in reception were so helpful and informative- and Ali was a mine of information about Old Marmaris.
I know it is boring just reading superlatives so if I had to pick on anything at all I would just say that Turkey is a smoker's paradise- and this includes the club's restaurant where there are no restrictions as there are in the UK. This may or may not suit you but it was widespread everywhere we went.
All our excursions were superb value for money and I recommend a trip to Pamukkale to paddle in the hot thermal waters of the travertine terraces then explore the ruined Roman city spread out along the hillside behind. We have never seen anywhere in the world like this.
I have no hesitation in recommending Evin Club- we loved it and Turkey and will definitely go back when we get the opportunity- but I think it would pay to research the time of year when you go, depending on your tastes and inclinations.
