Hospoda is a family run restaurant in the heart of Uzhhorod, conveniently located on Voloshina Street. There’s no missing it on your way to/from Uzhhorod Castle and Skansen from the city centre.
It’s not large: two small halls (non-smoking, one with the fireplace) and a summer terrace. The interior is simple and cosy.
Nearly entire meals served here is cooked by traditional Transcarpathian Ukrainian, Hungarian and Slovak receipts. This alone makes Hospoda exceptional and worthy a visit.
The food is home-like: its presentation is unpretentious, but it is mouthwatering! Traditional Bohrach soup (of meat, smoked brisket, veal, vegetables and torhono - grated dough dumplings) can be done in several variations, from plain to extremely spicy (the way we loved it). The best Chovlent (pork in the pot stewed with beans, pearl barley and tomato) we tried during two-weeks’ road trip around Transcarpathians was also cooked here. And their Tiramisu-like dessert was something we would return for.
We discovered Hospoda by pure chance, and were so pleased that dined here three times, though normally try different places. Once we were even invited to try a local speciality cooked by the hostess specifically for us! And each time they succeeded to surprise us with some new delicious things. And I'm not even mentioning the prices, more than reasonable.
The hostess, a very nice lady, would always personally come out to make sure our caprices were satisfied. The service was very warm and caring, exactly as you would expect from a home-run place.
They would serve everything here - from breakfasts to romantic dinners and banquets. Apart from running the restaurant, they also let rooms.
Unless you seek posh interior and exquisite presentation, I would recommend Hospoda to anyone willing to try traditional local cuisine. Hospoda is neither posh, nor exquisite. It’s simple and delicious, home-like.
