“A Great Find in the Hamptons”
Reviewed 6 July 2010

We just returned from a long weekend at the White Sands and since I hadn't seen any recent reviews I thought I would update. We thought the place was great. As others have noted, the beach is fantastic, and just steps from the rooms. The motel itself is small, which we liked, and immaculate, with a lovely garden. It is very peaceful and quiet -- we did not find the walls to be thin and heard very little noise from room to room. It has a very low-key quality and while there isn't staff to set up lounges on the beach or serve people, that was part of the charm in our view. It is truly easy living at the beach in the best sense of the word. It's in a small residential neighborhood, which also adds to a unique and homey feel.

We had a large efficiency, which was furnished simply but very pleasantly in tones of blue, with a small couch, light wood furniture and a modern kitchenette -- great for simple breakfasts. There was plenty of room for clothes and while the bathroom was small, it was clean and well-maintained. The bed was a Temperpedic -- very comfortable, with pretty good reading lights (which a surprising number of expensive hotels don't have). There isn't any AC, but it's actually not necessary. During a horrific heat spell, the room, with ceiling fan and open (screened) door and window was quite cool and comfortable for sleeping.

The beach chairs they provide are a bit basic, but more than adequate, and we had brought our own anyway. They provide good umbrellas, plenty of towels and we didn't feel the lack of any comforts. As others noted, the cleaning staff is excellent, and the rooms are kept very well.

This is a great find for the area -- reasonably priced compared to many other places far less pleasant -- and we plan to return as soon as we can.

As for being out of the way, which some others noted, a 5 to 10-minute drive gets you to East Hampton, Amagansett town or Montauk, with plenty of restaurants, bars and other nightlife. So it's the best of both -- a quiet spot, but close by action if you want it. That said, this wouldn't be a good spot without a car.

We stayed for three nights at the White Sands in late September. The room had a fridge, flat screen TV, and a two burner cooktop. The setting is beautiful - on a georgous stretch of beach on Napeague.

The room was clean and the staff was friendly. There is a nice patio area that has lounge chairs, tables and barbeques.

There was NO service. The cleaning staff were excellent
The room was just OK. The curtains were torn and the bedspread was disgusting
There are NO amenities. No airconditioning! This is just a room. The shower stall is so small you knock your elbows when you raise your arms to wash your hair.
The location is great, right on the beach, but you have to carry your own chairs and umbrella and set them up yourself.
The best is the location and that is IT. NOT worth the money. Will never stay here again!

My wife and I decided to get away for one night and head down to Long Island's east end. Had an old brochure of The White Sands and called directly. Booked a nice, small efficiency and arrived just at check in time and were in the ocean as soon as we unpacked, as it is right there, only steps away. The water was still warm enough to swim in and the beach area was great. Clean, white sand and no one but us for as far as you could see. The room was very clean, with a nice view of the ocean. Left the slider open all night long to hear the waves and watch the moon reflect off the water. The resort is a distance, not much around, but thats the way we like it, Besides, it is only a short drive into town if you want more to do. We"ll be back again for sure, especially in the off season, as the rates are quite a bit lower and the crowds are non existant. Since my wife and I have both recently retired from teaching elementary school, the quietness of the place is a great draw for us.

  • Liked — Proximity to the beach and cleanliness
  • Disliked — No separation barriers on deck between units prvided little privacy amongst guests.

Nice, clean motel on the most awesome beach with a beautiful garden. Very romantic spot with nice sunsets. With that said, you are about 2-1/2 miles away from the closest store or restaraunt. Everything shuts down at 6:00 p.m. Motel doesn't even have a vending machine which it really should have considering its location. My room didn't have a kitchenette, only a small fridge that you can only fill only so much which necessitated many trips to supermarket that was a long drive away. Cuts alot into your beach time. If you have a family and are looking for a quiet vacation then this is the place is for you. If you have a pulse and want a place where there is life after 6:00, p.m. then don't go here. It's a big pain driving in an out of town. This place in the woods. I was bored to death at night. Also, beware, in the Hamptons you have to wait on ridiculous lines for service almost everywhere you go. I have to say, the Hamptons are highly overated. For the money I spent, I could have went to the Caribbean. Not worth it.

  • Liked — directly on the beach
  • Disliked — no ammenities, isolated spot out town, dead

Spent 4 glorious days at the White Sands and cannot wait to go back. Love that it is a small place, immaculately clean, comfortable bed and a GORGEOUS beach. The perennial gardens are magnficent, too. Omar and the staff couldn't be nicer.

The location is nice and the property is okay, but the service and management ruin this place. Our room was not as clean as you would expect and we had no hot water for two full days. I called and alerted the front desk but nothing happenned. Upon check out, the front desk seemed shocked that I was dissatisfied and that I wanted some kind of compensation. They tried to find the manager but couldn't. When I asked for the manager's name so I could call back I was told that the manager didn't like her name given out as she didn't like to be associated with the resort. I was told that they would call me after talking to her. Well, it's two weeks now and no one has called.
