“Fabulous relaxing stay at an excellent hotel”
Reviewed 25 September 2012

Just come back from a fabulous week at this hotel. We booked through Virgin Holidays and landed early in the morning and straight from the beginning we were made to feel welcome. Here is the lowdown on our stay:

Check in and reception area: Check in was quick and efficient and the lady behind the desk gave us plenty of information to get us started on our stay, including a map of the resort and information on the various restaurants and facilities. The reception is very nice and quite large with several little areas including a bar, a café area serving starbucks, a business centre and shops (including a gift shops, a holiday shop, jewellers and hairdressers). The hotel has a piano player most nights of the week playing in the reception.

Rooms: Our room was on the 4th floor with a fantastic sea view - and a great view of the sun setting in the evening. You could see almost all of the resort. The room had a large double bed (really comfy!!) with lots of fluffy pillows. There was also a sofa and desk as well as a large flat screen TV with lots of international channels. The bathroom was very large with a separate bath and shower, toilet, bidet and double sinks – there was even a set of scales. There is an in-room safe in the cupboard which was very easy to use as well as an iron, ironing board, dressing gowns and slippers for guests to use. The room also had a remote controlled air conditioning unit. There was a mini bar which as you would expect was quite expensive if you wanted to make use of it. However, we took all of the items out and replaced them with our own coke and snacks to keep them cool and then put the original items back in when we left. The one good thing about the mini bar was the complimentary 1.5ltr bottles of water. There were also coffee and tea making facilities but we did not use these. The room was very quiet and there was little or no noise from any of the other rooms or corridors etc.

Pool/Beach Area – This area is so pretty, especially when all lit up at night. There are several pools to use. The one to the immediate rear of the hotel is a salt water pool and has a swim up bar. This is not very deep and can only came up to my waist at the deepest part. This pool is very large and does feed into another pool so be careful if you do not want a salt water pool. This pool is also not temperature controlled so is quite warm. The other pools are not saltwater and are temperature controlled. The pools are either 2 or 3 steps to get in or you can wade in and it was very nice just to sit in the shallow area with the cool water lapping around you as the 42 degree sun beat down on you. There was plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas and we never had a problem finding some. You are given towel cards upon arrival and you can exchange these for pool/beach towels. The beaches were clean and well kept (there was a staff member walking along the shoreline picking up any rubbish left by the guests).

Restaurant – We only ate in the main Maddrid Restaurant as we were half board. It is very busy at peak times but we only waited a couple of minutes at most for a table to become free. The service from the staff was excellent – The lady at the entrance was very nice and even remembered that my partner was using a crutch and commented when he arrived for dinner able to walk without it and the waitress we had remembered what drinks we wanted and that we wanted to pay cash for them. Drinks are quite expensive which I would say is the only let down with the food/drink. A can of Pepsi at dinner costs 18Dirhams (approx. £3.50) although we learnt that if you asked for a large in a pint glass it was still only 18Dirhams! The food was very good. They have a different theme each night and there is plenty to satisfy even the pickiest of people. Breakfast is quite vast with a huge range of options from omelettes to cereals to croissants. There are several other restaurants and bars in the hotel but we did not make use of them so cannot comment.

Shuttle to Manar Mall: The hotel provides a courtesy bus to the local mall every night at 6:20pm, returning at 8:40. There is a huge demand for the bus and everyone just rushes to the front to get on. This is obviously no fault of the hotel but it tells you that the seats on the bus are coveted. On one night there was only room for about half of the people that had turned up for the bus and so they had to put on a second one. There was usually plenty of room on the way back as people decided to get a taxi back instead of waiting for the bus. It is only 15 minutes away so I can’t imagine a taxi would be expensive. There is a large hypermarket in the mall (Carrefour) where you can get very cheap drinks and snacks for your room. As I said, we emptied the mini bar and filled it with our drinks to keep them cool.

Shuttle to Dubai: We took 2 shuttles to Dubai. The first time, we took advantage of the free Virgin Holidays bus. This picks you up at 11am and collects you again at 4pm. When you consider that Dubai is an hour and a half from the hotel, you don’t get much time. We stayed in the Dubai Mall where the bus dropped us off (1500 shops and entrance to the Burj Khalifa) and window shopped andhad some food (Nandos foe less than £6 each!). Our second trip was through the hotel itself. We paid 100Dirhams to get picked up at 9am and dropped off about 11am (it picks up at the other 2 Hiltons in the area) and picks you up again at 5:30pm – again to and from the Dubai Mall. While we were here we went up the Burj Khalifa (purchased though our Virgin Holiday Rep for 140 Dirhams each), went to the beach and saw the Burj al Arab, took the monorail up the Palm and then back to Dubai Mall in time for a quick bite and some souvenir shopping. The city is very spread out and we had to use taxi’s to make the trips between the various locations.

To summarise, we had a brilliant, relaxing holiday and the hotel was so nice and picturesque and the staff were always pleasant and helpful. It was made all the better by being able to easily get into Dubai. Beach holiday and city break rolled into one! We will be back! 5 stars!!!!

Room Tip: We upgraded to a deluxe sea view room - well worth the money for the fantastic view.

Just arrived home after spending 2 weeks here. Room was excellent, sea view, large verandah..
Egyptian cotton bedding changed whenever you wanted by leaving the relevant card on the pillow.
Disagree with the comment re the design of the bathroom, as a 5'10 female, I had no problems with the toilet roll holder!..breakfasts are superb, with every food you could want....loved the freshly prepared orange, mint and ginger juice..yummy. Never experienced any problem getting pool towels or loungers, as there are numerous around all the pools. Staff are extremely friendly. .
Food in the The Maarid Restaurant was good. Every night was a different theme and if you can't find anything to eat there you must be extremely fussy !...we tried the Brazialian Restaurant one night which was a disaster, didn't get half the food we should have and eventually spoke to the manager, who asked us to return another night. We agreed to return on the Thursday night but when we went to reception on the Thursday to confirm he had booked us in, we found the restaurant had no record of him allegedly reserving us a table, terrible service..
The little shops in the hotel are good value and don't overprice....I had to buy batteries and pain killers and they were just what we would have paid at home, well done there...
We travelled with Virgin and their temp Rep, Nidal was superb....not pushy at all but knowledge of the area brilliant...Virgin run a courtesy bus to Dubai a couple of times a week...great service
The hotel also run a nightly courtesy bus into 2 of the RAK malls...also a great service
Think there could be free wifi in the hotel reception area though..
I have only one Complaint.....and it's dress code....wear shorts, vests and baseball caps for breakfast but NOT for dinner...some of the clothes worn at dinner were outrageous...one guy wore a Ukrainian football top and shorts and flip flops for breakfast and dinner EVERY DAY AND NIGHT, totally unacceptable
We did speak to one of the restaurant managers about it and he stated there was a language problem, sorry, draw a diagram if need be, it's not rocket science !!...
All in all a great holiday, great place with great staff, just some guests with no dress sense...

Room Tip: High floor for view of mountains, beach and pool

Dear Flutterbyer,

Thank you for sharing this very kind and thorough review about your recent experience at Hilton Ras Al Khaimah Resort & Spa with the TripAdvisor community.

Your feedback is even more highly appreciated as you are a Senior TripAdvisor reviewer and the quality of your review will be beneficial for all other users to read it as you outline very useful and relevant information in regards to our resort.

As we read, you virtually enjoyed each and every amenity we offer. In order to provide this atmosphere it is most important to have your constructive feedback which is very valuable for us to know. As we strive to exceed the expectations of our guests our respective departments will review your suggestions so we can assess these potential improvements.

I was sorry to read your comments about the lack of respect of the dress code in our all day dining restaurant and that our team and management were not able to hanlde the issue. As a mark of respect for all our loyal guests with different nationalities, the evening dress code for the inside restaurants is smart casual, men are asked to wear long pants and closed shoes as a minimum. Without trying to find an excuse for my team, I know by experience that it can be sometime challenging with some guests but I do promise that we will reinforce the control at the entrance of the restaurant.

I have noted your comments concerning the service level in our Southern American restaurant whereas we traditionally get a lot of praise for it. Please do accept my sincere apologies for the disappointments caused. I would like to assure you that I have relayed this to our F&B Manager who will follow up with his team to ensure that the appropriate corrective actions are immediately taken to enhance our quality of work.

Thanks again for your review and hope to welcoming you back for another stay in the Northern of the Emirates.

Kindest regards.

The best thing to wake up to was the beautiful sea view with the sun rising over the hills and the villas. Quiet coffee on the balcony enjoying the sound of the waves and the birdsong in the quiet of the early hours.

The main all day restaurant was average and menus could do with an upgrade as it was below par for a 5 star hotel in a town with very limited dining options outside of the hotels. Desserts looked and tasted like they came out of a factory instead of a 5 star hotel kitchen, too little variety and looking stale and tired.

Bathrooms were awkward and layout ill conceived as the toilet roll holder was positioned were a normal sized adult's leg should go when using the toilet. There was no toilet hose and the bidet was equally ill placed ensuring that it could not be used successfully without splashing all over the floor.

Dera Bint M,

Many thanks for your comments further to your stay at Hilton RAs Al Khaimah Resort & Spa.

I am of course delighted to learn that you have enjoyed the hotel and particularly the beautiful sea view from your room. I have noted and shared your comment about our all day dining restaurant and its menu with our kitchen team. I would like to inform as well the tripadvisor community that our resort offers 4 other speciality restaurants, Italian, Sea food, Asian and South American with different a la carte menu.

I have passed on your comments about the bathroom to the departments involved, especially the design of our guest bedrooms and we will take this feedback in to account in future refurbishments.

We all look forward to welcoming you back to the resort for another beautiful sun rise.

Kind regards.

This was our second visit to this hotel. We travelled again with Virgin Holidays. Thanks Nidal you were very helpful! The hotel is gorgeous and the staff are so friendly. Every member of staff from the management to the gardeners always said hello and asked if we were enjoying ourselves. The Maarid restaurant which we used all the time on our all inclusive, always had a great selection of wonderful food. Special thanks to Arvind, Ashish, Rony and Jessie who were so good to us. We will soon be planning another trip to this hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 3121 which has a garden view. It was very close to the restaurant and very handy f...

My husband and I wanted a 5-star beach holiday and this was definitely it! RAK is a small town about an hour drive from Dubai but this resort was incredible! From the check-in to the check-out it was an amazing experience! We were upgraded to a Queen Beach Villa (with Hilton Honors card) so we did not stay in the main hotel. We arrived early to the hotel and the room was not ready so we were given a complimentary breakfast and what a breakfast it was.....everything you can think of to eat and more overlooking the pool and the ocean. The room was spacious with two double beds, bathroom with separate shower, dressing area, and outside a porch that walks out onto the beach. The villas all had direct access to the beach (literally across your patch of lawn onto the sand) and swimming pools (heated and not). The hotel has a massive salt water pool but the sun loungers around the pool get occupied very early so we preferred our location. The hotel has a gym, spa and kids activities as well as water sports (very pricey though). We were happy to laze in the sun, swim in the ocean and cool off in the pool! The beaches are clean and soft white sand but incredibly warm. The staff are excellent and service is always friendly and prompt. The villa guests are shuttled to the reception area very efficiently in golf carts as and when you request. The only issues we had with this hotel was the following: no free wifi and the wifi prices are ridiculous; the restaurants at the hotel although a few are also quite expensive and not good value for money (most guests take the free shuttle to the mall to eat there); room service has a surcharge over and above the amount on the menu this was just crazy! Despite this we had an excellent stay and will most definitely advise people to stay at this resort.

Room Tip: If you want your space go for a villa rather than the main hotel.
