Played here a couple of times in the last few months (once in Nov '13 and once in Jan '14). Whilst the condition of the course, quality of buggies, and 'moderness' of clubhouse facilities is not in the same category as most courses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi it is still very good when you consider what you are paying. The cost of playing golf in the Emirates is quite high in comparison to other places in the world but a round at Tower Links is very reasonable relative to other UAE courses.
The course itself is challenging, a tough layout with many natural features and a much less manufactured feeling that some other courses, making use of the natural landscape around it. This made a refreshing change for some of the people I played with, whose golf is normally at the courses in Dubai.
Overall course condition - Very good, but patchy in places. Not as pretty or manicured around the edges as it could be but in general it was very playable with fairways and tees being the best condition of all elements of the course. Greens were better in Jan than Nov after they finished relaying some big areas on them and they had recovered surprisingly quickly in the 2 months between visits. A lot slower that some other courses but true and smooth. Looks like they need another couple of months before a fair review can be done on them. Will be keen to check back and see what people have put.
Facilities - Practice ground is good but balls are very old and some of them are not even worth hitting they are in such bad condition. On the last visit they had run out of buggies which was frustrating as we had to be taken by large buggy to and from the practice ground before our buggies were ready. They were only ready just before we were due to tee off meaning we did not have time to go for a practice putt first (putting green is near the tee not the practice ground). Buggies in general appear quite old and tired and the GPS system stopped working on one of them but the staff quickly brought another out once we reported it.
Clubhouse - Has everything you need and expect albeit in a less grand and luxurious scale than some courses. But again, given what you are paying it is more than adequate. Changing rooms look like they could do with some modernisation and having to walk through the toilets to get there seems a strange design feature. Bar food and value for money was excellent though and the terrace is a nice setting overlooking the course.
Staff were always friendly, helpful and quick to respond.
Summary here is don't be unfair and compare it to some courses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. You'll be pleasantly surprised by how much you enjoy playing this course and very satisfied with the price it cost you to play in comparison. Well worth the drive from Dubai and would recommend it as a place to play. Our whole group said they would go back anyway!
