La Casa de los Limoneros
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 26 May 2012

La Casa de los Limoneros is a great place to stay, the ideal location ... uruguayan country side ("campo"), by the side of the Rio de la Plata, but not ON the Rio de la Plata (it can get too windy), beautiful swimming pool surrounded by ... yes, lemmons.
It is not a must, but i strongly suggest you have a car with you. Exiting the port of Colonia, serious rental companies, will rent you a car for very reasonable prices. I think two blocks up, there is a local Punta Cana rental, where I always got a wonderful car (Golf, Polo) for very reasonable prices, on daily basis, or weekly basis.
Why do I suggest a car? In order to travel to the City of Colonia, visit the Barrio Historico, eat in some wonderful restaurants, and go back to the country side, have breakfast in the morning in the peaceful surrounding.
Now, La Casa de los Limoneros is close to Route # 21 (very good road); if you go north 60 KM, you'll hit Carmelo, a kind of very laid back uruguayan town where you can eat in the meat restaurant in the plaza.
If you go east 5-10 KM, you'll get to Colonia, and from there you can either enjoy the city or travel even more east, via Route # 1, the route to Montevideo. You can turn right in Santa Ana, and eat in the stone built Hotel, you can stop by in Colonia Valdense and drive towards the river. If you get hungry, the restaurant close to the filling station, is excellent, and the prices are very more than reasonable.
Go back to the La casa de los Limoneros ... that should be your base. You can ask Mario or Sergio for a special meal, walking through the gardens is fantastic.
One important piece of information: it is not possible to check this in advance, but in the high summer season, Dec-Jan-Feb, could be hot, but the worse, mosquitos could be a very unpleasant company; they can appear when the sun sets, and make your life miserable.

We ended up at Los Limoneros unexpectedly because of a problem with our reservation at another posada in Colonia, and it turned out to be a lucky mistake for us. Sergio and Mario were extraordinarily gracious hosts, and the setting was beautiful. I loved the sounds and smells of the water garden out back. The nighttime wildlife sounds were soothing, especially after the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires. The food was also very good. We particularly enjoyed the Saturday night asada. I would definitely recommend Casa de los Limoneros!

During a visit to Buenos Aires, we had considered a visit to Uruguay, but were not sure where to look in Colonia de Sacramento. We were saved when Madi Lang of BA Concierge told us about a delicious bungalow, a ten minute ride outside of Colonia. We decided to visit for three days and what a treat!
We were met at the Ferry Terminal by Mario – one of the owners and builders of the inn – who gave us a tour of Colonia and a sense of history of the area.
He had not prepared us, however, for the beauty and tranquility of La Casa de Limoneros as it is nestled in a lemon grove with thousands of fruit-laden trees. Mario and his partner Sergio have built a very traditional hacienda with all of the creature comforts that one could want – including a beautiful swimming pool – while incorporating fascinating items from Uruguayan history in the construction of the building.
As hosts, they lead an excellent Team and everyone made us feel most welcome.
While we were there, we elected to have two dinners ‘en casa’ and were very pleased with the culinary creations that Mario created in the kitchen – not the least of which were his wonderful cold soups! All very enjoyable with some Uruguayan wines that he selected for us.
Overall, a wonderful three days with some interesting people in a beautiful location - we hope to return someday!

We had a great stay at Limoneros. The posada is a very cool and charming building that is only 10 yrs old but feels like it has been there 100 yrs. Mario and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The family style meals were delicious and a lot of fun. It is a lovely oasis from which to explore Colonia and Carmelo.

I'll start with the hospitality of the owners and staff. Both owners were extremely welcoming and charming. Both have their own separate businesses so they aren't always around, but easily accessible if needed. The house staff is VERY friendly and always willing to please the guests. One of the owners speaks fluent English. The place is about 10km from Colonia so a car is a must. However, I saw the owners shuttling guests back and forth to the town and/or nearby beaches. The property has seven or eight rooms, two on the second floor. One of the rooms is occupied by the owners, the other is for guests. I highly recommend it for the quaint balcony overlooking the premises, lakes, lemon orchards, and eventually the river. The rooms are very spacious and charmingly decorated (as is the entire house). The air conditioning could be better. The pool is very large and sparkling clean. The breakfast included in the price is plentiful, fruit, buns, marmalades, cold cuts, yogurts, juice, etc. Nearby river beaches offer long stretches of sand with nobody in sight. Great for skinny-dipping. My only two minor objections is that the website says they accept credit cards (which they don't) and there isn't a single TV set on the premises. That's OK, but it should be mentioned somewhere. Wi-Fi is accessible and free (we watched several movies on Netflix). Highly recommendable and will definitely return.

Room Tip: The premises has two second-floor rooms, one is occupied by the owners, the other is for guests. I...

La Casa de los Limoneros really exceeded our expectations. The reallity is a million times better than what you see in the pictures. The service was excellent, and the home made breakfast in the beautiful green house was amazing. It felt like being on an estate. Try the Parillada!!!! When we went there, the owner, Sergio, cooked the bbq, and it was fantastic! We will definately go back!

We loved staying in this gorgeous house in the Uruguayan countryside. The grounds are stunning and lying by the pool overlooking the lemon groves is incredibly relaxing. At night, the sound of thousands of frogs croaking by the ponds lends the place a magical atmosphere. The staff of Javier, Carolina and Raquel are very friendly and welcoming and although there is no restaurant at night you can have an asado, which is far better food than anything you can get in very pricy Colonia 10 kms away. We had the best morcilla we have ever tasted – scrummy. The staff always tell you in advance how much things cost - so there are no surprises later on. The house is decorated in a rustic style and you feel you are staying in a good friend’s home. Perhaps the bed-linen could be a bit more luxurious for the price of the room. However, having said that, we look forward to our next visit. English is not spoken but why should it be - we're in Uruguay after all!
