The location is quite nice on a quiet side street, the menu is also promising because after 6 weeks in Argentina, Chili and Uruguay you're really looking forward to something else than (delicious) steaks. This restaurant is however a big disappointment.

Although a friendly waiter, the service wasn't al that. We had to wait quite long before the waiter came to our table to bring the menu and take our order. Just before us arrived a family of 5 and there was already a family of 4 waiting for their food. But that can't be an excuse. Than we had to wait for 50 minutes before our burritos were served, almost cold (the cheese wasn't even melted) and really small and not good. The cook/citchen can't cope with just 11 guests? The ordered guacamole was missing, after asking the waiter came out with a hard avocado. What's a mexican restaurant without guacamole.

The price of 160 uruguay pesos a piece is quite high for what you get, there was also an additioal 35 pesos a person table fee which make it not an attractive place for a small lunch.

After eating lunch, I paid for our meal with an Argentine 100 Pesos bill (worth about $25 USD) that I had withdrawn that morning from a bank ATM. The waiter, "Sebastian", brought back the bill, saying it was counterfeit. My wife was confident that they had taken our legitimate 100 pesos and swtiched it with the counterfeit, but I felt that we had no proof at the time, so we used other money to settle our account. Later at the ferry terminal waiting to return to Buenos Aires, we were approached by a couple who had eaten at Tasca del Sur and had witnessed our exchange with Sebastian about the counterfeit bill. They did not think much of it until they recieved a counterfeit Uruguayan 50 Pesos note in their change from Tasca del Sur, and witnessed the staff pulling the same "fake bill" routine with yet another customer. We learned that it is absolutely imperative that you put a personal mark on any large bill so you can protect yourself from a "counterfeit" switch. We also now know that if you receive bills from a bank ATM, you can be assured that they are real!

It was a hot day in March in Colonia. We turned up a shaded side street from the water and saw a few tables and chairs, beckoning us to sit and cool down. The Tasca del Sur restaurant, on Paseo de Las Flores turned out to be not only cool and shady, but to deliver ice cold beer and a tortilla to die for. We ordered just one tortilla, as the waiter showed us the size with his hands. Beer came first, and then, a freshly-made tortilla, with patatas and morrons (green and red bell peppers) appeared. It was perfectly made, beautiful to look at, and even better to eat. So, of course, we ordered another beer. The tortilla was, gasp, a little over $4. A beer: $1.60. (I also ordered a glass of wine to begin with, but it was on the edge of turning into vinegar. Being flexible, alcoholically speaking, I switched to beer.)
Just up the street and around the corner were a number of restaurants, also with outdoor tables - but the square was busy with people and some traffic. Our oasis was quiet, shady and rather like having your own privately catered party, as the other couple there when we arrived soon left.
A simple restaurant, but wonderful!
