“Good place to stay, central, but expensive”
Reviewed 15 July 2011

I stayed in The Colonial for 4 days during the off-season and had a dorm to myself. It was cosy comfortable and clean. I thought that it was expensive and the spartan breakfast was a disgrace. Never in my travels have I been given such an abomination under the guise of "breakfast". Saying that there is free internet, bicycles and lots of information.

They are located right on the main street, just a few blocks from everything. A two minute walk will have you in the heart of old town. Once past reception you will find yourself in a beautiful courtyard surrounded by the doorways to their charming rooms. The staff were all very helpful (and bilingual). The inexpensive breakfast was personally delivered. Don't pass up the free bike rental. Thanks, Hostel Colonial.

From the minute we walked in the door I knew this hostel was going to be good. The receptionists were very friendly and accommodating and continued to be so throughout our stay. The hostel is unlike any other, with lots of plants and flowers and an open-air central terrace on the first floor, and rooms circling around and looking down on it from above. The kitchen and bathrooms were always clean, and breakfast was brought to us complete with café quality coffee and steamed milk. They have free bike rental which made for a great day touring the town, and the perfect location on the main street made for a perfect night walk. They also have horse tours which looked fun, but we didn't have time to go. Next time I come through Uruguay, I am definitely passing through Colonia and staying with them again. Highly recommended.

Hostel Colonial has a nice courtyard and common room area, where guests can relax watching television, reading or chatting. There are also a few computers provided or you can connect to the reasonably fast (depending on how many people are using it) wifi connection using your own laptops.

The wooden shuttered rooms are lovely: bright, clean and airy as is the bed linen and towels. There are not really enough bathrooms for the amount of people the establishment can accommodate and in the height of season, hot water could be a problem as they use small gas water heaters. They do apologise for this via signage though and state that this will improve in the future. Otherwise the toilet amenities are kept clean and well stocked with toilet paper and soap.

The only real downside was the kitchen: on first glance it looks well equipped, but when you begin to cook, you'll find the lack of pots and decent sized pans a real problem. Additionally, in the morning they remove all cups and plates for serving their breakfast, which you of course have to pay for. It is therefore impossible to make your own coffee and toast unless you are carry these items with you. Luckily, we do and it proved no problem. Staff are otherwise very helpful.

It was my first night in Uruguay and I was shocked at the 600 pesos for a double room with share bathroom (nearly 24 euros), but soon discovered that this is a fairly normal price for this type of accommodation.

Very easy to find from the bus station in colonia, as there are signs everywhere. The whole town was very quiet when we came here. The hostel was also quiet. Nice big place, rooms are a good size. However there are NO lockers, and security was very lax - people just walk in and out. They have very small boxes to keep small valuables in at reception. Location was good, right on the main street. Colonia itself is tiny, so you wouldnt really stay for more then 1 full day/night. Nice kitchen, excellent courtyard area.
