Hostel Colonial
Reviewed 19 June 2012

The hostel is centrally located, between the historic downtown and both the bus and ferry stations. I found the location very convenient.
I visited this hostel in the off season, so there were not too many guests. This is a fairly large hostel. My four bed dorm was spacious with one bunk-bed, two single beds, a night stand, one table with chairs, a ceiling fan and a window. It had wood floor and white painted masonry walls. It was clean and well kept. The linen and towel were in good condition, white and clean. The bed was comfortable. Pillows were a bit hard but OK. There were plenty of blankets to keep you warm. The two shared bathrooms, I visited, were fully functional with hot water from a water heater. They were also clean and well maintained. There was a large and pleasant courtyard with plenty of tables and some nice foliage. The common room had a TV, plenty of seating and a nice fire place. I didn’t get to use the kitchen but for the size of the hostel it looked a bit small. The entire hostel was clean and tidy. Both Wi-Fi and breakfast were included in the room rate. Wi-Fi was good and even reached my room. Breakfast was just the average typical hostel breakfast but it was not bad.
The staff was excellent. They were very hospitable and helpful. Some spoke English. What I didn’t like were the very small lockers (probably the smallest I have seen). Even a small notebook wouldn’t fit in them.
Overall this was a good hostel for me and I would recommend it.

I stayed in this Hostel just before Christmas for six days and had a really nice stay. Nice lounge area with large TV and fully equiped kitchen, and lovely courtyard area with tables and chairs in and out of the sun. The owner and his family were very friendly, and the rooms and bathrooms were all kept clean. A good place to meet likeminded travellers. Stuart, Brighton, England.

Rather large but quiet hostel in central Colonia, on the main street. 24/7 reception with very helpful staff, of which several also speak English. There are several quite spacious twin, quadruple and dorm rooms, with real walls and a good feeling of privacy. The beds are not new but in good condition, bedlinen are fresh, and overall the hostel is tidy with clean
bathrooms where everything works, and with hot water. There is one large patio for socialising, and a smaller inner one for laundrying and drying. A large room on the backside of the patio holds a big TV, 2 Internet computers (which could be renewed) and eating tables.

Aside from the worn-out computers, this hostel´s only goat is the kitchen. Despite two big and clean fridges and dito gas stoves, the selection of pots and pans is haphazard and incomplete, which really limits kitchen usabiliy. The breakfast is fresh white bread, butter, jam, and hot coffee/cocoa/tea. For the price, 700 UR (twin room, Dec 2011) and 15% HI discount, the place is great for longer stays, especially if you don´t fancy cooking.

Room Tip: Rooms 11-13 are the best, nr 4 is noisy

Stayed in a private room, was pretty cold but clean and comfortable. They have bikes that you can hire which is a nice way to see the town. And you are only a short walk from the historic centre of this beautiful Uruguayan city.

We were here for 2 days in August, dead of winter. 4 bathrooms seemed plenty, but it is off season. Husband got a full hot water shower, I used a different bathroom (and *pressumably* a different hot water tank) and only got 1 minute of hot water. US$19 per person for a double was expensive but that seems to be the case in Colonia. The rooms are big but could definitely use some heating. The blankets provided do more than enough to keep you warm but without heating the room is not somewhere to hang out. Pillows were miserable foam rectangles, but reception provided 4! supplementary pillows when asked.
Didn't make use of kitchen/lounge area too much but it was nice to have computers, a tv and a fireplace.
Overall, would recommend.

I stayed in The Colonial for 4 days during the off-season and had a dorm to myself. It was cosy comfortable and clean. I thought that it was expensive and the spartan breakfast was a disgrace. Never in my travels have I been given such an abomination under the guise of "breakfast". Saying that there is free internet, bicycles and lots of information.

They are located right on the main street, just a few blocks from everything. A two minute walk will have you in the heart of old town. Once past reception you will find yourself in a beautiful courtyard surrounded by the doorways to their charming rooms. The staff were all very helpful (and bilingual). The inexpensive breakfast was personally delivered. Don't pass up the free bike rental. Thanks, Hostel Colonial.
