“Basic but Brilliant”
Reviewed 14 March 2013

We found this a real pleasant surprise.

Our room was very basic but it was big and light with a double glass doors with shutters opening onto the balcony of the courtyard - it was very romantic.

Shared bathroom was as expected - clean but over-used.

The only bad thing to say was that one night a lot of people decided to sit outside in the courtyard till about 4am. After repeatedly asking them to be quiet, I had to ask the girl at the desk to tell them to shut up (which they then did). As there is a sign in every room saying to be quiet from midnight, it was a bit frustrating that the girl on night shift was sitting on the computer with headphones on, not really making sure this was being taken note of. It was bad luck and maybe we just should have been a bit more forceful - but it is just a warning.

A nice place to stay. Room was clean and the receptionist helpful. We hired bikes from the hostel and cycled around the town. I'd suggest going in summer as winter was very quiet in the town. Breakfast was good, get there early to ensure that you get a full choice.

The best Hostel experience we made in Uruguay. The room was nice and clean and the first room where we found a big mattress instead of 2 small. Its also a old historical building with its own charm (Yoko loved the hardwood floors and the vaulted ceilings and of course the patio). The towels were given for free (In Punta del Este B & B Hostel they would charge 2 dollars for each towel) and bikes were also available for free. Wifi also available....breakfast was a bit basic, but you find this in every hostel.

After check out we could store our backpacks in a locked room for free. A hostel we recommend definitely.

Room Tip: We liked the bed size of the double rooms, in the dorms the beds are very small.

The rate was about a third cheaper than Sacramento. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hostel is on the main street and there are a few signs giving directions to the place around town. We were allocated a triple room on the first floor. It's a basic room but the room and linens were clean. The bed was also comfortable. The three shared bathrooms on this floor were also clean, fairly large and one was always available when needed. Towels and soap were included (these thing weren't provided at Sacramento). The room on the first floor was up another short flight of stairs which gave some added privacy whilst leaving the door open. There was a nice cross breeze with the Juliette balcony. Breakfast was basic with cereal and hot drinks.

Basic place to stay while in Colonia, main thing its close to all the old township of Colonia. You are not here to see the hostal , you are here to take a walk back through time . Being in Colonia you feel like its the 1940 , even some of the cars look like they are from the 1920

Good location, nice and helpful staff, nice and clean dorm. Breakfast is simple but tasty, towels and soap are included. Bathrooms could be better and more, but are ok. Nice old building with patio. Better than other hostels in Colonia that I saw.

I really hate giving bad reviews, but strongly feel the need to advise other people not to stay here. Colonia does not have many good hostels (I had to search around after leaving this one), but any of them must be better than this (I ended up in Hostel Sur, which was fine - nice staff). The staff in Hostel Colonial are rude and uninterested in their job. My room (#8) had one plug socket for seven people. There were no lockers so your choice was to leave your stuff unattended in the room or hand it in to the surly front desk staff, but no opportunity to charge phones, computers etc. unless you were there in the room and happened to get access to the one plug. Bathrooms were cold and showers were weak. I found myself having to wait twice to use shower/toilet as there were not enough compared with number of people staying here (this had not happened anywhere else on my 6 week trip around South America). The room had no heating or cooling options, only shutters covering a gap where a window pane should be, but was just a hole in the wall. I was so hot during the night that I opened the shutters a tiny bit - waking everyone up as the wood was so old it creaked and was jammed - but then it quickly became freezing.

And these are just the minor problems I could have coped with. I got back at 3am only to discover my room was locked from the inside. The staff had no spare keys to open the door, so to get in I had to wake up my room mates - horrible! The final straw was rolling over during the night and the bed tipping over, depositing me and the mattress on the floor and waking everyone in the room up (again). I was on the only single bed in the room, rather than a bunk, just in case you were wondering.

It was one of the worst night's sleep ever and this was not helped by unfriendly, uninterested staff. I couldn't comment on breakfast as I just packed my stuff and left, but there are signs everywhere saying that if you are even one minute late for breakfast (ending at 10am), you will not be allowed to have it and don't even bother asking. I would say this is customer service at its worst, but that would indicate that there was a level of customer service at all. Oh wait. On the up side you get a towel, which most hostels in Uruguay do not provide, and the bed is made when you get there.
