Colonia is the reason you should never travel from Buenos Aires direct to Montevideo . Go there before development and Americans take over . Uruguay my world fave !

Colonia Del Sacramento is Uruguay's oldest town (1745) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We saw Iglesia Matriz which is Uruguay's oldest church and San Francisco Convent Ruins. There were a number of antique cars on the streets. It was an interesting excursion but not a nice as the other excursions we did

The Casco Viejo of Colonia is the reason you travel from Buenos Aires to visit. As others have written, the old city has lots of characteristic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Very pleasant to walk the streets and absorb the atmosphere of the place. Can be seen in one day visit as the area itself is quite small in size. Fast ferry only takes one hour from Buenos Aires and arrives at 9:30 am.

Spent a Sunday walking around the old part of the city. Very interesting seeing the old houses, climbing up the lighthouse and enjoying the history of the city. It’s about a 90 minute drive from Montevideo. Much of the streets in the city have the original stone streets and can be slippery when wet.

The World Heritage listed heart of Colonia del Sacramento makes an excellent day trip from Buenos Aires. I went with Buquebus and it only takes one hour on their fast catamaran. Make sure you give yourself enough time once you get over to the Uruguay side. Uruguay is one hour ahead of Argentina and suddenly I had half the time to explore than I initially thought. The historic centre is a wonderfully tranquil headland, surrounded by water on three sides. It is just five minutes walk along Av Gran Flores.
