The town of Colonia de Sacramento is located in Uruguay, across the Plata-delta from Buenos Aires. The boat trip takes about one hour.
In Colonia the main attraction is the old barrio which has an interesting history, having been founded by the Portuguese but eventually conquered by Spain.
The old town is charming and easy and safe to walk around in. There are some decnt resturants, wine shops, and museums and gift shops. However the museums only accept Uruguayan currency, whereas everyone else will take Argentinian ur US currency.
The walk up the lighthouse ("Faro") is worth it for the view, but because the circular stairs are very steep and narrow it is not recommended if you are overweight or get out of breath easily.

Long, spiral steps, which will tire you. The view is amazing though, worth the climb. PS: it's windy up there, so if it's cold, a scarf is recommended.

Wonderful view from the top, but the stairs to there are too narrow. At the top, wind is very strong. On the other hand, if you visit in a clear day it is possible to see some shadows of Buenos Aires buildings. Of course there is also a wonderful view of La Plata River. I reccomend it.

As far as views go, this isn't the most spectacular. As far as design goes, this isn't the prettiest lighthouse you will see. However, given the cheap admission and the ability to get a top-down sense of the historic district of Colonia, this lighthouse is worth a visit.

As other reviewers have mentioned, Colonia is a short express ferry ride from Buenos Aires (about an hour) and if you have a day to spend, it is absolutely worth it.

I do recommend visiting on a weekday if you can to avoid the weekend crowds coming from the big cities.

I've written about this some more at the Gentleman Backpacker if you have the time to read a longer review.

It's worth climbing the steps of the lighthouse - great 360degree views and photo opportunities. Only $20 peso - so good value too!
